Do you have any questions about the two different homeschool tests I showed? Do you use a different test?
We do two forms of standardized tests every year: the MAP tests (we do all 4-- ELA, Language, Math, and Science); and the Woodcock Johnson Academic Achievement test (done live over Zoom with a certified interviewer/proctor). They measure slightly different things in sightly different ways, and the WJ measures things like humanities/social studies knowledge. The two tests together give me a great view of what they are getting well and what the might be missing.
Thanks for sharing ❤️
You may have seen differences in grade levels and ease of test taking because the CAT uses norms from 1970/80 and the MAP test uses norms from 2020.
Ah! Great info- thanks for sharing ❤️ no idea the CAT test was so outdated with norms 😵💫
I think its is mainly Christian liberty that uses the 70s one. They have a whole page discussing " Why Does Christian Liberty Still Use The 1970 Edition Of The California Achievement Test (CAT)?" They believe it is harder than the current ones. So after some digging, the CAT has been changed to TerraNova in 1996. Confusing! There needs to be some good clarification on these testing sites.
We have to take a test every year. That is one of the laws here in NC
I live in NC too and it’s just one exam each calendar year from the time of intent to enroll (age 7) until graduation (what ever age). We get to choose our exams as long as it tests reading, writing, math & spelling.
@@nickys6656 I know so simple. My daughters just took the MAP test last month and it is way better than the CAT test. I would check it out. Good luck.
We take the CAT every year because we are required to. We hate it! They don't show growth from year to year. My kids always get the highest scores possible. I don't find this test helpful, but our state requires it.
I found that the CAT was too easy for my child.
This was my first year officially homeschooling my oldest (1st grade). I like the idea of testing at the beginning and end of the year to see progress. Are all the tests pegged to a particular grade level? My daughter is ahead at math and behind at writing and spelling. I think if I test her at grade level, it might not be a good fit. Any advice for kids ahead or behind at some subjects?
The MAP is great for this because it’s adaptive and adjusts regardless of grade level
Thank you for sharing, I was wondering if they keep this records even if let’s say the child goes back in the school system, would the school be able to see previous testing or only you as the parent have this access and if they would be to take a test in school in the future previous records will not show unless u provide it? And I was wondering what if they don’t pass the test or score low, would this results stay there or you r able to retake it? We have never took standardized tests so was wondering what if it’s overwhelming and they just don’t do as good only because of unfamiliarity with this sort of testing and than that records r carried even if they go back to school at some point.
The website I use is specifically For parents so it would not transfer to a school . The test isn’t a pass or fail it’s just to show you where they are at. There are some practice tests I would recommend.
I saw the CAT begins at second grade. What do you think is a good age to begin testing? Are some tests better for younger kids?
I think 2nd grade is a good age, my girls started in kindergarten because that was what their school was doing. I probably won’t test my son until 2nd grade. The MAP reads the questions out loud for younger grades too.
Does NWEA allow non-U.S. residents to partake their test? We live in Canada and we are considering this. Thank you!
I would check out the website! I’m not sure
No, It don't show growth at all from previous years of the CAT Test. We are switching this year to homeschoolboss. My girls don't like the CAT test at all. We have done it the last 3 - 4 years.
When taking the map growth testing do I schedule her for 4th grade (currently finishing) or 5th grade as that is what grade she will be entering in the fall?
You would do spring 4th grade ❤️
@@gatheredandgroundedhomeschool thank you!!
What age do you start testing?
My two oldest were in public school previously and they started testing them in Kindergarten- I probably won’t test my youngest until 1st or 2nd grade - the MAP test adapts for younger students and will read them the questions.
One time test per year or should I get a subscription?
It’s up to you, I’ve always just purchased the stand alone test never subscribed but we only test once a year now
@@gatheredandgroundedhomeschool thank you so much. Super helpful!! I’m in California and while we do our state testing there aren’t actually helpful. So I want to start testing on my own just to monitor our growth. ❤️❤️
