    I love this show. Hope there will be more. Apparently he's a supplier of "things" to Madonna, Elton John, the Beckhams and his biggest client is Mick Jagger. He comes in 4 or 5 times a year to shop for jewels. He threw out Freddie Mercury thinking he was a robber. Apparently he was in his leather drag and there had been some robberies in the area. Well after receiving irate call from reps of the band Queen, he opened the door. Mercury purchased over 40,000.00 in Lalique but refused to interact with Watson. Gotta love these ridiculous people and that Anita takes the cake. You were conned into buying those sneakers. Thanks for the post.

  • @forget3817
    @forget3817 Před 5 lety +107

    Why do I feel sorry for Gordon in every episode? It has to do with the snobbish hierarchy in the art world, the need to kowtow to clients and even artists only to be dismissed by people like the director of the Tate. It also has to do with Gordon's physical condition, the sweating, the unbalanced walk, the fatigue with every exertion, the overheating. These shows are a glimpse into the contemporary art world, which is always a risky business as I doubt most of the things in Anita's gallery will stand the test of time if they're not already obsolete, and Colbert's chairs are neither original nor precious (DIY'd by Home Depot fans everywhere).

      My theory is when there is something like a pair of shoes or something ridiculously simple that it is actually a front for some nefarious money changing amongst the elite. For instance it looks weird for a billionaire to just give another billionaire millions of dollars but if they throw in a pair of sneakers that they call art it becomes "accepted". I think they use Gordon as front to add validity to the scam, spend a few thousand getting a stash of speculative modern art then have the stash to be able to sell to other billionaires when a favor exchange arises.

    I love this comedy - it's genius. No canned laughter and a documentary style as if it's in the real world with real interviews with artists etc. Some of them aren't even sure if he's for real.
    Gordon is such a well painted character - from the small reveals into his mercantile motivations he thinks are so charming, to the total lack of any stratagem and randomness of his actions.. it's sort of genius writing to make the comedy so subtle.
    His introspections, the authoritative narrated voice and the random people included for the obligatory vox populi also just add to the feel that it's a sort of larger than life greasy but largely harmless salesmen character he's floating in a noir world based on our contemporary reality.
    A dark comedy that holds a mirror to contemporary society and the vanity/"fake it till you make it" sub-culture in a subtle style that could almost be reality. Well done to the BBC for airing/producing this comedy classic.

    i actually enjoyed this
    Reminds me of the complexity of the home, and quite often I'll have the chance to catch up with that person that is hard to please or even get to open up.
    I have a partner, but Anita is a truly wonderful woman. I couldn't see things less important if she were around.

    for those not familiar with the "art" world .. Of course the prices are ridiculous but as she is now a famous collector, the value of her pieces is most probably soaring so later she should be able to sell them at a much higher price or maybe she cut a deal with the "artist" and get a cut we s/he sells something else at the new price level.

      When one is as *obese* as he is, it is inevitable ; plus, he's got bad knees, and a bad back ( _which stem from his obesity_ ) and he is always in pain - which causes him to sweat.
      He needs to eliminate all of that _rich fatty food_ he stuffs his face with and stick to vegetables + salads.

    My take: He’s got to stop being crass and taking shortcuts in his communication with clients. His personality is lovely when it is authentic and self deprecating. The sales stick is too obvious. Instead he needs to be more authentic. For example, with Anita he could’ve said, “Anita, I’ve got an idea. Why not consider this room (the cafe) the gift wrapping around a package. The beauty of the space will enhance the appeal of (value added to) the interior.”
