I would think any diet that helps physical conditions would help because it removes concerns/stressors and lessen exacerbation of ADHD traits. I’ve done an elimination diet created by my allergist. It also involved rotation of foods in “type” groups. It’s stressful and requires a lot of planning. lol.

While I am always for eating a healthy diet, I wonder if the stress of planning and following a diet (especially a very restrictive diet) exacerbates traits just as much as eating normal (especially if sensory sensitivity is involved). Idk, something to consider. As always, I imagine that the balance between these two would be different for every individual (I would personally struggle keeping a rigid diet)
***Not trying to discourage you or anyone else from a diet, especially one prescribed by a qualified professional; just asking the question

YES - the stress of these diets would def exacerbate ADHD (from someone who is struggling with basic executive function currently, let alone a special diet!)

@@amykarnehm3602 On its own an elimination diet can be difficult to get used to in particular when you add in wife and extended families and some traditional recipes have to be changed or dropped. My need arose from cluster migraines. My children have become pros at knowing what is "Dad friendly". Working in field camps was at times tricky but in general the cook managed to work around my needs.
I can see that adding back certain food type groups could be difficult to plan for, you get used to certain menu / recipes then need to change things to add certain items. 🤪🤷 Locally nitrite free meats and vegan cheese have been a revolution for myself.

@@amykarnehm3602 looking back living on my own as a youth, I could cook, make bread and all but to cook for my single self... 🤷 survived on a medium pizza doled out over three days, a few pickled eggs and wieners and too much beer and nicotine and random illegal drugs - definitely not a sustainable diet. Now with the kids moved out, wife taking long trips to hike or work and I'm back to cooking for myself... well I manage much better and get a few meals in that the wife doesn't like as she does when I'm off on adventures or work. I'm now 26 years off beer (a magor migraine trigger) and 20 years off alcohol and 11 years off nicotine.

Having anxiety and adhd is horrendous. Vyvanse helps with anxiety but all it takes is a coffee, a bit of alcohol, a bad night of sleep... to exacerbate anxiety 100 fold. 😢
I m finding it difficult to deal with friendships too. Not wanting to drink or going out is upsetting people, not matter how many times I explained my reasons to try to be quiet.

I stopped drinking almost 20 years ago, for some friends it was "do you want to go out and be DD?" then again one friend took a long time to learn "what are you drinking" to which his wife would call out his name in that stern voice meaning 'husband you F'd up again'.

    Dear Prof. Barkley,

My question is, where can I find more resources for helping my gifted kid who has ADHD?

    Hello Mr. Barkley,
I recently discovered your CZcams channel, and along with Dr. K, you both have saved my life. I greatly admire your work and wanted to make a question.
My psychiatrist mentioned that I most likely have ADHD and has scheduled some tests for me. I'll see him next month. He prescribed me Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion. I'm on day 8 btw), and I wanted to ask if you could discuss this ADHD off-label medication in one of your videos. I tried watching your medication series but couldn't find information about my pills.
We know it's an antidepressant but it works very different than SSRIs. It's used off-label for ADHD.
    Thank you!

It is interesting you mentioned a study relating to the costs of having ADHD.
I was listening to the fantastic podcast Access all on bbc sounds that discusses issues relating to disability and mental health. In the latest episode they are discussing disability & the impact it has on people who want to migrate to Australia. It seems that if you or anyone in your family has a condition such as Autism or Downs Syndrome then you will not get a visa as the Australian government see the healthcare needs as too great & far too expensive for them and it will impact on them far greater in society & economy compared to an average Australian! 😮 This is even if you are applying for roles in services that they have great need for over there. I found that shocking!! Regarding the studies of the diet - there is definitely a link between brain health and diet. Gut health has been shown to play a significant role. I'm trying to eat more protein and have a Mediterranean diet.

I don't understand from this small paragraph they have published, did the studies they looked at take into account what the ASM was used for?? Considering valproate is also prescribed for bipolar disorder which can be comorbid w/ adhd or adhd is misdiagnosed as (I think ASD too but idk abt commorbidity) it should have been taken into account, right?

Chronic allergies can also cause inflammation in the brain. So somthing like allergy immunotherapy would help for ADHD.
There is actually a link between asthma and ADHD. And we know asthma is caused by allergies much of the time. So yes an elimination diet might not be as effective as medication, but it definitely would help to administer that and allergy immuno therapy along with medication.
Yes allergies aren’t the full answer, especially for everyone with adhd. But it seems chronic allergies exasperate cognitive issues, so it might be atleast part of the answer for a portion of people with adhd.

Sounds like you maybe have _introjected_ such negative shame feelings inside yourself, and are trying to eliminate them? By accusing others with/using the negative feelings you are experiencing?
I hope you can find a place in your heart where such statements hold no value to you any longer. PEACE is your goal.
