    I just tried this with a half and half mix of corian and graphite dust. Very strong and nice and smooth.

    Just tried this for the first time and worked perfectly. Under a minute video, yet everything you need to know. You're the boss, dude! I'm in the middle of working on my two identical 12 string guitars, converting one to a 7 string, and the other will make the courses very tight together as the factory set up is terrible. Using your two videos on the subject has helped and inspired me, especially the formula for nut spacing. It's a lot harder than you make it look. Brilliant work, keep on keeping on, brother!

    Was considering going through the trouble of getting a new nut because I wanna try thinner strings , and this may have saved a lot of money and trouble. Thanks

    Do bakin soda works the same as the nut-same-material dust?

    • @guitar_md
      @guitar_md  Před 2 měsíci +2

      My favorite is the nut repair powder from Music City Bridge. I use that exclusively these days. You can get black, white, cream, or all three.
      I have used bone dust many times and have a jar of that as well. But these days, just the Music City Bridge stuff, whether I'm filling plastic or bone.
      Baking soda and superglue will work well. Bone dust too. But I like that the Music City Bridge stuff best. I think it has Teflon or graphite in it to help reduce friction, which helps with tuning and to prevent wearing of the slot over time.
      The three colors will match any nut. My favorite stuff by far.
      Nut same material will work for bone. Never tried it with plastic or any other material. Worth a try though if you want to sand a nut down and use the powder though, nothing bad will happen. Long as you have nut slots to recut it in case anything goes wrong

    What's the best set of files, though?

    • @guitar_md
      @guitar_md  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I personally use the Stewmac nut slotting files. I don't have any experience with other brands so I can't say, but Music Nomad gets very high ratings and many people, even professionals, use them.

      @@guitar_md I'm having trouble with the highest string's slot. Not sure how to pack bone dust into that tiny space.

    • @guitar_md
      @guitar_md  Před 6 měsíci

      @@RideAcrossTheRiver Pour a small pile of dust over the top of the slot, then rub back and forth over the slot a couple times with your finger. Then you can hold your finger over the slot and blow away any excess.
      The rubbing back and forth over the slot a couple times should cause the slot to completely fill with dust. I may make an updated version of this video to include that. It's a subtle difference but I've done this on the thinner nut slots for many years without even thinking about it. You can use a toothpick or another tool if you want to rub over the top of the slot but just a finger will work.
      It isn't packing the slot, but letting the dust merely fall into the slot. The surface area of the pile of dust can be too great and it can just hover above the slot instead of falling in. Rubbing over the top of it will work -- let me know how it goes or if you have any issues.

      @@guitar_md Is it always thin CA? Would thicker CA be better for a thin slot? Also, where do you get the dust?

    • @guitar_md
      @guitar_md  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @RideAcrossTheRiver Always thin CA. Thick CA has no capillary action so it will just sit on top of the dust and make a mess instead of wicking into the dust and hardening it.
      For the dust, you can just use regular supermarket baking soda. If you want something higher quality I recommend the nut filler dust from Music City Bridge. A 3 pack with black, cream and white powder will last a very long time and is of great quality. That's the stuff I've been using these days.
