Thanks you for this explanation. I was always wondering if my method was the best (scenario 3) However I come from a F2P and low on pilots. So once ships came out I was in dire need of farming those pilots while struggling to gear up my standard squad. Specially with Meta changing I can't always follow every change due to the slow progression. Eventually unlocked my Zeta challenge today. However, during this farming I often felt terrible thinking, what if scenario 1 actually was better. Maybe yes... in the short run. I might have my Zader and sure I might have from that moment on gotten #1 in guild raids every week (instead of 1 raid in 3 weeks.... yes my guild is rather slow) So if I may suggest scenario 4! Safe up like scenario 1 to get your Zeta Vader and Maul (both are extremely good for raids and many many toons needing those raid gear) From there on follow scenario 3 which may put you 100 days behind. But from there on, farming pilots will be alot easier because you are #1 in guild raids a lot more often with a lot more rewards to gear up pilots so your rank will climb a lot faster in ship battles. Giving you an easier road. Scenario 4 might proof to be the optimal road to take. A slight path of 1 and 3. See Scenario 4 as a 100 day investment to have a faster scenario 3 after. While getting 800 tokens as being 500+ rank in shipments I could still level up ship shards from GW regardless. Meaning, once I start to swap my scenario from 1 to 3 I will put those ships and challenges to a quick climb. After a year it might proof to be equal when it comes to Zeta amounts but a sooner income of raid gear making your account in totallity having a better outcome. What would you say @SmithyD?
F2P. went all-in on ships from the beginning. focused only on Zeta challenge. Only purchased ships from GW and focused especially on DS ships. At ship launch spent all remaining crystals on 499 ship packs and got lucky and a good head start. Have unlocked Zeta. and since then have G11 Zader and G11 Zoba. and 10/20 on next upgrade TBD. I am still very ship focused. Because I went heavy on ships in the beginning i've been top 20 in ships which helps. I am now getting 1-5 Zetas per week from challenge, buying Zetas once i get credits and buying Scimitar/Slave1 shards. If I could go back I would not change a thing.
sup dude! i'm finding some amazing synergy between windu capital/ tie advanced/slave 1/ 5's ship/ and scimitar. you use scimitar's ability on tie advanced with windu giving it taunt and crit immune. it counters and gives target lock to everyone, then boba and 5's abilities hit like trucks vs everyone
A hybrid option to consider: I have temporarily stopped spending Fleet Tokens on anything but Rex's ARC-170, Slave 1 and Zetas. As soon as I get 20 Zetas (which I will likely spend on Finn), I'll go back to farming Dark Side ships and crew in the Fleet shop to take on the Tarkin challenges.
My Zeta Drop rate has been GARBAGE. I unlocked the Zeta Ability Mat challenge on 29 December. Since then, I've bought 4 Zeta mats from Fleet Shipments. I BOUGHT my 20th zeta material on 5 Feb. That means from 34 Zeta Ability Challenges, I only got 16 Zeta Mats. I only got a double drop one time. Since unlocking the Zeta challenge, I've farmed Sun Fac to 7, and I've bought a handful of Blueprints to get Biggs and Wedge's ships to 6*, and I'm buying the occasional Imperial TIE Fighter Blueprint shipment to get it to 6* as well. I'm able to stay top 50 easily and usually top 20 in my ship shard. (which is why I am continuing to promote/level my ships) Great video detailing the pitfalls of ignoring your ships. It's a VERY fine line of managing your resources, and arguably, Fleet tokens are one of the most difficult to manage, since there are so many options available to players.
I'm also using your third scenario. The only difference is that when I finally unlocked and 3-starred the Zeta Ability challenge, I concentrated all my fleet currency on buying zeta mats as well, so I could get my first full zeta ability within about 10 days. Now I'm going back to farming Scimitar from fleet shipments and using the leftover fleet currency to continue buying zeta mats.
Hi smithie D went heavy into ships right from the beginning. Went dark side first and have remained focused on that ever since. It currently takes me 15 days to zeta a character, as I no longer use the shipment rewards in ships and only buy zeta material. I am usually ranked 1 but since I have taken out my light side ships ( they have more power points) my defense is a little dodgy and I drop to about 6 overnight. Focusing on ships and therefore zeta has dramatically improved my toons for both arena and HAAT. Hope this helps.
I think the devs will, long term, make certain that ships remain relevant. They will continue to drop things like zetas into the game that will require, at least in part, strong ships. I think any strategy that forgoes ships in the short term to pick up zetas will leave you scrambling down the road to play catch up. I think buying zetas from fleet shipments is selling today at the cost of tomorrow. Seems like a short-sighted approach!
I just started to farm k-ren . He is looking too powerfull now for me. And will work awesome with some teams. But like you said in video we all should wait cause after NIHILUS arive, sooner will be zetas on dooku , opress, or something like that . For sure . New sith meta will kinda colide with this new rogue one(Dark side) meta eventually. Btw you have awesome videos and explainations. Good job.
Nice vid! I fall in #3. But I've farmed chars outta Fleet. Currently getting SunFac. I am rebel heavy so I had to get light ships and use them in arena while farming more dark side chars. I'm finally working on my 8th ship's final 65 shards... been a trek.
Another great video, Smithie D! I have unlocked the Zeta Mats challenge and 3-starred it. I run a Home One capital ship and I still farm Biggs, Wedge, JC and Ahsoka in GW and JC and Geo Soldier's hard nodes for their ships. I have used Fleet currency for Zetas since I 3-starred the Zeta Mats challenge, but I may start buying Slave 1 shards from Fleet shipments soon.
I'm currently in scenario 2 category. Unfortunately it took me too long to realize I would need dark side ships, not to mention they make it very hard to get them to where they need to be in order to complete Tarkins challenges. Once I get my first Zeta I'll work on dark side ships to push me into the zeta challenge.

I've just ignored ships and just collect 1000 tokens a day and build up my pvp team I'm nearly in the top 50 so that seems to be working for me progression is very difficult in the game if you don't make the right descion it's possible to get in the top ten if your f2p but it's a long road to get there but ship tokens I find are essential to your progress thanks for the video
At first I completely ignored ships since I wanted a 7* maul. I now see that this was a mistake. I am now focusing all of my gw tokens and ship tokens on ships.
I had to watch this twice to figure out what your scenario 3 is. I've been using fleet shipments to get gear, but now am going to switch to your recommendation. I'm getting pretty low drop rates on zetas from the challenge. I got zero from the last two. I didn't realize they weren't a guaranteed drop until I finally beat the challenge last week.
I've been top 20 in ships for two months and feel like I've wasted so many fleet tokens :( I did find this video helpful! Imma start farming the ds ships!
I use Darth lead Zeta, vader, Emperor, Dooku and Savage Opus in PVP in top 10. I use Biggs, Wedge, Darth Maul, Vader, Boba Fet, First Order Tie Pilot, 555s and Jedi Consular in ship and I am in the top 20. :-) It is lots of fun and been playing sense it was released back in Nov 2015. SO have seen my fare share of ups and down but glade they have brought the game back to being fun.
I'm currently using method 2. I have always wanted a competitive Jedi team in arena and need that QGJ zeta. I was farming DS ships at first and got to 5/5 4* ships for 5* Executrix challenge and I think 5/8 5* ships for Zeta challenge, but I stopped once I realized I didn't have the resources to actually gear and star DS toons that I don't even use :P Plus I hear RNG for the Zeta Challenge can really screw you over...don't really want to deal with that so early. Once I get that first zeta I'll get back at it.
been using the 1200 daily. trying to zeta phasma. been working on first order since before the rework. now with the rework phasma and kylo are retarded. they are so good. working on FOTP but its a long grind. hes currently 4 star. I never had everything to make full empire and didn't start on the rebels early enough like I should have. so they are all 5 stars with a 6 star ackbar. everyone runs them anyway so I'm excited about First Order

yeah since GW is guild activity today I was gonna spend the GW tokens on dark side ships. normally I save the ship tokens for the slave1 and for Vader since I only need 15 shards to get him to 7*. I need to lvl up the tarkin capitals ship also. I was farming Barris and EE on hard nodes maybe gonna shift to FOTFP. but I'm gonna do what I said and farm scimitar and slave1 from ship shipments and pick up maul from guild shipments.
On my shard Im top 10, but cant hold top5, I run Mace's Endurance and Asoka, Consular, Plo Koon, Clone at 7*, Rex 5*, Five 6*, Slave1 5* and Bistan U-Wing 5*

I've been farming ships since the very beginning when they got released and still no challenge. slave 1 Is the only ship I'm looking for and barely get in arena shipments. Yet I have stayed in the top 50 ever since and was wondering if I should just go for zetas now?
Running droids since day 1 I have been zeta farming for a while now with about twenty but nobody to actually use them on. Using an Endurance Target Lock abuse fleet which sacrifices ships as the AOE annihilates the enemy fleet I snag #2 in fleet battles, solely using GW ships and a 4 star Vader tie. I could zeta Vader but to no real advantage in Arena as I'm running droids there. Maxxed Boba with regenerating protection sounds cool for GW but I steamroll that with droids. Maul looks neat and would give emperor that stealth but all I use emperor for is a Chirpantine play in phase 3 of Haat. Help! I'm farming a bunch of useless zetas with no droids other than K2so having use for them? And that's only useful if Jyn is leading, not HK.
At first I thought that ships would not be really that important but now I'm even refreshing the shop just so I can get 4 shards for Slave 1 and the Scimitar. I'm not sure if I want to Zeta QGJ or Vader
And also I didn't thought about it before but with Darth Nihilus being a sith would probably work just fine under Vader leader. Geez I really hope I have the needed characters for the event at the end of the month...
I'm f2p and today I'll get my first zeta material, it took me like a month, more or less, and the only thing I did is save the tokens, I only have 3 dark side ships and it will probably take me like 2 months to get the others 2 ships because I have to gear and level the characters plus farming the ship, but I'm not in a hurry, for now I think I'll go for qgj zeta and save another month and evaluate who's my best choice in that moment.
Alberto Gonzalez QGJ zeta is good but only if you already have a jedi team. If you have a strong vader, maybe you should put the zetas in him cuz it doesn't need any other zetas to be awesome, unlike QGJinns who needs Yoda's
lukas kolosal I have a jedi team and I don't have any other good team with zeta right now I'm using wiggs, that's why I'm up to QGJ zeta meanwhile I get a vader team or another
i'm usually just below the 200 range in ships so I get 1k and I just use the tokens to buy all my ships and I still need a few to 4 or 5*. I don't really do the GW daily aside from the 1 required battle...

I dont have a single Zeta yet but rank on the 50s in arena and 100-50s in ships.. plus I rank usually 2nd or 1st place in raid and im F2P. I do debate a lot on dropping my ships to starts getting zetas... Any thoughts? Anybody? They bad thing about this game is that it changes meta A LOT!!! so the current meta can be obsolete in a month....
I am doing the 800 per day one because I am not really interested in the ships I will begin farming them from Galactic War after I get all of the Galactic War characters maxed out and after I get my Zeta Vader.
im stuck in the 1k tokens range but im farming zetas from ship arena shipments cause i have fallen behind in arena and its getting hard to compete i unlocked zeta challenge but i cant beat it yet.
Even though you say it so easily, top 100-200, it is not that easy for me. Neither in Pvp. So I used FS to get toons like Sun Fac, but I didn't invest so much in Ships. Bugger me. Thanks for pointing that out. I thought I'd never reach a zeta.
+Nick Jorgensen Its good for the level but once you start leveling higher the team you mentioned would perform as well once you hit level 75+ they dont really gear that well in stats wise compared to others like Wedge Biggs or Empire
Id be using the ship currency for the fleet shipments though, i was wondering since gearing up characters takes longer for ftp, if and buying a few stun cuff parts every now and then helps, if its better or worse to only use the ship currency for zeta materials, or if it can be spread around
Buying the occasional gear shipment won't hurt. I chose to go directly for unlocking the Zeta Ability Mat challenge rather than saving for anything else, but along the way I bought some gear (stun cuffs mostly).
+Joe Trent I did it with max characters it was very easy all I can suggest is to beat it you don't need to 3* it for the ship. As long you put some gear on your characters and mods keep trying till you complete it I would say go for characters your gonna use in other areas of the game so your not wasting gear
I believe you didn't take into account that farming the characters needed for the dark side ships to be able to do the challenge is nearly impossible for a f2p, while getting a working fleet under a different commander, ie Ackbar and Windu, is way easier, and you can get top 5 easily doing that, also having characters who are viable in other game modes such as mod challenges, yoda and palpatine event, the raids and the arena (well okay, Boba is great in arena but the other guys aren't, except Vader whose ship is impossible to get) I think you made some calculations but didn't take into account enough factors. If I followed your advice I'd have a fleet which wouldn't be good enough in fleet arena due to the absence of Vader who is paramount to Tarkin formations, no characters useful to unlock Yoda nor Palpatine (and we all know how good Palpatine is atm), no good characters for the mod challenges, so yeah I would have zetas but no one to put them on, which is kinda pointless.
+Matteo C. It was Barris then Barris again. She is ok I use her in Phase 4 of AAT with my Rebels does a good job for me keeping them alive until Enraged
Yeah, I've bought 4, unlocked my first Zeta Ability Mat Challenge on 29 December, and only got my 20th Zeta this past monday (6 Feb). So in 5.5 weeks, 20 mats. 4 purchased in fleet. Some people have stellar luck.
I'd been running EP/TFP/Shoretrooper (4*)/Vader/Boba Fett in Arena, so I gave it to Vader so now I'm running Zader/EP/TFP/Shore/RG I'm thinking about trying Dooku in place of RG since he's so fast, has a stun/double stun in his special, and double attack basic for more TM removal.

He's also including the 1,200 per day that you would be getting once you can do the zeta challenge and assuming it all goes to buying zetas

I've been farming ships since the very beginning when they got released and still no challenge. slave 1 Is the only ship I'm looking for and barely get in arena shipments. Yet I have stayed in the top 50 ever since and was wondering if I should just go for zetas now?
Running droids since day 1 I have been zeta farming for a while now with about twenty but nobody to actually use them on. Using an Endurance Target Lock abuse fleet which sacrifices ships as the AOE annihilates the enemy fleet I snag #2 in fleet battles, solely using GW ships and a 4 star Vader tie. I could zeta Vader but to no real advantage in Arena as I'm running droids there. Maxxed Boba with regenerating protection sounds cool for GW but I steamroll that with droids. Maul looks neat and would give emperor that stealth but all I use emperor for is a Chirpantine play in phase 3 of Haat. Help! I'm farming a bunch of useless zetas with no droids other than K2so having use for them? And that's only useful if Jyn is leading, not HK.

At first I thought that ships would not be really that important but now I'm even refreshing the shop just so I can get 4 shards for Slave 1 and the Scimitar. I'm not sure if I want to Zeta QGJ or Vader
+Yaso Vader I would say Qgj isnt all that in honestly TFP & B2 Combo really hurt Qgj
Vader Zeta is more usable in all game modes
And also I didn't thought about it before but with Darth Nihilus being a sith would probably work just fine under Vader leader. Geez I really hope I have the needed characters for the event at the end of the month...
I'm f2p and today I'll get my first zeta material, it took me like a month, more or less, and the only thing I did is save the tokens, I only have 3 dark side ships and it will probably take me like 2 months to get the others 2 ships because I have to gear and level the characters plus farming the ship, but I'm not in a hurry, for now I think I'll go for qgj zeta and save another month and evaluate who's my best choice in that moment.
Alberto Gonzalez QGJ zeta is good but only if you already have a jedi team. If you have a strong vader, maybe you should put the zetas in him cuz it doesn't need any other zetas to be awesome, unlike QGJinns who needs Yoda's
lukas kolosal I have a jedi team and I don't have any other good team with zeta right now I'm using wiggs, that's why I'm up to QGJ zeta meanwhile I get a vader team or another
i'm usually just below the 200 range in ships so I get 1k and I just use the tokens to buy all my ships and I still need a few to 4 or 5*. I don't really do the GW daily aside from the 1 required battle...
you need to do more GWs.. They help greatly with a lot of things.. like crystals, toons and credits.

I dont have a single Zeta yet but rank on the 50s in arena and 100-50s in ships.. plus I rank usually 2nd or 1st place in raid and im F2P.
I do debate a lot on dropping my ships to starts getting zetas...

They bad thing about this game is that it changes meta A LOT!!! so the current meta can be obsolete in a month....
I am doing the 800 per day one because I am not really interested in the ships I will begin farming them from Galactic War after I get all of the Galactic War characters maxed out and after I get my Zeta Vader.

+Nick Jorgensen Its good for the level but once you start leveling higher the team you mentioned would perform as well once you hit level 75+ they dont really gear that well in stats wise compared to others like Wedge Biggs or Empire

Id be using the ship currency for the fleet shipments though, i was wondering since gearing up characters takes longer for ftp, if and buying a few stun cuff parts every now and then helps, if its better or worse to only use the ship currency for zeta materials, or if it can be spread around
Buying the occasional gear shipment won't hurt. I chose to go directly for unlocking the Zeta Ability Mat challenge rather than saving for anything else, but along the way I bought some gear (stun cuffs mostly).

+Joe Trent I did it with max characters it was very easy all I can suggest is to beat it you don't need to 3* it for the ship.
As long you put some gear on your characters and mods keep trying till you complete it I would say go for characters your gonna use in other areas of the game so your not wasting gear

I believe you didn't take into account that farming the characters needed for the dark side ships to be able to do the challenge is nearly impossible for a f2p, while getting a working fleet under a different commander, ie Ackbar and Windu, is way easier, and you can get top 5 easily doing that, also having characters who are viable in other game modes such as mod challenges, yoda and palpatine event, the raids and the arena (well okay, Boba is great in arena but the other guys aren't, except Vader whose ship is impossible to get)
I think you made some calculations but didn't take into account enough factors. If I followed your advice I'd have a fleet which wouldn't be good enough in fleet arena due to the absence of Vader who is paramount to Tarkin formations, no characters useful to unlock Yoda nor Palpatine (and we all know how good Palpatine is atm), no good characters for the mod challenges, so yeah I would have zetas but no one to put them on, which is kinda pointless.

Yeah, I've bought 4, unlocked my first Zeta Ability Mat Challenge on 29 December, and only got my 20th Zeta this past monday (6 Feb). So in 5.5 weeks, 20 mats. 4 purchased in fleet. Some people have stellar luck.

I'm thinking about trying Dooku in place of RG since he's so fast, has a stun/double stun in his special, and double attack basic for more TM removal.
