In the UK I remember these being sold as a 181, that is One - Eight - One which arose from the vehicle's VW model number. I can't recall the name Trekker being used in the UK officially. They came in bright colors like brilliant orange, I can't remember whether apple green was ever a stock color but it's an excellent choice. This car, like all the air cooled range, looks so much better in stock form. The color seen at the start of the programme, hearing aid blue, was awful and so many VW's have been sent to the scrap yard lowered, best place for them.
Funny the names for this car. In Germany it is called the Kübelwagen, the bucket car or simply "the bucket".
Correctly the bucket is the original WW2 version, but it looked so familiar so it inherited the name.
Reminisent of the WWII German staff car which in the states was the Volkswagen Thing.

it's called the trekker because it was sold in the UK as the Trekker, and... it was sold in Germany as the kourierwagen, and it was sold in indonesia as the Safari. Heres a tip, the US is not the centre of the universe.
It looks like an invalid carriage to me. The Dodge would have been much better.
