- I have not seen Naruto for a decade, but I remember it. A lot of it.
I may not remember how to pronounce any of it, but, as with anyone from the 2000's, I remember the effect it had. The long shadow it cast across culture and the internet. A shadow that formed into a circle. A circle that may be unmentionable. For it exists in a dark place. Interlinked with a hundred forgotten posts, forums, and subcultures. An underbelly informed by the teachings of "Jashin".
Jashin. A bizarre god supposedly worshiped by the character Hidan within Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. But, as with everything on the internet, this fictional deity and factual beliefs began to blur. Users began to claim Masashi Kishimoto had based this fake deity upon a forgotten one of fact. An ancient Japanese religion of violence that had been long extinct. They sought to revive it in new forms.
So what emerged from the belief that Hidan's god was a true god?

Are you sure it was a cult and not just what Kishimoto turned Naruto into in the Naruto timeskip?

Hidan was always a rather bizarre Naruto villain, in the fact that he always felt out-of-place not just in the Akatsuki, but with the rest of the Naruto lore. If you look at the other Akatsuki members, all of them had some tie to the overall Naruto mythos (Itachi and Obito being part of the Uchiha Clan, Kisame being one of the Seven Swordsman of the Mist Village, Sasori being a puppetmaster like Kankuro, Pain having the powers of both Madara and the Sage of Six Paths, etc.), but Hidan was always the odd one out in the fact that the village he comes from, his religious beliefs, his personality and attire come off as if they just... don't belong with the rest of the series. This is especially true since once Hidan is defeated, he and the Jashinist faith are never mentioned again other than Kakuzu bringing him up during the Ninja War.
As for Jashinism's belief system, I am not as familiar with Shinto as I am with Christianity, Islam or even Buddhism, but from what I can tell, virtually none of Jashinism's (known) practices bear resemblance to Shinto practices, and I DEFINITELY know that Shinto does not practice human sacrifice. Interestingly, "Jashin" sound very close to "Joshua", a name derived from "Yeshua", the Aramaic name of Jesus Christ, to which Jashinism has more similarities to the Abrahamic religions than Eastern religions, and a large portion of "New Age" cults that currently exist are very loose interpretations of Christianity, but this is likely a coincidence.
I checked the Naruto Wiki after watching this video, it says nothing about Jashinism's origins, only that it's symbol resembles a Pentagram, which it's most likely possible that Jashinism was partly inspired by Satanism, let alone the Thugee of India.
I think that's why Hidan is interesting but also probably the most interesting/memorable Naruto villain (beside Anime only filler characters). As far as I can recall, he's the only one to bring up religion in a "Western Sense" in the series. From what I recall, there are a few Japanese Shinto practices in Naruto but those are more custom then exact religion. Hidan, as far as I know, is the only one to practice a "named religion", but, as I said, I have not fully watched Naruto in a loooong time. So its a bit odd his entire character is just "abandoned" when hes permanently buried (literally) to never be brought up again. (Ironically, being immortal, Hidan is removed from the plot more permanently than the rest of the Akatsuki who actually die lol)
And, as I brought up in the video, I do think "Jashinism" is re-skinned Satanism to a degree, but there was a bit more there that made me curious about it. So most of the video is just me compiling what I could find with a bit of my own interp[retation.
@@Pseudiom There is only one other religion mentioned by name in Naruto, being "Ninju", which was the religion founded by the Sage of Six Paths, but it's only mentioned once in the entire series, mostly as an explanation for the origin of Jutsu in the series. Based on how it's described, it's basically Taoism in all but name. There's also Kaguya Otsutsuki, who is the closest thing to an actual god in the series, though she's not really a god... at least not in the traditional sense (It's... complicated, and Boruto makes it even more messy). The rest of the time, it's pretty much kept ambiguous.
The thing about Eastern religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, etc.) is that they're based more in philosophy and moral values, while Western and Middle Eastern religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) are structured more like government and legal systems. The only things they really have in common are the worship of a deity, places of worship (Temples, Churches, Mosques, Shrines, etc.), and the concept of an afterlife (Heaven and Hell). There are a few Eastern religions that have adopted traits of the western religions, such as Sikhism having similarities to Islam, but these are fairly rare.
Jashinism, on the other hand, is clearly based more on "New Age" religions and cults, which most of them tend to be based more on the Abrahamic religions, often being a heavily misinterpreted version of Christianity due to most coming into existence in predominantly Christian areas, mostly the United States. The only ones I know of that weren't based on the Abrahamic faiths were the Thugee and a short-lived cult in Oregon that existed in the 70's that was loosely based on Hinduism (I forgot it's name).
Jashinism is real religion, it has been in existence since long ago on Shikoku Island in Japan and have lots of similarities with Buddhism and Shintoism, it still exists today but because of their religious practices and teachings they are working under the shadows. In Naruto version of it they just took some references and nuances from Indian Thugee religion as well.

@@muazinsafavi5731 Yes, they do kill and sacrifice humans and for a reason of course, but nobody in Jashin faith is allowed to inflict physical or emotional pain anywhere before they really know same pain, and they can not kill anybody unless they have experienced such pain on themselves and truely know the pain of others, only prophets and ritualists in Jashin faith are allowed to inflict pain and make sacrifices, because they know what is the true pain and they can differ those who really suffer by pain and those who use pain for their personal benefits and enjoyment. They believe in that - once everybody is enlightened about the true pain, learn to accept it, will be able to enjoy by pain or ignore it completely and after every heathens, sinners and selfish evil men are redeemed or sacrificed in the name of Jashin new prosperous and peaceful world will be created. There are more of interesting information about faith of Jashin, their religious practice, traditions and even holidays, you may google it if you mind.
As a kid of the right age bracket at that time (gets into naruto in puberty, and when shippuden hits is a teen ready to "grow up" with the series) I kind of feel that the pain aspect of this might be linked with the weird romanticizing of self harm floating around the web around the turn of the 10s. The whole know the pain before inflicting it on others reeks of OG jeff the killer fanfiction authorship.

This is the most I have laughed at one of your videos. This is good shit. Like this is getting to final fantasy house levels of delusion and that it's always good for a cringing laugh.
I am going to preface this by saying that I think these kind of microcultures online back in the day were extremely attractive to lonely kids/teenagers, and I think it's fun to have a laugh at it while also realizing that the kids who would take part in this shit were often very isolated individuals looking for community. They could be really dangerous environments for kids, and I wanna share my little experience because I was in this community for a while when I was a kid. The Jashinism thing was basically a petri dish for kids with mental illness and/or kids who were really isolated and desperate.
I used to be a member of one of the biggest Jashinism forums back in the day, and ended up running my own for a while. Unfortunately I can't get into my old email account that I used for Jashin related stuff to find receipts of forum posts/comments. We're talking 15 or so years ago. I was definitely an edgelord little kid, and the community appealed to me because it was basically where the goth Naruto fans congregated.
I won't go into huge detail here but the whole thing was rife with kids hurting themselves sometimes really severely and sharing it. It was essentially a place where kids would self harm and hype each other up to do it over and over. It was horrible and I'm glad I lost interest in it after a couple of years. I think about the kids of that forum from time to time and I hope they are in better places, but I suspect many of them spiraled downward from there.

If I can recommend a topic, why not the life of Nicholas Roerich, or the weird mix of Buddhism and Greek religion in the Bactrian Kingdom?
Roerich's been on my to-do list for a while. I'm just hesitant with him because he's one of my favorite artists and historical figures and I know there is a lot to cover with him. I could make two videos alone on the "Banner of Peace" and "Roerich Pact" without even touching Nicholas. And that's not even getting to his artwork which could have several videos on it. I'm at least hoping to do something on him early to mid next year, but can't say what or when.
Bactrian Kingdom is another good topic. I may make a general video on the interactions between Greece and Buddhism at some point. So that would probably get rolled into that. But I'd have to look into it more. I only have surface level knowledge of it.

Some other Naruto fandom theorists Jashin is a Ōtsutsuki family member because the Ōtsutsuki alien can be a god once they are more powerful than anyone else, since Jashin is a "God" it would make a lot of sense, but it's just a theory nobody knows what the Jashin actually came from in the Naruto universe.

Would you say that these sorts of "cults" were more common 10-20 years ago? Flat earthers notwithstanding, I don't seem to see as much radical weirdness on the internet as I used to.
It's hard to say. I could really write an entire essay on them. I don't think they are "new" or "old" thought. I think they're just more benign examples of the same impulse that use to create apocalyptic cults in the 70-80s and New Age Cults in the 60's. It goes all the way back to weird sects of Christianity that emerged in the 1700 and 1800s and even with the Taiping Rebellion in the late 1800s. You can even go back to esoteric Christian and Muslim groups in the Middle Ages.
I'd recommend Michael Barkun's "Disaster and the Millennium" if you're interested in the historical precedent for these groups. His thesis is basically that stress, disaster, and isolation cause people to believe in a "Saving Myth" derived Christianity/Islam. Which they adapted to their local traditions and culture (often this occurred in areas with heavy European imperial importance in East Asia, India, and Australia). Barkun thinks this only happened in rural locations, but I think the Internet has created a digital space where these cults/groups can emerge again. As I feel most people interact with the Internet as a constant stress factor. This causes people, especially younger ones, to seek out a pseudo-religion. As with the internet, this has caused these beliefs to adapt characteristics from Anime and Video games. So you get things like people worshipping a Naruto blood-god.
I do feel like groups in the vein of Jashinism were more common a decade ago due to the Internet's decentralized nature. I don't think they have died off thought. Their form has simply changed as more people flowed into areas like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. With the current centralized, Social Media based Internet, these groups have mostly just become political or based around CZcamsrs/media influencers (cults of personality). I think this is just a result of the current fad as the medium of the Internet has shifted from smaller Forums to Social Media. But odd little groups still do exist in places like Discord. They've just become harder to catalog as they can change or vanish easier. Leaving behind no trace.
I don't think they're dead though. When the internet shifts again (which it will) they'll take new form.

@@Pseudiom Thanks for the response. Jives pretty well with my own ideas about it. Weirdness thrives in isolation; and the more centralized the internet has become, the less weird it's gotten. Barkun reminds me of terror management theory, and how people latch onto ideologies and collectives larger than themselves to ameliorate the fear of death. This leads to the eternal question of why these individuals are drawn to obscure or heretical rather than mainstream movements.
@@Anthropomorphic Maybe It's the self importance draped in the sense of comunity that a teen who wants to build their own image of self by shunning the beliefs of the old folk but remaining in the relative safety of a group with evident and available set of rules seeks. I mean, it being just the familiar (a very occidental set of ideas) with a new anime hat and a fresh coat of "spicy wise orient" paint made it easy to adopt for teens with little reference. And the avoiding of the mainstream is probably that you'll probably feel more special as a member of 20 on a small chapel that a member por 10.000 in a cathedral. (will spell check when sober)

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

Never watched/read One Piece but I have heard that theory. As with all my videos, I look to research/read/watch the topic beforehand. And with One Piece... Well, I would have a lot to read. Wouldn't rule it out (because it is an interesting series with interesting style), but it wouldn't be anytime soon. Never say never though.

She was obsessed with Naruto and took a bunch of pics on her bed which if I remember was COVERED with Naruto shit like pillows and stuff like that and the guy she dated after me leaked one of her photos. I think it was on ED for awhile on the Naruto page but maybe they were taken down I haven't checked in like 10 years. This was around 2009 lol

Yeah, ED is petty much dead. One of their admins was a drug addict who ran off with a bunch of money or something? Don't really know, but its been down for months. No idea what's going on there. I'm sure a lot of people could say a lot things about it, but I was never invested in it.

I am 30 and could be considered "emo" the most fucked up thing about it is it was known for shit people made up about it online and your wrong about emo being an invention of the 2000's it was invented in 1985 by the band rites of spring and it invented mathcore, screamo, and post hardcore respectively by mixing scream punk from washington DC and Boston respectively. In 2001 a man on the Jerry springer show invented what is now know as the basics for the pop punk based version of emo music in the year 2001. Any way pop punk decided to steal the name from emo and it was renamed emotive hardcore and emo was changed forever good example of how emotive hardcore sounded was the bands orchid, remain, touche amore, and seatia.
