I tried this as a little kid in 3rd grade...sooooo salty!
Vegemite is made from creating yeast. They make the yeast...& Scrape off the barrels...the scraped parts...that is what Vegemite is....a by- product of making yeast.
The "correct" way of eating it is on toast....with butter.... & A VERY....thin...layer of Vegemite.
...I'm thinking of trying it again sometime....I could not eat it the last time, either!
If you taste Vegemite...lol...it is known ...worldwide...for it's intense, salty flavour. You're a fan of it....or you are not.
Most ppl I know do NOT like it....but I am also told that Australians do not like peanut butter....so....
I think they can enjoy their Vegemite....lol....& I will enjoy my peanut butter! 😊

I'm from the US, but I like Vegemite and Marmite, but the only reason I do is because a native showed me how it's done: crispy toast, lots of melted butter and a tiny amount of vegemite spread evenly. If you get the right amount, it's this buttery, savory delicious snack. Get it wrong, and it's like being punched in the face by an angry yeast monster.

Vegemite is one of those things where you either love it or hate it with a passion! To eat it on toast, don't slap it on thickly. Apply it thinly, with plenty of butter or margarine. The Fray Bentos brand still exists (from the UK) but there is no longer the Spread. Similar products would include Bovril and Marmite. They are all dark brown/black, very concentrated and very salty. A lot of people who say they don't like it, have spread it on thickly and yes, it would taste awful like that. First time you try, spread it on sparingly. Then you can always add a bit more the next time. If you are looking for something salty it is great. Have a lovely day! Geniet jou dag!

Vegemite is an acquired taste... Think the UK equivalent is Marmite?
It used to be a staple here in America as well until the late '70s or '80s.
The reason the British eat it is because after world war I they needed to make sure the citizens were getting enough B vitamins... And this is a paste made from yeast... So that they were able to get the nutrition they needed
