This really cleared up some practical confusion I had with anamorphic lenses. I bet you had a blast making this video
Just wrapped on a short film that I DP'd last week and I filmed it entirely on the 32mm Silver Edition Orion. Such an incredible lens. I think Atlas sold me on a set of the 1.5X Mercuries after using that lens.
What does the Mercuries have to do with the Orions? They're different breeds no?
@@DJBFilmz yes and no. But the conversation in this video was about spherical vs. anamorphic. And the context for my comment (which I should have said) is that I’ve been teetering on the edge of buying a set of Schneider cine xenars (spherical lenses) or a set of anamorphics. Been struggling because I love the anamorphics but not every project calls for something as dramatic as a 2X anamorphic like the orions BUT the Mercuries are subtle enough at the 1.5X that I think they’re versatile enough to be used in more cases than typical, more dramatic, anamorphics.
Long story long, I settled on the anamorphics. Specifically the mercuries because after shooting the Orion, I love the character that atlas packs in their lenses and I think the mercuries are a balanced anamorphic that can really be used in a lot of scenarios that wouldn’t traditionally call for anamorphic
Thank you SO MUCH for this video matti.!
Great one
Really helpful to me and you’re right they’re all great but it depends on which lens suits your project best
Matti I've been inspired by you for years. You're one of the reasons I started making youtube videos myself. Keep it going brother! 📽
Cracked 100k bro, told u im coming
You two have never looked so good!! I’m looking at it and thinking; how they do that?😂
Some good lines and you have a movie going 😉
You should try to get an Iscorama 42! It has a compression of 1.42 and it's super versatile both with 16:9, 4:3 and 3:2 sensors
I'm perfectly fine with the 1.33x or 1.6x anamorphic with 16:9 over the 2x with 3:2 open gate because it softens up the image.
used the atlas lenses on my first short film a couple weeks ago and absolutely love these lenses
I currently use Rokinon T1.5 spherical lenses on my Sony A7iv, and they're great, but those Viltrox anamorphic lenses have me very intrigued. I'd love to try out the 35mm!
Last music video I did we shot for 4:3, loved that more square look for that project.
I've used DZO and really like them a lot especially for the price. Thinking about Anamorphic. So maybe in the middle? Great stuff, BTW!
cool! please test the Laowa nanomorph!!
One thing to note is that even though the viltrox anamorphic are 1.33x they do resemble a 1.5x/1.8x much closer compared to some other option due to their concave elememt in the front.
You’re right on the squeeze appearing more like a 1.8x but that’s because Viltrox designed these a little like the Hawk Vantage in where the aperture blades close down to an oval shape enhancing the look of the bokeh more than the 1.33x would imply.
The lens grouping outside of that doesn’t have anything extra added to the anamorphic block ( concave or otherwise ). Unlike the Hawk Vantage which only simulates the look of the anamorphic bokeh, the Vazen Epics having a genuine anamorphic block giving you some of the other attributes of good classic anamorphic lens like pleasing barrel distortion and nicely textured flares that are both complex and easy to control.
This lens is pretty special in my mind as it gives you all the best attributes of the anamorphic look but it’s mild anamorphic stretch ( on paper ) allows it to be clean enough for jobs that you may not normally have considered anamorphic for, corporate, commercial etc.
This was great! I don’t know why but the vibe reminds me of Christmas, and I’m all for it.
Edit: I do know why: 1) Christmas lights, 2) talking about gear, 3) good vibes
Cool!✌️
A few years ago I tried a spherical Zeiss CP.2 25mm lens. T 2.9, free of ghost effects thanks to highly effective lens treatment.
For those of us who shoot solely on anamorphic lenses, this video was right on time!

Love the Atlas Orions. If I could I would shoot everything with them
I’m thinking about getting one of those new Super 35 Sirui Night Walker T 1.2 lenses since they’re so small and cheap
3x2 sensor -> 2.35:1?
If the width of the image is stretched by a factor of 2, the mathematical result is 6x2 = 3:1 (3/2*2). Or what is the equation for calculating the aspect ratio?
How did you get the frame to have minimized black bars with the Viltrox lenses? Seems like with a 1.33 squeeze the black bars should have been more prominent. Open gate?
The Viltrox Epics are pretty special IMO and have a look that’s a lot closer to 1.8x than the 1.33x on paper would imply.
Viltrox designed these a little like the Hawk Vantage lenses in where the aperture blades close down to an oval shape enhancing the look of the bokeh more than the 1.33x would normally give you while also minimizing some of the traits that anamorphics with more pronounced squeeze might make undesirable for non-narrative work. If you want more character/ anamorphic funk that can always be dialed up in post but these give you a great base to start with.
This lens is pretty special in my mind as it gives you all the best attributes of the anamorphic look but it’s mild anamorphic stretch ( on paper ) allows it to be clean enough for jobs that you may not normally have considered anamorphic for, corporate, commercial etc.
i go way out of my way to avoid flare. i find it distracting and takes away from the footage i am trying to capture. it looks cool, but i dont want it in my footage 99% of the time.
why nobody's talking about wobbling effect with this kind of lens using ibis and how to fix it, does anyone noticed?
Which is better salt or sugar ?))
Yo matti i actually got the tokina vistas and love them but sheesh expensive af
I love anamorphics
Keep going until I can see an professional Film of yours in the Cinema ❤😂
Heugmongaash big ass lenses. Whoa!!!
I shoot with bmcc4k zhongyi 17mm and 35mm t1.0 and its a killer.
hi Matti What's your advice to me to start CZcams channel?
anyway, just subscribed!
Team Anamorphic. I’m a fan of the look, especially the films of the ‘70s and ‘80s, which I grew up on. Anamorphic just screams “cinema” to me. 😆
I like anamorphic lenses but my wallet hate it.
❤❤❤❤❤
How is he able to talk in like 0.5x speed naturally?
The flashy edit is badddd it disturbed the eyes
In the beginning of the video? The audio? Sounds like you're in a coffee can?
matti,
Since the majority of your Fan Base followed you for the Mirrorless camera reviews,
don't you feel like, people can't relate to this type of content?
only few watching and subscribed are real DP's and rent out cameras like the alexa mini
This is hogwash. Most of his fan base is here on technique which is camera agnostic. After all, I discover Matti when he was doing his Travel Feels videos. Mirrorless cameras are cinema cameras with training wheels. Eventually you learn to not use training wheels. I am no DP but own both Sony (not a FX3) and RED cinema cameras. I have learned more when I got the Sony cinema camera and built on that when I got the RED camera.
@@FelixCervantes Mirrorless cameras are cinema cameras? I personally don't think so,
Majority of Mirrorless camera owners aren't diving into RED cinema cameras like you man,
Their vlogging, or filming weddings
Most of his fan base IS from the mirrorless fanbase because thats literally what got him this popular,
No ones trying to get a $80,000 camera or film a commercial when they have an Sony A7iv
امك مربتكش
come on man.. the cheapest lens is .. DZoFilmm what about.. Samyang VDSLD Cine MK2... that is a better "Low Price Value" than DZOFilem...
Matti wasted everybodys very valuable lifes time. By producing a video. Just for himself where he can. Listen to himself even if it is. Himself truly bull shitting.
Why is Isaak (aka @iisakmusic8497) just cooler than the rest of us?! 😎
@@isaakmelnichuk3894 So ghost you don't even use a profile picture... old school...
Are you team Spherical or team Anamorphic????
I use spherical but I certainly love renting and messing around with anamorphic! I’d be totally fine with using anamorphic full time, if I could! I think it would give my wedding films that little extra difference to set them apart
Anamorphic
i dont yet have any anamorphic lenses. i will eventually, but not in my current budget or wishlist.
anamorphic!
Spherical.
