    Hey, don't blame English for "defenestrate/defenestration", we stole that word from Middle French _'défenestrer'_ 😜
    (Granted, in French it didn't specifically mean tossing _people_ out the window. But the only reason _we_ used it that context either was because a bunch of religious nuts in 1618 Prague were actually doing just that to their opposition & we needed a word to gossip about the scandal with 😉. It was too many words I suppose to say "they bounced the Bishop out the upstairs window" 😆)

    • @irov5884

    • @RagingGoblin
      @RagingGoblin Před rokem +4

      That thing in Prague wasn't really about 'religious' nutcases but about (violent) rebellion against religious oppression despite the oppressing sovereign being bound by royal decree to honour the freedom of religion.
      So ... while there certainly were religious nuts on both sides, it really was more of a political thing in the end.
      Note: despite being flung from a window and falling dozens of meters, all the people survived because they landed in a heap of trash.

    Fun fact: although Brits often ridicule Americans for using the term "soccer", the _English_ are the ones who invented the word. You see, the full name of soccer is "association football", as opposed to "rugby football" (rugby) and "gridiron football" (American football). So, in order to give soccer a short name like rugby has, the English took the "soc" from "association" and added the Oxford "-er". The major difference is that soccer became more popular than rugby in most English-speaking countries, while gridiron became more popular in the United States.

    Learning Spanish I came up with a theory about genders. If it has a hole in it, it is generally feminine. I mentioned this to our teacher and after thinking about it for a minute or so, he started laughing and figured I might be on to something lol. At least Spanish has a workable system for genders (with some exceptions). German OTOH - nope, you have to memorize the article with the noun.
    BTW, "soccer" is the original name for that sport. The US just didn't change from it like the rest of the world did (kinda like Imperial measurements versus metric).

      That's just makes a quite nice wordplay in Hungarian: fat seal = pufók fóka. You even can merge them playfully: pufóka what sounds cute and you could say that to a parent without offending them.
