I've witnessed overlap throughout various places here in the Tri-State Area while growing-up. 10 years ago, in my late mid-teens, I really started taking notice of ShopRites and Stop & Shops that sold both of them throughout various towns & cities in the CT parts of Greater New York, and instantly remembered an instance or two of seeing them in the A&P while growing up in Downstate N.Y. I've even seen them in the same side-case=between-isles before, but usually Dryer's is located separate, in a smaller (between-aisle case).

Prior to my current job, I was the customer service trainer for Nestle confections, baking, beverage and ice cream brand ambassadors (the folks who answer your phone calls and respond to your letters, emails and social media posts when you contact the company). This video is very well done.
A few more fun facts for you: not only was the Dreyer's brand responsible for the creation of Rocky Road (always with chopped marshmallows - marshmallow creme is not real Rocky Road), but they also invented Cookies & Cream. It was first created by the Dreyer's official taste tester, John Harrison, whose taste buds were insured by the company for a million dollars.
Also, when Nestle took full ownership of Dreyer's, they also acquired Edy's/Dreyer's Fruit Bars (now Outshine), Skinny Cow and the licence to produce and distribute Haagen Dazs in the United States and Canada for the rest of this century. Speaking of which, if you think William Dreyer has an interesting back story, you've got to do a video on Reuben and Rose Mattus. Reuben is the Steve Jobs of ice cream.

That's pretty much it. The rebranding of Edy's on the west coast was basically a concession made to Breyer's, who only had an East Coast presence when the Dreyer's direct store delivery fleet started moving the product beyond the Rockies. Then, Breyer's moved their product to the West Coast and suddenly didn't think the brand name similarities would be confusing. Go figure.

In WA, we have Dreyer's. I learned of the Edy's name when I saw a Dreyer's commercial that showed the Edy's name for a couple of frames at the beginning. Wondering why that happened, I googled "Edy's" and learned that there were two different names.
We also have Breyers in WA, too. Looked it up and apparently they started in the east and moved westward, and for some reason didn't have to change their name they way that Dreyer's. Breyers used to be known for using all natural ingredients before being bought by Unilever, who cut costs and turned it into crap that can't even be legally called "ice cream" anymore.

Here in Washington we call it Dreyers but I remember that their were these fruit bar ice cream bars that had the brand name Edy's? The fruitbars are now gone and looks like they are owned by outshine, and the ice cream remains as Breyers. I hope someone here also remembers these Fruit bars.

Another Silicon Valley person checking in. I've only ever seen Dreyer's in stores, but my parents both grew up in the northeast. So I knew about the existence of Edy's, but previously had no idea why they were differentiated like that.

Wait, so Edy started in Montana and yet it's sold as Dryer's in Montana and Dryer started in NY and it's sold as Edy's there? That's not weird or confusing at all.

Edy's didn't start as ice cream in Montana, was into candy (like See's)...

I knew about this because I used to hang out at Edy’s in Berkeley and they only served Dreyer’s. I then visited the factory at Grand and that’s when I learned a little bit more. I miss that Edy’s.

I’m from Los Angeles, and other than a map from Knott’s Berry Farm, I didn’t know what Edy’s was, and when I saw it, I thought it was a no-namer stealing the Dreyer’s logo
