  • Who exactly was John Knox? In our last episode of the Reformation series, we look at the life of John Knox, the founder of the Presbyterian Church. Knox was born in Scotland and was an early convert to the protestant cause. However, as Mary of Guise ascended to the throne and as Knox aligned himself with the conspirators behind the murder of Cardinal Beaton, he was forced to flee in exile after imprisonment. In this video Mr. Mitchell acounts the significance of John Knox in England, Europe and then finally in his home of Scotland. Why exactly is John Knox the most well-known figure in Scottish Church History?
Whether you're Protestant, Catholic, Agnostic, Islamic, Jewish or Atheist - this part of history is essential for understanding the world we live in today.

I realize that this is a short overview of his life, but you skipped over the Scottish Parliament of 1560, which made Presbyterianism the Church of Scotland. That is a little like doing an over view of Thomas Jefferson, and not mentioning the Declaration of Independence.

True - there was so much to cover in such little time. Would have loved to flesh out the Scotts Confession more too!

John Knox actually helped created modern Scotland, not that catholic's of Irish origin in Scotland would understand that, The Church of Scotland insisted that every child in their respective parish received an education & that led to Scotland becoming the most literate nation in Europe & inadvertently played a part in the Scottish enlightenment though I doubt he'd approve. I am not a religious person, like most Scots of my age group I had a low key christian upbringing in the reformed church, the Presbyterian church & I for one am grateful for that.
