  • Elgar's "Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and String Orchestra" is played in this video by the Royal Philharmonic orchestra, conducted by Barry Wordsworth in what I personally think is a scintillating performance.
The film clips are from Ken Russell's "Elgar", made in 1962.
They portray Elgar at various stages of his life :-
As a child, riding his horse, fishing and playing with his dog,
as a young man courting his future wife, Caroline Alice Roberts,
as a man, cycling and walking and throwing sticks on a fire in the woods,
as a father flying a kite and tobogganing downhill with his daughter
and as a widower driving through the Malvern Hills with his dogs.
The image at around 10.25 is that of his wife Alice.

Her loss is deeply felt in so many parts of the world Jamie. History will remember her as a queen of exceptional dignity, grace, reach and, above all, humanity.

Watched Ken Russell’s film for the first time yesterday evening after watching Elgar’s cello concerto being played brilliantly at The Proms on TV. For an Englishman who, in 1962 would have been about the same age as the young EE cantering along the Malvern Hills on his white pony this film - and your compilation of scenes from it - is pure, overwhelming, nostalgia. Everything comes together perfectly to create this feeling: the subject and his inspiring story, the scintillating yearning of the music, the cinematography of the rural settings of an England of my childhood now almost completely gone and the loving way in which Russell told the simple story in dreamlike mono colour. I realise I’ve drifted off into an appreciation of the film itself but it seems like I just had to get that off my chest. So thank you David for allowing me to revisit that wonderful experience through your excellent compilation here on CZcams. I’m sure I’ll be back again when I feel a need to refresh my sense of ‘quintessential Englishness’.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video David. It was Ken Russell's film, its combination of music and imagery, that first stirred my interest in classical music when I was a young boy back in the 60s. To this day certain scenes from it have never left me.

And whilst I only watched the film for the first time two days ago it evoked a powerful feeling of nostalgia that left me with the impression that I too had watched it first as a boy (but had forgotten the event).
I wonder which films made this year will be so fondly remembered in 60 years time?

Hi David, you're probably aware that Ken Russell also made a film about Delius, but on the off-chance that you aren't and that you haven't seen it, it's available on CZcams at czcams.com/video/sMMqkb1WKpg/video.html&ab_channel=AntPDC
AntPDC's channel is well worth a glimpse if you haven't already come across it.

Thanks for the suggestion of Ken Russell’s film on Delius, David. Having been so taken by his treatment of Elgar I did a bit of hunting on CZcams and found it there along with his other works. I also enjoyed it immensely though in a less essential - existential, even - and more elaborated way.
How nice to chance across these little gems when I had all but given up on finding any enjoyable new (to me) films to watch.
I will also check out the other link you included. Thank you again.
      David

Brilliant clip. The films Russell made for Monitor ( this one and one about Debussy) stand up so well even after the passing of so many years. The 1968 film he did about Delius is even better.

Thankyou. I wonder how many people are old enough to link this music with John Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga? It always brings back particular memories for me

Glad you enjoyed it Andrew. It's funny how often pieces of music can bring back memories and associations for us. How many of us, of a certain age, can listen to the Adagio from Khachaturian's Spartacus without thinking of the Onedin Line?

Thanks, David. Interesting camerawork and editing. I'm not entirely convinced, however, that this is preferable to a succession of still images. Do you experiment with alternative visuals before uploading? Please continue your sensitive work!

I usually find the piece of music I want to upload first and then search for suitable images to go with it. Occasionally I will do it the other way round. On this particular occasion I particularly wanted to mix clips from Ken Russell's film to the music, because the image he created of Elgar cycling through the Malvern Hills to the "Introduction and Allegro" has stayed with me since I first watched the film as a child. Thanks for your continued support.
