Watched this with my family when I was a little kid, one of the few family memories we made, so it holds a special place in my heart. It's a movie worthy of a full restoration, along another that was a Hallmark Hall of Fame near the same time, The Count of Monte Cristo, again, the family joined together for that one too. Those Hallmark's in those days were something very special with top notch actors and quality scripts.
I saw this on television when it was shown in 1976 and I have been searching for it since then. It is my all time favorite version of Beauty and the Beast. George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere had such good chemistry because they were actually married to each other. I’m so glad someone put this out here. I wish I could get a clean copy of it with the voice and picture synchronized.
I loved this when I first saw it as a young girl when it first came out. It's still one of the best versions I've ever seen. Both the lead actors who happened to be married in real life have a wonderful chemistry with each other.
Saw this George C. Scott version of "Beauty and the Beast" 38 years ago. Was the first time I was introduced to this romantic story. Have seen many versions of this story in motion pictures, animation and television and have enjoyed them all. May the romance continue. Thanks for posting.
It still has the magic it did the first time I saw it on tv, many years ago. It is the only version of Beauty and the Beast that makes me believe in the power of love. Just Beautiful.
I remember all those years ago when the movie was advertised on the Hallmark Hall of Fame and saw some advertising photos. I thought it was silly after seeing George C. Scott in Patton. Now all these decades later, this movie is tender, charming, beautiful scenery, beautiful gowns and pleasant acting. I purchased the DVD today and can add this to my collection of Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Malcolm's List, the 1970 Jane Eyre with, of course, George C. Scott. I thought the ballroom dancing scene was so unusual that I repeat it.
I've so enjoyed watching this version.. the story is so fresh and interesting and the character of Belle and Beast so enchanting and out of the box.. so fun 👍👍👍
I first watched this as a child in the 80's, when my Dad recorded it for me onto video! I've not seen it since the late 80's and absolutely loved it then. Sure, the picture quality/sounds wasn't quite right on this version, but thank you for putting it up on youtube. I really enjoyed watching it again and taking a trip down memory lane. :) What a great movie!
I remember watching this beautiful movie when I was a young girl. George C. Scott is a beautiful man. I enjoyed seeing these two amazing actors work together.
I saw this movie for the first time when I was fourteen which was three years ago. My mom loved George C. Scott and when I saw this had him in it, I just had to watch it. Ever since then I LOVE this movie.
I remember this from when I was a young girl. The first live action version and it impressed me so much. George C. Scott was a huge talent at that time and did a superb job in portraying the beast.
I have never seen this movie and im glad I found it this is actually a great movie must share with my grown children this version of Beauty and the Beast. 2 thumbs up
The best version I've seen. I've been looking for it for a long time. If it comes out in DVD I will get it.George C. Scott, one of my favorites, R.I.P.
I have been trying to get this movie for over twenty years I was told it was in vault Now I find it here on utube I will keep it until I can buy it on dvd I have loved this movie for over thirty five years George C Scott was my all time favorite actor
Just watched George in Jane Eyer and was impressed with his acting compared to the other roles which was mostly dynamic and tough. Now to watch this found by chance. Thank you for sharing it.
Interestingly just found the Jane Eyre version you are talking about on Amazon.. I loved that one and was so pleased when I did a search and it was there!! I watched it a few days ago.. It IS my favorite portrayal of Jane Eyre and THIS is my favorite of Beauty and the Beast .. tied with the 1946 Black and White version .. French..
I looked for this movie everywhere on dvd or vcr and could not acquire it. To whomever put it on here thank you very much. My all time favorite Beauty and the Beast.
Me too, since my adolescent years when I was reading only fairy tales dreaming something fantastic would happen to me too....It teaches us to look beyond appearances in people and look for the good in them and to be good and to do good...I am so grateful for being able to rediscover it here....and relive the memories of the "magick" again at 60 years old!!!
Akira Redcat No. There's another what is older. 1946 :) But I found it in the CZcams in my language Hungarian (this tiny country is a middle of Europe :) ) But you can found it: "Szépség és a szörnyeteg" black and white movie. :) :*
GB iv'e told so many people about this film, not one has said they didn't like it, it's the best vertion ever made, it never looses it's charm and magic.
The first movie version of "Beauty & The Beast" that I watched was not the 1990 Disney version, but this 1976 version starring George C. Scott and his wife Trish van Devere, screen on Malaysia's RTM when I was still in primary school. It was also in this movie that I learned that Beauty's name was Belle. Scott and Devere‘s stellar performances aside, the part of the movie that stuck in my mind was the enchanting waltz played when Belle and the Beast danced (@48:27). I wish the melody had been augmented, and also adapted into as part of the soundtracks of the later Disney versions.
Thank you for posting this movie. I have looked for it everywhere for years but found it here now. Made my evening watching it again after all these years. Will be watching it again in a couple of days.
Excellent Movie with George C.Scott portraying the Beast and the young Lady who has the Graceful touch to handle The Beast where the Wisdom she dispenses to the Beast challenges him to do right thoughts and deeds
I like the way that this version of "Beauty And The Beast" ends because I don't think it would be as easy as all that for Belle to accept that the Beast has suddenly become a handsome prince. (Yes, I'm aware that George C. Scott is not classically handsome but that's not the point...and he was evidently handsome in the eyes of his wife, who plays Belle here, because they stayed married until his death.) It might take her longer than just a few minutes to accept that the only thing which has changed about the Beast is his outward appearance.
OMG! I have been looking for this movie for so many years, bc I had only seen a part of it as a very young child. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS🤗!!! What a happy day for me😊!
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on television in 1977. I appreciated the fact that it was more faithful to the original story, rather than the Disneyfied version. If you look at any illustrations from the 1800s, the beast was depicted as a hideous pig-like creature...one would truly have to be in love to agree to marry such a monster. Most film versions have a shaggy, cuddly-looking beast, sort of lion-like or like a big dog...certainly more lovable than a pig! The main thing I remembered about watching this version was my disappointment when he was transformed back into George C Scott, who I did not find to be a terribly attractive human being and way too old (to my then-teenage eyes)! Even so, thank you for posting this version to youtube, Michelangelo. Great blast from the past. Now I need to rewatch Cocteau's version. And I'm totally addicted to the 2017 Live Disney version (with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens).
@Rick O'Shay hate is such a strong word and I have beautiful friends who ended up with wonderful men who didn't exactly match them in the looks department. Not that they were hideous, just not the "prince charming" types either... -Marie
@Rick O'Shay forgive me. I thought we were merely using the physical attributes as basis for "ugly". In that respect, I'm fairly confident I can tell an attractive person regardless of gender. I'm also ignorant to the polls you speak of and maybe I am living in a fantasy world where beautiful women and good men have ended up together. Or maybe my introverted nature made me choose the people I associate with to be fairy-folk themselves. I have been called a weirdo and a witch, so that may be the case.
it used to be a musical on broadway along time ago maria and I saw it with my mom and my brother marshall but I was like 11 years old when I saw it back then
Bravo! Excellently done, but with George C. Scott in it that should not surprise anyone. He was always a superb actor no matter what he took on. Thanks for uploading this version, I shall enjoy it whenever I wish now. Thank you.
I do wish I could find this movie on DVD. I saw it first on TV decades ago, and it was my introduction to the acting of George C. Scott, one of my favorite actors. (I preferred George C. Scott to Orson Welles as Rochester in "Jane Eyre".) I was a little sad that the picture was fuzzy and sound sync was off. But I love the interactions and growing friendship between Belle and the Beast.
George c. scott was brilliant. He was (imo) the best scrooge in the 1984 live action "christmas carol". Im also reminded of when mum and i used to watch beauty and the beast (ron pearlman and linda hamilton) back in the late 80s
As Scrooge he was outstanding, and I love all the old versions of Scrooge. This was the second book I read from cover to cover after I got my first pair of glasses. Wonderful story about love that goes beyond skin deep and meer looks. Some have compared it to beastiality but, it was a curse, he was never really an animal. Just royalty, learning humility.

Im only about 10 mins in to this movie, waiting to see George C Scott!!! l never saw this version growing up.....any other recomnendations on movies to watch?.....l hang out with sappy romances by Hallmark!!!...Have a nice day✌
Some of the scenes are better than other Beauty and the Beast movies I've seen. The hide-and-seek game is so cute, and Belle's reactions to the Beast are realistic. Belle is really tough on her sisters (which they deserve!) I don't like the father at all in this movie. He's pretty horrible, and this is the only movie in which I'm glad he loses his money. At least Belle has one decent relative, Nick. Unfortunately, the ending is really lame. George C. Scott has a wonderful voice and can deliver his lines so beautifully, but...he's not exactly a handsome king! He makes an excellent Beast, though.
Virginia McKenna acted with Bernard Lee in Born Free. So lovely to see them together again. This is wonderful. One of my favourite stories. XXX Yes, thank you for putting it on CZcams and sharing. xxx
_Interesting "adaptation". I always read the Creator's notes in the description box and I almost didn't watch it because of the description. But after 15 minutes into it, I found that the basics were still there . And by the end I could see that the moral of the story was still being told - the ability to love and be loved by looking at the spirit instead of the outer shell_
I liked this the first time I saw it, I think when it first aired on TV. One of my favorite films is the Beauty & the Beast by Cocteau, & I'm relieved that the Scott version doesn't try to emulate that one. This one isn't a Cocteau, but it charts its own way & is original & well done. I was especially relieved that Scott's beast isn't feline like Cocteau's, as no one could compare to that purring beautiful beast breathing "ma Belle" to Beauty as well as to his incredible gorgeousness. Scott's porcine beast is perfectly suited to him, to both his appearance & his voice. I wonder whose idea it was to have this Beast shown as a boar, the director's or Scott's. Scott is great, as usual, & Vandevere is also excellent, with their growing relationship revealed subtlety. Anyone who loves this version should watch Jean Cocteau's version, which is a true masterpiece of cinema & fascinating entertainment. But the Cocteau version should be seen on a larger screen to appreciate its unbelievable beauty & magic. When Cocteau's Beast softly breaths out Beauty's name in French, you understand how she could not help but love him. (The actor playing the Beast, Jean Marrait (Sp?), was the longtime lover/companion of Cocteau, starred in several of his films.)
I agree completely about Jean Cocteau's version ! It is amazing .. ! I don't speak French but subtitles are really not even necessary .. It has remained one of my most favorite movies of all time.. I actually own a copy .. now on DVD .. converted from vhs tape .. Anyone who gets the chance to see this one should not pass it up.
OMG its amazing .May be that time technology, Graphics, CGI is was not exists but the actor ,Director, Script writer touch the exact nerve of audiences ❤ the movie shoews what's a fairytale actually wabtbto tale ...the Moral of the story . such a matured script writing. ❤❤

So well done if you got stuck on quality of film and audio you missed the story. . . .that is a shame. Excellent
I love this version!!!
This is A Truly Classic Film❤️💝💘💖…..Many Thanks for Posting It❗️💯🅰️➕
this is wonderful. the actress is really charming. thank you for uploading
Great version. loved it. It has those horrible sisters that are also there in the old french film.
(The actor playing the Beast, Jean Marrait (Sp?), was the longtime lover/companion of Cocteau, starred in several of his films.)
good point and you made a good one on that cause that was like a total spot on right there
I agree completely about Jean Cocteau's version ! It is amazing .. ! I don't speak French but subtitles are really not even necessary .. It has remained one of my most favorite movies of all time.. I actually own a copy .. now on DVD .. converted from vhs tape .. Anyone who gets the chance to see this one should not pass it up.
Loved this ever since I was ten!😆

its very nice story,,,a true love does not matter if your ugly or beautiful,,,,the important is to love each other!
I just want to see ONE version where they don't pretend his worst attribute is his face and NOT that he's keeping her captive...
