  • Smallcleugh Mine located in Cumbria U.K. started in around 1770, looking for the continuation of Hanginshaw's West of Nent Vein, but this was soon abandoned. In 1787 the work was restarted by an agent for the London Lead Company along the Smallcleugh Cross Vein which produced an immense quantity of ore. There where also many other rich veins worked from Smallcleugh - Middlecleugh (and 1st and 2nd Sun Veins), Longcleugh, and Great Cross. The mine over the years was also worked by the Nenthead and Tynedale Lead and Zinc Company and Vieille Montagne Zinc Company. Most of the operations in Smallcleugh had come to an end around the 1900's. In 1963 the mine was briefly reopened in pursuit of new ore reserves, but little large scale mining took place.

    I've been there 30-40 times but just noticed a feature in your video I've never noticed before, I shall have to examine closer ;) Ahh, you stood on the exploded cart but didn't notice it ;) Yep, you think it's warm in the drifts, go into those flats, I was sweating buckets last time, really uncomfortable. We need another trip, That one with the rails over is a future explore, level goes a very long way but apparently many collapses. Yep, as far as I'm aware, the hoppers in the dry section are original. I have muuuuuuuuuuch more to show you but will be a full day trip even just for the basics :)

    When I used to frequent that mine there used to be a low crawl supported by scaffold that - If I remember rightly-lead to an underground chapel. The last time I was there, back in the 80s, that crawl had collapsed. It’s a long time ago so maybe I’m remembering it incorrectly, but I wondered if you could still reach that chapel ?

      No we couldn’t reach the Chaple but would be interesting to find the low crawl you refer to and dig it out !

      @@UndergroundExplorerUK Once it had caved in there was no real sign there had ever been a crawl. I’m guessing the chapel is marked on the survey if you can get a copy. I think the crawl dropped into one end of the Chapel and it was probably about 20 or 30 foot flat out.

    Do you need permission to go into these places?

    • @UndergroundExplorerUK
      @UndergroundExplorerUK  Před 2 lety +1

      Most mines we explore we didn’t need permission
