Roland have recently upgraded their Cube range of combo amplifiers, the new generation of cubes have several new features such as new effects whilst the higher end models also have amp modeling and a phrase looper. Let's look at the third of the 4 models available which is the Roland 40XL ....
The CUBE 40XL offers 40 watts of power through an 10" high-performance custom designed speaker, there are discrete footswitchable channels via the optional Boss FS series footwsitches, JC Clean and Lead channels with Solo modes for each. Ten COSM amp models are provided, including the new Extreme and there are 8 effects on-board, including Heavy Octave, COSM vintage Spring Reverb, and Power Squeezer for full gain at low volume. An Aux Input allows portable music players to be connected for jam-along fun, whilst the cherry on the cake is an 80- second phrase looper.
As stated earlier, should you wish to you can connect a portable music player such as an MP3 or iPod to the Aux-In jack and jam along with your favourite songs, there's also a direct recording out and a headphone socket for silent practice. Considering the diminuative size of this unit Roland have packed an enormous amount of features into a small, easily transportable package - Check out the Cube 40XL now at the Nevada Music Warehouse.

I was going to buy a Line 6 Spider IV 40, after watching this video then I finally bought the Cube 40 XL. That's 5 years ago. I'm still impressed with this little amp
Hui San I had the XL and I have now have a 40gx. It's done me well over the 3 or so years I've had it. Looking to upgrade my amp soon, as I want to try something different, but yeah, these amps are good.

I always love watching Alex play.. How he extracts such amazing sounds with those fingers is crazy. also his phrasing is perfect... everything about his playing is just so good.

I played one of these amps in the shop, and I was stunned (as a tube snob) how awesome the tones are....simply amazing now! I was also finding myself questioning the need for very expensive tube amps...they were a sad revelation!
They do produce some great tones!

Great demo. Alex is the best player I've heard on hundreds, maybe thousands of demo videos. Wish I could work with him. I have a Roland Cube 30, and will consider this 40. Also, I'm most impressed with the UK music stores, they know how to demo products properly.

@camlpg Thats Alex'x Musicman, I think It was a normal 5 way switch. No other pedals used in the in the video other than FS6 channel switches. A synth would need a hex pickup and a big RRC cable anyway. The in the video the amp was simply mic'd with a SM57 and mixed to the backing track, although Alex's fingers are amazing ...

Great playing - love those Benson licks in there. Properly tasteful too rather than just shredding - great job. Cubes are great amps - owned a 60 which I managed to blow up letting a bass player use it! Would by another in a heartbeat.

I've bought the cube 40xl 2 days ago. Its a very nice amp. Very good chorus, nice reverb, you can make many sounds with it, the loop is very handy for practicing your skills. From the bluesy clean sound to the heavy metal extreme sound by roland. I really recommend it!

Bravissimo!. I salute you sir....many times over. Superb demo of an inexpensive amp. No talentless hack playing distorted blues licks on a $5K amp with some godawful pedal masking the amp's natural tone. Great playing and well recorded..... There is no substitute for ability, imagination and talent
Beautifull song (1st one) and skilled playing throughout... I sure hope I can play like that some day. I think I am getting the cube 40 for my new les paul supreme knock off. I can't wait!

My goodness! A visit to the "chops" shop. Damn fine playing and a fantastic sounding amp. It really is amazing how much good equipment is coming out with advances in amp technology. Recently I was listening to a demo of the Fender Supersonic Twin and was blown away. I heard the Mustangs and was blown away and now the Roland. I already have 5 (vintage) amps. I think I should just stay away. These companies are set to vacuum out my bank account.

@nbl23 If you mean the FS6 pedal them you'll need either a stereo to stereo lead or a lead with 2 mono jacks one and and a stereo jack the other as the Cube 40XL has stereo jack footswitch inputs.

Amazing demo Alex and you can play a lot of different styles so well. So so much better than the noise from andertons constant attack on my ear drums. All you need is some good old American country licks and you will corner the market.

I have an older 30W and 80W. Both are great. The little one has been dropped and rained on (yes, it's true and I'm not proud of it), and it still works great. I replaced the speaker with a Jensen after a bass player blew out the old one. (I'm not normally an amp abuser.) I treasure these amps for their clean sound (JC Channel). The Tweed amp setting is great for blues. Obviously, highly reliable. And Alex Hutchings is terrific. Watch just to hear him play.
Bought a 40XL on the back of this video and online reviews. Very pleased, great mix of amp and pedal sounds, and very loud. But the 'Power Squeezer' pulls down the output for bedroom use. Just got a little MP3 player for backing tracks and plan to get a bunch of footswitches from Thomann. Overall a good buy!

@Reaper12894 Hey man- I just made a dual footswitch like the boss fs-6 for a cube 80x, it still doesn't work great with the delay/looper but it works perfectly with the channel switching and solo option. The trick is having a stereo cable connecting the amp to the footswitch. To tell the difference look at the plug of a regular cable (mono) and the plug of a stereo cable. The stereo plug has an extra line on the smooth part which enables both pedals to work. Hope this helps

@Reaper12894 I bought the Roland Cube 80XL and I love it! Its way better than the 40 XL and I was in the same situation you are in-which one to get(since they are both good). Besides the obvious power difference the 80 has more features....First of all it has a 12 inch speaker compared to the 10 inch one in the 40xl so you will have more bottom end. The 80xl also has an extension speaker jack so you could hook it up to a bigger cabinet if you wanted(that is nice but no need for it yet)....
@squidskunk Nope just an SM57, Alex's Musicman has that hi fidelity sound. Cube amps do have a fair bit of sparkle on the clean channels.
@ammar828 It doesn't come with a footswitch, but you can connect up to three double footswitches

@SpardaKnight2 You can use the Boss FS6 twin pedal or the single FS5 pedals as well as other brands too. Check our website for current prices.

Are these still being manufactured in 2021? I just ordered a Roland Mini Cube GX, but I would have loved one of these too. I don't know what it is, Roland makes wonderful stuff,
but they seem to have a marketing/branding handicap in America. Their stuff tends to be hard to find, or they discontinue things too fast, and they aren't selling product like they could
be. I don't understand it. I wish Roland would diversify and put out a whole range of similar amps, including a cheaper "Blues Cube", that would compete with Boss Katana,
though I know the two companies are related, etc.

is this thing loud? for band practice, my lead player has a line 6 spider 4 30w and its not loud, is this louder?
@wsonu578 so it only gives low volume in when turned to lead? i think it is a technical problem. maybe you have to go back to the store and ask them. coz that isnt normal. maybe it is just a loose wire or something like that. hope that helped
