    Kurt Vonnegut was a great writer and human being. The world could use a lot more of people like him. The decency in his heart which he squeezes out between bouts of wry humor and biting intellect make him a hero to me. I contribute much of my conscience to this man.

    I saw Salman Rushdie speak at a university in 2006 or so. He used the phrase "When the excrement hits the ventilation duct" and it got big laughs. Shoulda known Kurt said it first because Kurt said everything first. Love that man.

    Kurt was able to see through the SDI ruse, but the Soviets were taken in by it.
    What Kurt misses was that the ruse of SDI caused the Soviets to spend capital that they didn't have to counter a fake weapons program.

      No, the main drivers aren’t there but when looked back upon it will be something unique to this age, painted using historical brushes but with modern paints. The closest I can come is they we have entered a “Corporate Republic” phase.
      We need to throughly dissect and evaluate the first 2 decades of the 21st century, the influence 9-11 had on the world, and specifically the US, was as profound as any other major historical event. Was it more profound than, say, WW1? I’m not sure, but it should be considered. If one is to ask the Weimar question then WW1 must be compared to as it was the major driver.
      So, have we entered a phase similar? I don’t believe so, I believe it is something uniquely different, yet the same in some ways, as other periods in history. The real question is “how will it end”.

      Excellent observations.
      So much has changed since February.
      NATO, Europe and the US have responded as one against Russian aggression. Germany had chosen to seriously muscle up. Russia is militarily and economically crippled for a generation. Need for CANZUK is agreed by most as a must. China feels unanchored to Western Markets.
      Provided Putin doesn’t use tactical nukes, this will be viewed as confirmation of the Second American century. Let’s hope we lead with humbleness and humility in order to keep NATO United.

    SDI was a political tactic to bring the Russians to heel. And it worked. What finally forced Gorbachev to capitulate was What Reagan said to him in their final nuclear arms talks meeting for which Gorbachev confirmed, Reagan said that he would build SDI no matter the cost and when completed would share technology with every country on earth, friend or foe, making these weapons completely obsolete.

    Most of this comment section can take a flying fuck at a doughnut, a flying fuck at the moon, one of the first things he said was short term thinking and all of you focused on the beginning of the video because you feel implicated by linking economic collapse to political turbulence and scapegoating. This was 1987 and based on the values held by the majority of careerist politicians, including the one you are playing devils advocate and vicarious victim for.
    If you can read Vonnegut and support the current cruel circus you must have missed something along the way. Vonnegut was an avowed believer in social democracy.
    He also said this;
    "A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved. Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons."
