oh if we were all taught the spirit and heart of beautiful music
as Benjamin Zander does here
all darkness would have forever left the world many moons ago
Everyone should watch this Master Class - whether they enjoy Mahler or not. Zander is an inspiration to everyone.
I was so surprised by the discussion following 1:52. He asks the insightful question, that I had never considered when listening to the 4th movement, this boy wakes up and he is in Heaven ... "What happened before he got to Heaven?". Well, it has to be that he died... And further, Zander says, he died of starvation -- which is why this vision of Heaven is all about the abundant food!
Wait, who doesn't like Mahler?
Fascinating, how much more understandable the text was after the interpretation (!) tips of Mr Zander.
Oh gosh! I like his comments just before 3:00 (and passim) about how the boy must have died just before he got to heaven. But I thought his specific description that the boy starved to death (hence the joy of the heavenly feast), and the outcry "Mother mother, feed me or I shall die" was a matter of reading-in a backstory he was interpreting.
But no! I was forgetting that there are other poems in the Des Knaben Wunderhorn collection that Mahler set. And just last night I heard Das irdische Leben (The earthly life), and that is precisely the backstory Ben is using about the boy starving and calling out to his mother!
8. Das irdische Leben
“Mutter, ach Mutter! es hungert mich,
Gib mir Brot, sonst sterbe ich.”
“Warte nur, mein liebes Kind,
Morgen wollen wir ernten geschwind!”
Und als das Korn geerntet war,
Rief das Kind noch immerdar:
“Mutter, ach Mutter! es hungert mich,
Gib mir Brot, sonst sterbe ich.”
“Warte nur, mein liebes Kind,
Morgen wollen wir dreschen geschwind.”
Und als das Korn gedroschen war,
Rief das Kind noch immerdar:
“Mutter, ach Mutter! es hungert mich,
Gib mir Brot, sonst sterbe ich.”
“Warte nur, mein liebes Kind,
Morgen wollen wir backen geschwind.”
Und als das Brot gebacken war,
Lag das Kind auf der Totenbahr.
8. The earthly life
“Mother, oh Mother! I’m hungry;
give me bread, or I shall die!”
“Wait a little, my darling child;
tomorrow we shall harvest quickly.”
And when the corn had been harvested,
the child wailed again:
“Mother, oh Mother! I’m hungry;
give me bread, or I shall die!”
“Wait a little, my darling child;
Tomorrow we shall thresh quickly.”
And when the corn had been threshed,
the child wailed again:
“Mother, oh Mother! I’m hungry;
give me bread, or I shall die!”
“Wait a little, my darling child;
Tomorrow we shall bake quickly.”
And when the bread had been baked,
the child was lying on the funeral bier.
Impressive singer and Zander always so insightful and amusing. Great video!
The accompanist was totally not in the right league for this haha. But that's not her fault, it's the fault of the person who sat her there.
The oxen dying 20:27
피아노로 들으니, 이 4 악장에 "대지의 노래"와 중국에 대한 유럽인의 상상력이 확실히 보이누나...
Zander seems a Little Bit pissed Here 🤣
the accompanist has no idea what its supposed to sound like.
It is also a terrible instrument.
Ben gave his recording of this piece to me when he saw my husband and I perform in Martha's Vineyard this past weekend. He thought it to be perfect for my voice. It's fascinating to direct this girl with his usual enthusiasm for music. I wouldn't say this girl has the right voice for it.
I think you are very wrong...
Im glad you think it is perfect for you but let someone else sing it too...
That pianist is a poor player, far too heavy handed . She just doesn't get the lightness of touch which Benjamin is after .
I believe that's a bit over critical, but hey everybody's got a right to their opinion :~)
questa ragazzina non conosce la base del canto,e' un fatto.
il resto cioè le parole del Maestro sono del fumo ...
Zander is having a lot of trouble with the pianist here.
Not Genius Dina…😅
