The key to ALL of these is to let your inhibition GO. Biggest hurdle to the beginning of anything creative - just follow it down the rabbit hole, don't worry if it's "bad" or a "keeper". Thanks for this great vid, Andrew. Really helped me kick myself out of a rut.

A tool that helps me with this is the improve acting technique "yes, and" where anything said/proposed/offered is responded to with "yes", then added to with "and...". In other words, the quality of the offering is irrelevant, it's accepted regardless, and built on, which creates something greater than just that previous element.

Does it help if the next person goes, "No, not a bar, a hair salon!" It all comes to a screeching halt. The "yes, and..." premise helps brainstorming by delaying judgment and just accepting any premise, so instead, "Yes, a bar, which has a hair salon in the back." Which brings us to bartenders and stylists matching drink colors to hairstyles! OMG, it works, I had no idea how to provide an example, and had no idea it would lead to drunk hair colors. *blinks.

A trick I learned about writing lyrics is to take a topic and then writing down words that are related to this topic (5-15 words).
Then I try to write about this topic but without using any of the words. For example: Writing about space, and I cannot use the words: black hole, far, stars, silence.

a really good lyric writing tip, or maybe just different way of looking at lyrics:
i was watching an old interview with kurt cobain where he was saying that only the first two lines of Serve the Servants is about their newfound status as a rock band, and the rest of the song is about multiple different things. i thought the concept of all of the lyrics in a song not having to be about one thing was really liberating
you can have 3 lines about your dog dying, a chorus about going on vacation with your friends, 6 lines about how you wish you were in a different place in your life, etc.
and honestly even if you’re writing about “different subjects” there’s usually a really interesting through-line that will emerge

Feeder's "Buck Rogers" sort of has this going on. I think if you simply want to "write a tune", this can be very helpful. But I also think that if you want to make a more meaningful song then simply replacing the words can work as well. But the question most don't bother answering is what they actually want.
I think that Kurt probably just wanted to make a tune. If he wanted to say something more, he would have put more thought into it, obviously. But if someone out there simply wants to "make a song", they should know that there is no boundary and that those extreme bollocks of nothingness will work just as well. But there are so many people who think it actually has to mean something, it makes me feel bad for them often times.
So don't let others define everything to the point that you just don't do anything - do things and assess them later. It's music, not bussiness related decisions or a god damn surgery where life is actually at stake.

Just want to drop in one more lyric writing 'trick' for getting started, and this is really helpful for getting something going when you just feel blocked in general.
Pick any song you like, anything at all. Write new lyrics for it. Then write new music for the lyrics you just wrote.
I don't know why, but when I do this I have a much easier time STARTING the lyrics, then I usually only get a few lines into it before my own ideas for the music start to come in, and then, well, that's it. Just keep following yourself down that rabbit hole. The lyrics can sometimes follow the cadence of the original at first, but I find once I start incorporating ideas for the music, the lyrical cadence kind of naturally changes as well. The end result is completely unrecognizable from the song I started with.

I find it easiest to start a song idea with a guitar part, but I actually record bass as the second or third thing I do to the song. Although bass Is often low in the mix, I think it helps to record bass pretty early on, it helps to centre everything in the song around a bassline.

I usually just go with whatever I hear in my head first, which is usually some thematic line, then I build on from there. I find it best to not have a set process for writing music. If you're constantly humming a tune, start there. Make what attracts you to listen to it over and over. From your "running through the dirt" -
I've been running through the dirt
trying to catch up to you
You dropped your shirt on the way out
    I never doubted you, I can't believe
    I didn't see you leave.
