Philippines Folk Dance "ALITAPTAP"

  • Alitaptap is originated from the province of Batangas. This folk dance is native to the Tagalogs. The term alitaptap refers to an insect which flies only at night and looks like it is carrying a lamp. Alitaptap has a light-producing organ that produces beautiful flickering lights at the rear of the abdomen as they surround a tree during the wee hours of the night.
    This dances illustrate the fiesta spirit and love of life and it is a best known type of Filipino dance. The dance attire for girls are colorful balintawak and patadyong skirts, for the boys are camisa de chino and colored trousers (Alitaptap costume). This dances is to celebrate victories, festivals, religious rituals, and thanksgiving. The musical instruments that is used to perform this dance include nose flute, bamboo guitar, drums, gongs and wooden sticks. This is an example of alitaptap folk dance video.
    This dance mimics the movement of a firefly, in a ¾ time signature music, composed of A and B. Most provinces in the Philippines have their own identifying folk dances wherein they showcase the elegance and beauty of the way they do things, the way they dress, the way they see things as shown in different paintings, as they have been influenced by various events as that happened in history.
    Steps:
    • Waltz R & L in place 3-4
    • Stand in place & lean R & L on each measure,arms
    • Kumintang R/L*5-8 REPEAT measure 1 & 2 with reverse footwork& direction 9-16
    • REPEAT all of measures 1-8
    • Waltz FWD R/L(arms in lateral position with flutters)
    • 3-4 Point R foot to R and then across L,no weight (arms; waist/skirt) 5-6 Waltz backward to place -arms lateral with flutters
