Always nice to see when the umps dont let their own ego affect the games outcome. On purpose or not, a ball at the head after a warning has to be followed by an ejection. Can't embolden players or managers to headhunt, it's one of the most dangerous parts of playing baseball and I'm honestly surprised the league is still so lenient on intentionally hitting batters. That kind of stuff warrants suspensions. The only negative I can see coming from this is batters crowding the plate more, but 1) why not just move the batters' boxes back then, or 2) why not let the batters have *something* in a game currently totally dominated by pitching?

    • @maniacmatt1782
      @maniacmatt1782 Před 2 lety

      Absolutely. Ejections had to be made. But, as a Phillies fan, this was just Neris being wild. We were used to that over the past few years.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin Před 2 lety +11

      @@maniacmatt1782 nobody cares if the pitcher is wild when it comes to concussions and throws near the head. If your pitcher is too wild that he can't keep the ball away from someone's head, then he shouldn't be pitching at all. He needs to practice and learn some control before he steps out on the mound again.

    • @maniacmatt1782
      @maniacmatt1782 Před 2 lety +6

      @@Dhalin I agreed with the ejection for that reason. I also believer there was no intent on behalf of Neris. He is genuinely reacting as soon as he lets the pitch go. He feels it get away. He's starting to wince himself before the ball even gets to Suarez. This is NOT the body language of a guy who just tried to blast someone in the head. He clearly didn't want to throw at is head. But getting him out of the game is the right call if he can't control his pitches.

    • @kman9884
      @kman9884 Před 2 lety +4

      I’ll repeat it ad nauseum: intentionally pitching at and hitting batters is grounds for a criminal and civil lawsuit.
      It’s not within the confines of the sport. There are no rules that permit the deliberate act of throwing a pitch at a batter, with the intent to hit them. It’s no different than the batter walking up to the pitcher and punching him in the face, or striking him with the bat. Players themselves need to take it seriously and cost the league, and other players, money. Otherwise, MLB will never change.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin Před 2 lety +2

      @@kman9884 The problem is, though, is how you define intentional vs accident? There are _obvious_ situations where it's intentional, sure, but sometimes the line can be blurry. Pitchers can act. A pitcher can throw and then immediately do the "oh crap! sorry!" bit right afterwards and look genuine. Or, someone can have a legitimate accident in a situation that you'd assume was intentional. Should a pitcher get fined and/or a lawsuit if he merely has an accident?
      I think what really needs to happen, is we need to hold classes and seminars with pitchers to get rid of this "unwritten rule" BS, and get rid of the culture where pitchers get their fee-fees hurt anytime a batter looks at a homerun, or whatever other stupid junk goes on that makes pitchers intentionally plunk batters.
