    I'm glad I'm not the only person out there who was trying to find this commercial. It was driving me crazy cause I thought it was Spanglish, "Home en ocupicied" so that's what I always used to Google.
    Finally, after I can't remember how many years, but FINALLY, I had the bright idea to Google 80's commercial Payphone, and here I am! Bula Vinaka, Beechside... BULA VINAKA, BEECHSIDE!!!! FINALLY!!!!!

      Greg Duncan "long distance commercial naka maka" is the Google search that got me to this video. I couldn't remember what the commercial was for and knew I was only guessing at the phrase, since I never could understand it back in '88 when we didn't have Google, CZcams or anything else to help us figure out what he was really saying. :)

    Almost nobody got the words right when this played on television. It was the pre-digital age and unless you taped it on your VCR you would not know. Even then, it was virtually impossible to figure it out. A columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer did a story on it. The title was "Something by the beachside?" In the article he revealed what that guy who answered the phone was actually saying.

      Like everyone else here the actual words are news to me, but I love how confidently my friends and I just used the totally wrong saying as a cipher, almost like a greeting at times. "Ola minaka bisay!"

    For me it will always be Bo-minai-kopee-sigh. The fact that I was able to pull this up in less than a minute to show someone what the heck I was talking about when I said Bo-minai-kopee-sigh over and over again is pretty amazing.

    LOL, I was SO focused on finding this commercial. I had mixed it up with a Fujifilm commercial for some reason. I couldn't remember that it was AT&T! "Bula Vinaka, Beachside!" :-) For almost 30 years, I have thought it was "Yo-man yakapeesi".....@Greg Duncan, don't worry, you weren't the only one a little off..... :-P Since I am leaving for Fiji in a couple of months, I am more amused by this than EVER before. At least this commercial helps with native Fijian pronunciation.

    My god. Seeing so many people with their personal interpretations of this gem renews some basic faith in humanity.
    Our version was “DOMINACA PEE-SIDE” and if you didn’t immediately answer with an irritated “WUT?!” then it was an issue.

    my friends and I use the greeting on each other. One person said the "bula vinaka beachside" greeting (except we said "hocha mocha beachside) and the other would say "fiji?"
