This is why xanatos is such a great villain: he has so much fun with it. He’s not crazy, he’s not even really evil, he’s just out for himself and looking to have a good time.

I love how, at the end of almost every episode where David Xanatos is the villain, the last lines boil down to Owen: "Your plan failed Sir" Xanatos: "Lol, NOPE"
He's brilliant and cool-headed. Failure doesn't seem to faze him, unlike Demona, lol. I'd say MacBeth would be my next favorite antagonist of the Gargoyles.

@@Elly3981 Most definitely, Xanatos and Macbeth are my two favorite Gargoyles Villains Xanatos I like because He's pretty much unshakable in any situation, also the fact that He aquires His wealth via a time paradox plus He's the ONLY Villain I know that can make a ponytail look so badass🤣, and Macbeth because you can tell He's not an Inherently Evil Man, and once you learn of His tragic past you understand why He's such a broken Man

We love other villains for being evil. But this guy...we love him for being fair and reasonable.

Even though he was a villain until the last few episodes, I could never bring myself to dislike him.

For the most part, he wasn't a villain -- he was an antagonist.
He called Goliath the greatest warrior alive it just shows how much Xanatos respects him.
He has robots & a suit of armor modeled after Goliath. Nuff said.

@@HalfCracker4life Yeah. And he created Thailog from Goliath instead of the other gargoyles. He just made the mistake of making Thailog too smart, smarter than even him. That was the first time I've ever seen Xanatos admit to making a mistake and regretting it. Even he was afraid of Thailog and that's saying something.

@@HalfCracker4life Yep. Thailog was intended to take Xanatos' place as the main antagonist and rival to Goliath in season 3. By then Xanatos had made peace with the gargoyles and became their benefactor as a reward of sorts for saving his son and the rest of humanity from the virus Demona had plan to unleash.

My favourite are 4 and 3. More for the Hudson quotes. "I've been alive for over 11 hundred years. Most of my clan is dead and dust. And I am a stranger in a strange land. Demona and Macbeth are immortal. Has it brought them happiness?"
"Evil" is a bit strong. The creator has always described him as "amoral."
Hes capable of evil but also of good, and it really just depends what benefits him at the moment. Personally I'd still call that evil overall lol

He's not evil at all. Just a regular rich man in a world where monsters exist. I always saw him as bored with regular life and was fascinated by the supernatural
He was responsible for Elisa's brother getting turn into a mutant gargoyle. That is pretty evil.

I think I like Xanatos because he’s not Your crazy laugh always angry villain. He rolls with the punches can admit he’s wrong, and honestly seems to have genuine respect for the Gargoyles.

Xanatos: Ehh what the hell, i didn't get what wanted but i got something better instead.
There was only one time in this show when Xanatos truly lost his shit & acted out of rage and fear. He could keep himself distracted from contemplating Fox’s death under the influence of the Eye of Odin by focusing on the next plan to save her. But when Oberon came for his son & he couldn’t bargain, threaten, reason, or shoot his way out of the situation, he lost control of his emotions & just tried to beat the snot out of Oberon with his bare fists. No martial arts, just charging & roaring like a cranky Goliath.
But that that didn’t ruin his magnificent bastard status besides he got his son back right ?

that first moment not only shows you xanatos' character but how much he values owen. he lost to him and instead of being mad, he's proud of him. and then he gets angry when owen suggests that he should've thrown the spar.
xanatos would rather have a capable side-kick than a brown nosing toadie.

Xanatos wasn't exactly evil. There are lines even he won't cross, unlike Demona. He is brilliant, though and I loved the way Johnathan Frakes brought him to life. I also thought it was brilliant how Xanatos was given the first name David, after the ancient Hebrew King who was rival to the Biblical Goliath to parallel his rivalry with the gargoyle Goliath. He was even designed to look like Johnathan Frakes too, another Easter egg!

He won't kill. He won't break a law that he can get caught for. He has a charitable side. All in all he is a man who likes the trappings of wealth and power, just to feel secure. But deep down he fears dying of old age. Because he was traumatized by his mother's death as a child.
One of the few true villains who lived up to the master strategist title.
Xanatos turns any failure into a win just by the way he looks at it.

I never really viewed Xanatos as a villain, but more as a rival or a wild card. Certainly a great character.
Interestingly enough, his first name was David, same as the Hebrew king in the the Bible who was rival to the Biblical Goliath except their roles were reversed.

An evil Tony Stark would be like Lex Luthor or even Dr. Doom. Xanatos isn't as iconic, but he's far more than just that. He always has his own sinister agenda, but he's still a highly honorable man. Too bad he went all "boring hero" on us after the Manhattan clan saved his son. But he has the perfect voice actor (in fact much of the cast from Star Trek did phenomenal voice overs for this great cartoon).
That was part of 'The Goliath Chronicles', which the original writers had very little input on. Everything but the first episode of that season dropped into cliques and shallow story telling.
that apart from The Journey was non canon if you want a canon continuation get the Clan-Building Gargoyle trades vol 1-2 you get to see Xanatos as both benefactor and for to The Gargoyles as Hudson Lexington Macbeth The London Gargoyles Clan and King Arthur protect The Stone of Destiny from him Coyote 5.0 Coldsteel as well as The Steel & Iron Clan

Only in season 3, which the creator Greg Weisman wasn't involved in its plot. If you look at the comic and Greg's future plan, Xanatos has plenty up his sleeves.

I know these lists are subjective but you missed in my opinion one of his best moments.
After orchestrating a prison break/confrontation with the gargoyles his robot winds up coming up short in the conflict.
But none of that even matters because the whole point was to make Fox look good during the prison break by refusing to escape and net her an early, 100% legal parole.
When she asks him what about his revenge, he replies simply, “Revenge is a sucker’s game.”
Moments like this are what made Xanatos suck a standout antagonist. He was charismatic, pragmatic and wickedly sharp. Every plan he made he ensured that when it lose, he would always get something of value. He had a code but everything he did was a calculated move in furthering his own goals. He was nobody’s fool.
No wonder he’s the trope codifier for the magnificent bastard.

I think Gargoyles is more suited for an older audience like young teens to adults. There were a couple of scenes I didn't think was suitable for children.

Xanatos vs Lex Luthor
Xanatos hands down. While Lex is smarter and better scientist, Xanatos doesn't have Lex's most overwhelming flaw and weakness his ego and Xanatos is just better planner, heck even when Xanatos loses he usually gains nearly as much as his enemies how beat him or sometime more.

I never understood why this guy was considered a villain, what he did to Derek was cruel, but that was the only real bad thing he had done in the whole show.
It was but as a result, Derek was able to do things he couldn't do as a normal human. He gained strengthen and reflexes, speed, etc that rivaled the gargoyles themselves.
Don't forget giving Demona access to pack media studios. Although he had truly no idea what Demona had in mind....he still should have been on his guard.
He tried to kill the gargoyles with his first batch of steel clan robots, also created both Thailog and Coldstone (the latter being especially cruel with the cybernetics and multiple personalities) to defeat the gargoyles, tried to capture one of the Loch Ness monsters, used The Pack against the gargoyles at least twice, capturing Coyote hoping to make himself immortal...Xanatos has quite the rap sheet.

Gotta love #1 moment. I don't think that was his top moment though -- that honor belongs to when he went up against Oberon, knowing that he had absolute no chance, all to protect his son, esp when Oberon dusted all his weapons, so David did a jump kick on him. Close #2 is when Fox asked why David isn't getting revenge on the Gargoyles, and David replied, "it's such a waste, and revenge is so beneath me." And it turned out he was right, because Gargoyles did so much for David (mostly unknowingly to the gargoyles), and David was able to find true happiness because he didn't resort to stupidity like revenge.
He says, "revenge as they say is a sucker's game."

Is Xanatos a villain? I don't think he is, even from the start, because he would never harm the city (in fact, he would go out of his way to protect the city). He is an antagonist (someone who stands in the way of the protagonists).

Sorry, but Tony Stark is nothing but a sick, egomanical jerk. No honor, always about himself. Xanatos is a tactical genius, oh, for sure egoistical, but he knows that. He made mistakes and has no shame to admit it. But what did he say? "Always the ability to change if and when necessary." When Alex was born, Xanatos changed - still dangerous for all his enemies, but he would die for the ones he truly loves. And from that time on a defender and true friends of the Clan. A believable, yet underestimated villain.
