@ginovanderweijden6839 Anything can be uneconomical if you drive it hard like a f*** head. Not only that, but you just put unnecessary wear on the engine. I have so far moved on to an e200 kompressor, which has LPG. I can get 650-700 mile rang on 116 bucks compared to 400 miles for 110. Half my range on petrol. So, it's pretty economical. Not to mention how comfortable it is to drive. 🙂

My wife talks about the $$ it will cost in future but if you have a passion for something you will put money into it. I bought it for $12k AUD - it was A$130k new so less than a tenth of its new value. A lot of people don't get it but for those of us who have this love for these cars, you know what I'm talking about. I had the seal problem which cost $$ as it sat barely used for 18 years but I love it. Thanks for the video Clint and best of luck with it. I hope you get a lot of joy from it.

Sorry for absurdly late reply. Google is a scumbag! The facelift ones came out in 2004. New bumpers, new lights, more modern look, new modern interior, more power, fiber optics in multimedia system, round dials, all of the pre-facelift issues resolved.
Pre-facelift ones rusted, the valeo radiators on the automatic would leak coolant into the hydraulic oil, leading to gearbox failure. Head gasket oil leak into engine wiring loom and solenoids, leading to ECU and MAF sensor damage. Bad SAMs. All kinds of electrical problems, replacement SAM required. Balancing shaft would crack. All of these issues were resolved with the facelift. Always buy a facelift Mercedes!

Hindsight is always 20/20. There's absolutely no way in 2001 the Hamster or anyone else could've known the cost-cutting regime (and dodgy suppliers) would result in such a drop in quality and reliability. Up until 1990s Mercedes constantly topped reliability and customer satisfaction surveys, so history back then dictated any Mercedes was built to last for decades, and that's no overhype.

    • @the8419

When this was filmed, the w203 obviously just came out. They were junk up until the facelift in 2005. They introduced the m272 engine and both the interior and exterior were much improved. reliability improved a lot. ALMOST EVERY INTERIOR MATERIAL USED WAS SOFT TOUCH IN THE FACELIFT W203. It actually feels better built than the w204, which felt very cheap before the 2012 facelift. The w204 just doesn't have the"Benz feel" although it's probably more durable and reliable than its predecessors.

Well, i have the same one like this, but it's 2002, so it has 1.8l 163hp 230Nm engine. Not slow, but fuel consumption is kind of negative thing.

Can't believe that 220 is a better-seller. It has an asthmatic engine and that's why it is cheap. This does not make it better than V6 of the same year. So don't judge by price, judge by comfort and joy.

Pre-facelift maybe. After 2004 definitely not, there are still many modells from the very early 2000's that are in a very good condition today. And the whole W203 generation has statistically a better reliability then the average year by year in Germany.
