The Ego Doesn't Die, It Never Existed

  • A man wishes to understand the death of the ego. He asks how the dissolution of the ego works, how the gifts we each bring the world change as the ego dies, and how do we experience those gifts as we change.
Rupert replies that the ego never really lived so there’s no question of it dying. The ego is not an entity. It is a belief and a feeling. It is an imaginary limitation of the only one that truly is - infinite consciousness, or self-aware being.
The attempt to bring the ego to an end is one of the subtler ways the ego perpetuates itself on the spiritual circuit. So don’t think about the death of the ego, think about who you truly are. Just emphasis that and the apparent ego - that is, the activity of thinking and feeling that I am something other than infinite consciousness - will gradually leave you.
As the sense of being a separate self dissolves, this will then affect not only your thoughts and feelings, but also your activities and relationships in the world.
This clip comes from one of Rupert's In-Person Retreats in the US in March, 2022.

The ego is like a mirage...the mirage is simply seen through and recognized not to be water. The water never existed and so it is not destroyed. However, the mirage also does not disappear once recognized...it is just that the belief in the water is dispelled. Once a mirage is seen to be a mirage (what it really is) and not water (what it is not)...it no longer causes confusion or suffering.

"The ego" is just a concept that actually limits our understanding and progress rather than helps. It also has a negative value.
I say forget about the ego concept word and just talk about the mind and its personality instead.
We need the mind. We also need the personality, but both those can and do change.
The expansion of experience-consciousness happens is non-dependant on the conceptualisations of the mind, but in the progress/change process the mind goes through changes of neurological connections and conceptualisations. The mind wants to stay busy and get mindfood. This is ok.
At a point the mind-personality is not the master anymore, but the best servant of consciousness. But it also never was something negative in and of itself, though it took some incoherent and flow resisting patterns that causes suffering.

My respect to Rupert for his wisdom which is in line with spiritual insights of introspective masters. For me ,the turning point is looking or awareness of ourselves, the body and the mind.We are conditioned to look outside but there is a inner world of thoughts ,feelings ,sensations and awareness which we are not aware of.This turning inwards is the key.If we keep looking outside for truths,we will only find relative truth, not ultimate truths of ourselves.

"Don’t fight with the ego, otherwise the ego will eat you! The very fight will destroy you. Fighting with anything non-existent is the most dangerous thing in the world. It is like fighting with darkness; if you start fighting with darkness, wrestling, even if you are a Mohammed Ali you are not going to win. Soon you will be tired, exhausted, and you will fall flat on the ground, thinking that darkness seems to be very powerful. Darkness is not powerful, darkness is not weak, because darkness does not exist at all. All that you need is just a small candle and the darkness will be gone.
I call that small candle meditation, and out of that small light thousands of flowers blossom within your heart: love blossoms, freedom blossoms, truth blossoms, godliness blossoms, and so on and so forth. There is no end to it - it is an eternal garden. Flowers and flowers… your whole being becomes fragrant.
Don’t fight with the ego. See where it is, what it is, otherwise it will come in some other form. You will push it away on this side, it will come from another side. You will repress one aspect, it will come through another aspect."

So don’t think about the death of the ego, think about who you truly are. Just emphasis that and the apparent ego - that is, the activity of thinking and feeling that I am something other than infinite consciousness - will gradually leave you. "
However, he should have acknowledged that there have been very important exceptions, some if only by "accident." It is simply not possible to read the life of Ramana Maharshi or Adi Da (or even Steve Ford and perhaps Eckart Tolle), without seeing the very dramatic moments (all accompanied by tremendous fear) where in fact the ego did die, and these beings were entirely transformed as the true Self was revealed to them and as them.
And too, at least in the life of Adi Da, he did intuit, and then consciously pursue, the death of the ego. This is very clearly described in his biography, culminating in the Chapter THE DEATH OF NARCISSUS.

Unfortunately, not at all. The ego can be just as selfless as it is as selfish in action. Often the ego uses selfless acts and beliefs that propagate its continuance. In a very rough sense, ego might be thought of as the opposite of love, but love is not a thought. Thoughts appear out of the Source that is love.

Everything Spira says here is on target. However, there are other subtleties involved. The point is that people have acted egotistically for SO LONG. Egotistical habits are persistent and ancient. Meaning: it's possible to say "The ego doesn't exist" PREMATURELY. In other words: You can say it without it having much effect in your daily life. You continue to act egotistically. So in some sense, although it doesn't exist (strictly speaking), your current lifestyle is testimony enough of its existence. Through consistent and dedicated practice only does Spira's statement acquire real life and validity. Spira is correct when he says that "The death of the ego" talk can perpetuate egotistic activity, but it's also true, unfortunately, that saying "The ego doesn't exist" prematurely can be a subtle and self-snug way of the ego as well (as if to say: "Oh, now I've got it!"). Spira's statement can all too easily become a conceptual garb behind which egotistical habits conceal themselves.

One can have one's own personal preferences, beliefs and opinions in life without necessarily having a strong ego. Also the ego is really tricky because it works in "real" time as you are living which gives you the impression that it's there but all that's there is the lack of true understanding of your higher nature. So he's right just stay focus on the true self and universal consciousness will be reveled. The Ego is false n cusses anger,FALSE happiness, disolution, n all the emotions that the Ego wants you to believe is who n what you are. This is all bullshit because it's generated by a nothingness.
