One difference: I find it much more enjoyable to do all the edging and string trimming first. That way the detailed work is out of the way. It seems more satisfying to do all the broad strokes with the lawnmower last. Like coloring in a coloring book: do all the fine detail (edges) first, then the rest is a breeze!
By doing the trimming and edging first, you can use the mower to pick up the clippings. If you have long blades of grass on top of a mowed lawn does not look good. I agree with you.
Yes! Exactly! When you mow first, you're trying to get as close as you can and it's a hassle. When you trim first, then its nice and relaxing and you can just mow without giving it much thought.

Just wanted to say this video was amazing and exceptionally detailed. So much to learn! As a random lady who has never mowed a lawn before, this really alleviated the anxiety. And from a plant-lovers perspective, all the focus on nourishing the lawn and preventing disease, etc, was lovely. Lots of passion from The Lawn Care Nut guy and many of us are loving it! Thank you!

From TX A&M study - consistent mowing will bring back and lawn over run with weeds in a couple years. Yes cut it to right height - to short and you’ll damage every time you cut the lawn rebounds and grows out in different directions
Just mower my lawn today. Only difference is I sat to mow mine. Would take a few days to mow mine with a push mower. I got a 29 year old Craftsman garden tractor that runs and works great.
Trim first and mow last that way your trimmings get mulched up and are not laying across the fresh cut yard.
Seems like common sense to me, but most people wouldn't know. I could remember having that same conversation with my Uncle because he does the same, trim first, then mow. Although if you have a rider, then it would be trim first, then trim mow in areas that don't fit your rider then ride mow. Also if you don't have a mulch kit, side discharge to the inside with a concentric spiral, but like he said, vary the overlap when doing said spiral each mowing.
I think for the most part, people know their lawn's and what the mower can't reach. After a few times mowing, you should know what it can't reach. I always trim first for the exact reason the OP stated.
Matt Cerilli Couldnt agree more. I was thinking the exact same thing as I was reading the replies. I always edge before I mow for the exact same reason.

I cut my lawn at 1 inch all the time I hate tall grass once it's at 3 inches I'm mowin it! Illinois gets hectic around late spring meaning I'm mowing my lawn every other day to keep it at my desired length. At rare occasions I'll mow my entire lawn 3 times usually when I have no time to mow it so it gets too big to mow it down to an inch, which unfortunately chokes the mower and stalls it out. Currently October meaning I get a break, the grass is beginning to grow slowly. Giving me a 3 to 4 day window to monitor my lawn.
This Old House you should also bag in spring when Poa Annua is going to seed. Most lawns have this weed to some degree and mulching it will actually spread it around making the problem far worse - eventually requiring a full renovation unless the lawn owner is diligent about using specialized pre-emergents and gets the timing just right. Other than that, nice advice.

Do you have an episode of how to keep grass growing on This Old House? My brother started growing grass, Rye grass, that started but is now dead as a door knob. Someone I meet used sugar mixed with water to make the bugs eat the sugar whether than the grass. Of course, he used the grass products. I've heard that beer is suppose to be good. Help if you would like. Thank you very much.

Gas is what I use to wash my hands after doing caulk, so I dont believe it will eat away asphalt

Good stuff as usual but another tip, trim before you mow and you get a nice clean look
A couple questions, how to check the sharpness of the blade? what side should I tip the mower on so oil wont seep through the valves, how to avoid oil and gas from seeping out of gas tank, why are you cutting a wet lawn in the video?
a) use your finger; b) left side, right side, upside, downside; c) do it at breakneck speeds; d) Roger is the boss

Need a video on very basic mowing patterns for a neighbor from another country. They mow like a vacuum, back and forth, no real pattern or organization - and they have an irregularly shaped backyard with a fence on half of it. Anyone know where such a video exists to include concepts of mowing the perimeter first, sectioning the lawn, etc?
No Roger you're wrong it's not on long long lawns or first cuts you use a bag all the time that way theres less mess
I"m too old and lazy to hand mow even with self propelled. That lawn looks perfect for a riding mower or light lawn tractor and if your fairly well off or have a lot of mowing then a 0 radius riding mower. My self on that lawn i'd use a troy bilt riding mower, then that way I can pull a utility cart if needed, which makes the riding mower multi function. One thing I did notice with the troy bilt 11 HP rear engine riding mower is it leaves uncut grass in the center of the blade when making tight turns which you have to go back over but it's a small price to pay to not walk a zillion miles being a mower where the stones etc., can also fly back and hit you. The troybilt does have great traction, good mowing speed and plenty of power and rides fairly well.
