  • Weight management in The Long Dark may seem a bit daunting at first, or perhaps you're a bit confused as to what you should keep and what you should leave behind. Have no fear! I give some helpful hints and tips regarding your inventory, as well as when and what you should consider dropping, all circumstances considered that is! Weight is a crucial concern in The Long Dark, although not as much as freezing to death. But you are going to want to spend some time sorting through that musty backpack to ensure you're not overburdened with things you might not need immediately!
    As with all things in the Long Dark, moderation is key! Don't spend too much time in your pack, but don't ignore it either.

    Snow shelter is a life saver...always have at least 15 sticks on hand. I got trapped in a blizzard while on a hunt. Day started clear and it was early game for me so I wasn't easily managing my food. Wolves and bears kept chasing me away from rabbit areas...and I eventually got a bow made with one arrow.
    Needless to say, when I did kill that wolf that was stalking me on a clear day, I figured I was safe, I harvested the meat while starting a fire...getting some immediate food to satiate my starving character.
    Big mistake, by the time the first cut finished grilling fire went out to blizzard. Soon it was a white out, and I was near frozen in less than 2minutes. There was a wolf in the way of the immediate trail home, and I had nowhere to go...key in snow shelter. Went inside and warmed up immediately. Slept through the blizzard and narrowly avoided starving. Woke up to night time and my health 3/4 full...crawled out to the well bellow zero conditions killed a few rabbits and fled to my shelter....woke up the next day with enough food to last for 3 days...and the chance to kill the last wolf blocking my path to base.
    Hardest survival run so far...one arrow...one bow...and all the predators.

    I generally only carry the clothing that I am wearing, along with a few extra cloth pieces for repairs. I've so far never felt the need to switch clothes due to wetness or freezing. Regarding firewood, I generally only carry firestarters (matches) because I can pick up sticks along the way and the heavy logs are only needed if i come across an animal because my clothing is warm enough to only start draining temperature during a storm. Most of my inventory space is instead filled with food and tools and weapons. Oftentimes it's a good idea to take either a hacksaw or hatchet, not both, and similarly drop the prybar unless you know you'll be needing it a lot in a particular area where there are a lot of car trunks or lockers e.g. carter hydro dam.

    I'm an inventory nerd and (even though I'm brand new) can condense 80 pounds into 55 or so in about 10 minutes. If I can't carry it, I use it or find a way to compact it. If I'm gonna find more of it soon or just more easily, then using some of it now won't hurt. Non-perishables go first in food, clothes I'm not gonna wear turn into cloth, fire starting items will be burned for warmth, and while I'm spending the burnable stuff, I'm melting some snow and turning my shrooms into tea. If you can't carry it or won't need it very soon, SPEND IT. Get the most out of it while it's spent. About the fire stuff, if you got a lot of food, cook it while its burning. Craft things to make a pile of extra materials into compact items you need. I don't know if this helps you, but it sure as hell works for me. Let me know what you think, Lonelywolf. What about weight management during late game? After crafting most of your clothing and having to live off the land you're going to have to manage with what you got. For example your clothing will pretty much be set with whatever keeps you warm and can't take off.
    Depending on the circumstances you can either carry your bow on a hunt or go for a forge run.
    You could balance hours of firewood with amounts of water. Carry whatever tools will be necessary for what you about to do and even leave something where you can come back to.
    The question now becomes what can you gather while running out of resources.

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 3 lety +1

    Initially, before I figured out where I was going to establish my basecamps, traplines, and workshops, I was a packmule carrying everything I gave a passing thought to carrying. Did this in Wintermute, which was not advisable in the least. Voyager, started in Pleasant Valley, the region which I think heavily influenced the style I developed. It's a rough region, which means when you're initially trying to get your bearing and consult the wonderful community maps, you feel the need to be absolutely prepared. Firewood, arms, firestarters, extra matches, etc.
    Once I established a camp though, I felt easier and easier about leaving equipment behind. There also was less food available, which meant that wasting more resources lugging about equipment became more taxing, and less useful to assuage my fears. And, once I got out of PV and into CH, there just wasn't the same sorts of dangers. Generally speaking, you could avoid the predators, and food was abundant, provided you have hook and line. LOS reached out farther, didn't need as many bullets to ward off threats. Etc. And with some mid-game gear, the cold became less a OMG sort of problem. I've stuck to one layer in DP for about a week, no serious issue outside of heavy fog soaking through the layers.
    Minimum kit now is more like ~30 lbs, which gives me plenty of room to do my passtimes of rock collecting, mass firewood harvesting, and collecting every shinny thing I think worth grabbing from the rest of the world. I typically return to any one of my bases at about 80 lbs.

    Firstly, I love your videos. I find them awesome, they helped me a lot. This one tho seems a bit too vague for me - too general I guess. Also you said that early game it does not matter while I would say that early game is absolutely paramount to know what to keep and what not (talking Inteloper ofc) - someone carrying 80 sticks and 30 cattail heads, 10l of water while their goal is to scout the area for unique things. Or keeping rabbit furs, guts, etc. - its not a priority as rabbits can be easily farmed later on (its nice to have it, but its not worth over something you cant craft and you will need later - such as hacksaw or even coal maybe). I think it might be nice to go over priorities of such items especially in early game and talk about what to keep and what not when you are leaving your first area (ofc it depends on map as well, but some examples/general rules would be nice). Maybe a new video? What do you think? ;)

    Well, sorry to say, but I am exactly at the same spot I was before seeing this video. You give no helpful advice here. "Keep what you think you will need" what kind of help is this

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 5 lety +37

      That exact statement is a condensed version of all the tips contained in the video. When pulled out of context, you're right. It is of no help. Keep in mind that every difficulty level is different, and what you carry is dependant upon a few factors: What you find, what you immediately need, and what will be of use later on down the road but may not have primary importance right now.
      You've got to consider what goals and ambitions you have in mind and how you want to accomplish them, then compare those to your inventory and see what's of the utmost importance and move down the list to least important. Once you've done that you can prioritize what you carry and prepare for the journey ahead. For a brief example: I'm ready to do a looting trip around Mystery Lake after arriving from Forlorn Muskeg and I've not been here yet, just looted Camp office last night upon arrival. Because I have this specific goal in mind, I know I won't need a lot of things on me, such as research books, lots of food and water, most my tools (Except for a bow/rifle and a preferred melee weapon for defense) whetstones, sewing kits, materials, etc. I can trim my inventory down to just enough water for the day, a few bits of food to keep my full, and leave the rest of my backpack empty for collecting all those goodies I'm going to find.
      Or if I'm going hunting, I can prioritize warm clothing, and leave just about everything else but a bit of fuel behind. I'll be getting food and water after I'm done hunting so I'll just need enough for the morning. My fire will scare the wolves off so I shouldn't worry about carrying flares or torches unless I feel they'll help.
      I'm not certain how I failed to explain that improperly or poorly in the video. But I'd be a poor teacher if I blamed the student for that fault and instead didn't change the method of delivery into a format you can understand. What exactly is it you were hoping to find from this video and how did it fail to accomplish that? What are you struggling with in your current runs that you sought to rectify but couldn't understand from this video? I'll try to address it in a different way if it could be of some value to you. Thank you so much for the feedback, I'm always trying to improve my delivery and content to keep it as concise as possible while still giving you all the information you'll need to succeed! Stay safe and stay warm out there.

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 5 lety +6

      No problem! When you just start out and don't know the exact function of every item or how it could help, it's very easy to just assume that EVERYTHING is completely necessary. Once you know the game a little bit and begin to get a handle on surviving and know what all the items can do and where they can be used, all this information begins to fall into place and to click, as you'll be able to determine what you plan to do for a day and what you'll need to accomplish that. Then you can drop items or outfit yourself accordingly. It's just about taking the time to realize what's taking up space that will most likely be useless in the immediate future in pursuing that immediate goal.

      I might consider it down the road a bit but for now, Check the daily temperatures listed by pressing F or going to the status page in your menus. See what the lowest daily temperature is (not the 'feels like, but listed right above.' Then dress with enough warmth to overcome that. So if it is actually 1F outside, dress with +28-32F total bonus on your clothing. That way you trim out all unnecessary weight.

I know I am not the only one having this issue! - so you need 28-32 degrees above the daily temp to NOT loose any warmth condition? I think that's my real question - how warm do you need to be above the daily temp to NOT loose any warmth or be cold at all? What is the threshold for 1 down arrow on body temp? Thanks a lot man!

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 5 lety +1

      You need to reach 32+F to be warm. So as per the example if the average daily temp is ~1F you need +28-32F total clothing bonus to be warm. If it's lower than that you're going to need even more.

    Nice tut series. I would only argue here that past the hobo phase of the game and you have shop someplace that its best to carry a variety of gear with you out on trips for resources or exploration. You can always drop things to lighten the load on your way back but if you didnt bring something you really needed when that blizzard shows up, like your 1.5kg hatchet, while your half a day away from home you might die. Better to go out prepared and drop what you must on the way home. Also leave sticks at home, they everywhere :)

    • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 5 lety

      I'd agree and disagree with your statements! The reason is that everyone's playstyles vary to a degree. So what's good for one person may not be equally good for another. There are a few things with mechanics in the game where you can say, objectively, this is the best way to go about x or y. But for things like your above advice, that comes down to subjective benefit. One person may find that carrying all that gear is just annoying and not do so, even if for you that seems like a really dumb idea.
      I'm not saying this in an attempt to discount your ideas or advice in any way! Just to point out that not everyone will find that the best way for them to play! That's my goal with these guides: Present all the variables and data you need to consider so that you can form your opinion and change your playstyle accordingly to fit. For you, that would mean stocking up one central location and then taking whatever you might possibly need with you on a day to day excursion basis. For others, maybe they prefer to maintain a system of being a hobo forever!

    Lol. I'm in a dilemma. I'm going to make a trip to mystery lake from milton. I've had a goddamn amazing start. Two rifles (that I plan to bring because no cleaning kit), kilo and a half of water, two kilos of lamp fuel, 6+ kilos of cloth (Since you chew through it too quickly if you want all your fancy jackets in top condition) two hatchets I also plan to bring because one is in very poor shape, a kilo of firewood for good measure, negligible food weight (I plan to embark in peak condition), 5 kilos of clothes I plan not to wear on the trip, and PILES of deer and rabbit pelts, guts and saplings (I worked too hard for all of that and I REALLY need some better boots). Lol. I've gone over it more than I have anything in the long dark, and it's a shame I absolutely will have to drop things to make the rope climb.
    (Also with such fancy chest gear like the M's pea coat and fisherman's sweater contrasted again torn denim jeans and running shoes I look like a hipster)
    (Also also, these jeans just failed to repair three times in a row, proving I'm not insane for carrying 60+ piece of cloth.)

      Sorry for the late reply, it probably won't help you now. I'd leave behind one of the rifles, you can always come back for it again later. It may benefit you to make multiple trips if you really want to get all that gear out of Milton.

    • @cougar2k720
      @cougar2k720 Před 4 lety

      If you are moving from regions to regions with duplicate items like rifle and hatchet, I usually try to leave them at the base that you have established.
      You can also repair clothing once the condition is down at least 70 percent, so you get more bang for your buck. If you know you are going to climb ropes in the outing to say collect stuff in some area, you just need to pack what you need to avoid encumbered. I manage to get my weight down to 17kg before descending to ravine to collect meat so I only need a knife to carve the meat and a bed roll if I need rest. Had full fill of water and food before I head out from maintenance yard.

      Hate to break it to you but prybar is actually pretty bad. In my testing, a hatchet will get them off of you quicker typically. Your mileage may vary of course but my general rating from worst to best would go:
      Fist
      Unleveled revolver
      prybar
      knife (in terms of speed but hey he dies afterward)
      Hatchet (YMMV, kind of a wildcard)

If you're just trying to scare the waff yeah, the prybar works. • @Lonelywolfofficial
      @Lonelywolfofficial  Před 5 lety +16

      I'm sorry that's all you got out of it.
      The problem with weight management in The Long Dark is thus: It's purely subjective. That is to say, there is no guaranteed set of things to carry all the time and no set of items to never carry. What you should carry and what you should not carry is based solely on two factors: Your current objectives and goals and the items YOU FEEL are best suited to assist you in achieving those goals.
      That's why it's hard to give situation-problem-solution advice. Due to such a variance in playstyles and what people deem necessary to carry and what helps you fulfill your goal, there's not a 'one-size-fits-all' solution that I can give. I do give some clear and laid out examples of a few situations that I encounter and how I handle it and some ideas on prioritizing gear based off your play style. But ultimately I can't say "light a fire its cold or find nearest shelter" because unlike freezing to death, there are far more variables involved in your inventory. It's not purely objective. I can't just say one thing is so and it is so.
      I tried my best to convey that in the video, that what your goals are and what you prioritize item wise are what you need to focus on when sorting your inventory. I can't make those goals for you nor can I tell you what to prioritize. I'm sorry if I failed to convey that properly. Weight management is a very difficult concept and it's not an easy one to discuss. Hopefully, you succeed on your runs! I'm sorry I wasn't much help for you in this video.

      You have 30 kilograms. Not pounds.
      You can switch to emperial system, but I have no idea why would anyone prefer it.
      Not only metric system is objectively superior to imperial (1L of water = 1kg; 1m³ of water = 1000 kg; 1 meter = 10 decimeters = 100 centimeters = 1000 millimeters = 0.001 kilometer), but the whole game was developed for metric system.
      Your weight capacity is 30 kg and it can be increased by 5 kg.
      You can only harvest meat / boil water in the increments of half a kilo.
      And so on, and so on.
