  • Wow, this was at the TOP of my wants and I've finally gotten my own copy! No, this isn't Richard Barrett's group on Rama. Click this link to read an article on this record written by me: iestradasmhs19...
Unknown to most collectors, this record is a very beautiful cover of the 1955 hit single by Gene & Eunice. This single comes from San Antonio, TX - presumably from around 1964. The group sounds like a 2 part harmony backed by a strong Wind Section (comprised of Saxophones), and a marimba in the background. I’ve noticed a “swoosh” noise on the recording itself, as the vinyl is in immaculate condition. Theoretically, “This Is My Story” could have been pressed from a noisy dub. Notice too that this side - - the ballad is on the “B” side. My theory is that all copies of this sound marginal because it was dubbed from a noisy acetate; likely the group had already recorded this side at home, and went to record a “hit” side from the studio and used “This Is My Story” as the flip.

I am grateful for DooWops4Ever for making this apparent confusion clear (at least, for me). When I first saw the name of the group, of course my initial thought was that it must be THE Valentines of "Woo Woo Train," "Lily Maebelle" fame. But then as I listened further, I didn't hear the late Richard Barrett's notable lead voice or, for that matter, the distinctive sound of the Rama label's house band. Indeed, this record sounds nice but a bit amateurish. Well, no wonder. To add to the confusion, there is, on this thread, another video of this recording but this time accompanied with a grainy photo of the Rama records group. No doubt, there are listeners who believe that what they are hearing is a genuine recording of Richard Barrett and company. To top it all off, there were several groups sporting the "Valentines" moniker in the 1950s and '60s, making it nearly impossible for collectors to claim ownership of a hard-to-find Valentines recording without first having to clarify exactly what Valentines group they are talking about. Oh, well. What group harmony ensembles lacked in name originality was more than made up with memorable tunes that have tested the vicissitudes of time and a plethora of musical genres; they are still a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for your comment.

I had a very similar experience with a particularly rare record. It's an EP called Ring Them Bells For ALSAC by Dick Conti. I can't find any results for Dick Conti, this record, or his fanclub address which is on the back of the sleeve. I plan on uploading them today. It was given to me by my late great-grandpa.

My favorite doo wop is like the East LA style like Rosie and the Originals.. and that sort of doo wop style..Do you got any of the ladies singing that kind of style, can you post that up? I like this new one form 2018 by Thee Lakesiders called Parachute, some younger folks are keeping it going.

@@DooWops4Ever hey, I don’t mean to bother but do you know why they disbanded, if you want to call it that? Ik homie went on to be a marine and Xilali (sorry if I butchered or completely misspelled her name completely) isn’t doing much, why’s that? Ik they uploaded a record a few months ago, but I haven’t heard much from both of them yk, unless there’s some bts stuff then that’s understandable
