Unfortunately as they speak about in the film. The kids don't remember. The maids speak about the fact that the kids they love and care for as their own, grow up to be their bosses and treat them as badly as their parents once did.
Yup. Those kids are all sweet until society gets ahold of them. You think that mama wasn’t a kind and loving child to HER maid? Now she’s an awful harpy.

@kristy5698 The book (and film) is based on personal and true experiences. In both the book and film, the maids complain that the children they once loved and cherished, the kids that showed love back, grew up and became their bosses and treated them like trash. Yes, perhaps in other contexts kids remember good experiences and nurture, but in THIS context, apart from the main character (I forget her name. Skeeter i think?) who loved her maid as an adult (and was devastated by her death), and I'm not even sure if the main character was actually fiction or not and added in for entertainment value, but in general, the children didn't seem to remember all that love when they became adults, from the maid's experiences. Unfortunately teaching hate within family and society over powers everything.
@kimcreatesstuff Exactly. I think that's actually one of the most important features of the book and this part of history. These women put their all into loving The white children and in return they were treated like absolute trash. It's a fantasy to pretend that the kids grew up, remembered that love and fought for those women and their rights. We literally KNOW that didn't happen. If they remembered how well they were treated, rights for Black women in America would have came FAR sooner. Yet they didn't.
This was heart wrenching, because that little girl wouldn't use the potty. She was still running around in diapers, and driving her mama crazy. She was having a hard time with potty training. The first time she uses the potty properly, its one of these in her mamas front yard. Now that her mama humiliated her by yelling at her, and spanking her for finally using the potty, imagine the trauma and embarrassment she will have going to the bathroom from now on. Viola, the hired help, tries to reassure the little girl, but her mama is so stuck up that she soon fires viola, and her little girl loses the onlt person that cares about her. This was a great movie. Right up there with Fried Green Tomatoes.
Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my favorite movies. I've seen it six times, and cried at the end all six of them. "The secret's in the sauce" was a catch phrase for the longest time in the 90's. I haven't seen "The Help" yet because I wanted to hear the audiobook first. It's on my "one of these days" list. 🙄
It’s a shame that the helpers knew the kids better than their own parents n it still happens today with the nannies knowing the kids they watch better than the kids parents.

This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen! The struggle, the fight these women have to go through to be heard and a masterful ending. Highly recommend.
The child is doing what a child deems is fit: potting on a toilet. She doesn’t understand the context or “perceived dangers/diseases”. And, Mar Mobley was grossly neglected by her mom. She likely sought attention + affection for showing independence for going potty. It’s sad. The mom didn’t discern this in the moment and exposed Mobley to further abuse. Clearly, Viola’s character was compelled to edify her child despite her experience.
It’s one thing to hit a child for no reason like that, but humiliating the poor child the way she did is another thing entirely; her mother ought to be ashamed of herself acting like that
Well, she kind of is. She knew her own child preferred abilene and that she wasn't up to having another kid, and she was embarrassed and panicked for what she really believed about toilets. I doubt anyone was kind to her when she was a toddler, she just kept repeating a sad sad cycle.
The lady had used toilets dumped in her yard and the people/paps were out there taking pictures. The kid just happened to go potty at an unfortunate time.
