My dad lived three hours away from me every time he answered the phone he would say this to be silly he died a year ago today thank you for posting this it helps me remember and feel close
I'm glad I'm not the only person out there who was trying to find this commercial. It was driving me crazy cause I thought it was Spanglish, "Home en ocupicied" so that's what I always used to Google. Finally, after I can't remember how many years, but FINALLY, I had the bright idea to Google 80's commercial Payphone, and here I am! Bula Vinaka, Beechside... BULA VINAKA, BEECHSIDE!!!! FINALLY!!!!!
For some reason this commercial has been lodged in my brain since I first saw it in the 80's. Every time someone says Pheonix or Fiji I have to refrain from reflexively saying "Bula Vinaka, Beachside"
I still answer the phone sometimes with" Bula by the beachside". That's what i always thought they said. Funny! This shit sticks with you. Careful what your kids watch. Lol
It's great seeing all the different phrases we came up with to answer phones for 20 years. But we each would have recognized each other's efforts. So funny and a little heartbreaking to see what it really is.
I can't believe I fould this commercial. I've been saying waka maka pee side for years and nobody knows what im saying. Ha now I have proof. Ya I was a little off.
Greg Duncan "long distance commercial naka maka" is the Google search that got me to this video. I couldn't remember what the commercial was for and knew I was only guessing at the phrase, since I never could understand it back in '88 when we didn't have Google, CZcams or anything else to help us figure out what he was really saying. :)
Almost nobody got the words right when this played on television. It was the pre-digital age and unless you taped it on your VCR you would not know. Even then, it was virtually impossible to figure it out. A columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer did a story on it. The title was "Something by the beachside?" In the article he revealed what that guy who answered the phone was actually saying.
Like everyone else here the actual words are news to me, but I love how confidently my friends and I just used the totally wrong saying as a cipher, almost like a greeting at times. "Ola minaka bisay!"
This thread could go on for ages with how many different phonetic pronunciations of what we all thought that guy must have been saying all those years ago.
For me it will always be Bo-minai-kopee-sigh. The fact that I was able to pull this up in less than a minute to show someone what the heck I was talking about when I said Bo-minai-kopee-sigh over and over again is pretty amazing.
LOL, I was SO focused on finding this commercial. I had mixed it up with a Fujifilm commercial for some reason. I couldn't remember that it was AT&T! "Bula Vinaka, Beachside!" :-) For almost 30 years, I have thought it was "Yo-man yakapeesi".....@Greg Duncan, don't worry, you weren't the only one a little off..... :-P Since I am leaving for Fiji in a couple of months, I am more amused by this than EVER before. At least this commercial helps with native Fijian pronunciation.
My god. Seeing so many people with their personal interpretations of this gem renews some basic faith in humanity. Our version was “DOMINACA PEE-SIDE” and if you didn’t immediately answer with an irritated “WUT?!” then it was an issue.
I am here for the same reason, I think i was 14 at the time and this would play during Tracy Ulman, or 30 something lol, Never knew what that guy said , I would say Banna bakka SEE SY, and than mutter to myself Figii, again!
So *THAT'S* what the guy was saying. For 25 years I thought it was something in a foreign language that spelled out phonetically as "Waka Maka Pee Side!" Thanks for sharing this!
I can't tell if I'm happy or disappointed now that I know what that guy is saying. It's been a running joke for 20 years. You gotta love the internet. lol.
Finally! I can now rest in the universe. I found the commercial with that saying. My search was "80's "yo ka naka" commercial -yoyo", i left off the peesay cause I knew that spelling was wrong.
I dont know how you figured out that that was what he is saying but you must be correct. Bula Vinaka is a Fijian greeting according to multiple sites. I always thought it was Helloca malka peeside. Thanks!
haHAAA! This brought me here: czcams.com/video/OBjtLClZGck/video.html I always thought this commercial was "Okinawa Beachside" when I was an annoying teen I would yell that out in class and get sent to the principal's office... good times, good times!
my friends and I use the greeting on each other. One person said the "bula vinaka beachside" greeting (except we said "hocha mocha beachside) and the other would say "fiji?"
So happy I found this after all these years of wondering if I was hallucinating it back in the day or not...
ALL THESE IT BOTHERED ME THAT I COULDN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS SAYING! 😂
This has been an ongoing family quote my dad has been using for my whole life. We used to say it more like 'mocha locha peetside"
My dad lived three hours away from me every time he answered the phone he would say this to be silly he died a year ago today thank you for posting this it helps me remember and feel close
Thanks K he was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met
❤
I always thought it was "bona-oka-peesye" this fucking commercial has stuck with me for over 20 years
I thought it romanaka piz-ay
He actually says " Bula Vinaka, Beachside".
YOU’RE NOT ALONE 😂
Wow... I finally found it, what a gem! I’ve been saying mama-laka-pizai for over 30 years! I cannot express how happy I am right now.
... he really is. What a nut! ~his brother
Bula Vinaka, Beachside
That's what he says
and we say "maka-laka-feesh-side"
I thought and continue to say "nakamachi beachside" for spammers....gotta practice "bula vinaka , beachside" now :-)
I've been saying "well I am now" for 30 years.
when the telemarketers call this is my opening line
Mine too. Sometimes, like today, I embarrass myself when it turns out to be a legitimate call of some sort.
Same here.
Lol I love all the comments!
@@greg74duncan Do you love the comments about Tom Hanks getting coronavirus? czcams.com/video/Jyl3wOazMqo/video.html
Brilliant! 😂
I'm glad I'm not the only person out there who was trying to find this commercial. It was driving me crazy cause I thought it was Spanglish, "Home en ocupicied" so that's what I always used to Google.

glad I'm not the only one this commercial stuck with. The guy dialing the phone looks like the guy who played David Silver's dad in 90210
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Laurance
I've been saying AkanakaPizai for years. It's how I often answer my phone! Too funny.
Bula Vinaka, Beachside
This is how I answer my phone when an unknown call or spam call comes ringing ,makes them so mad because I keep saying it lol 😂
For some reason this commercial has been lodged in my brain since I first saw it in the 80's. Every time someone says Pheonix or Fiji I have to refrain from reflexively saying "Bula Vinaka, Beachside"
Never knew what the f*ck he was saying. Now, I can die in peace.
just heard Hank Venture answer the phone with this greeting. No one knew why I was laughing
ddsmitty1 there are so many small jokes in that show that I have to pause it and Google it to understand the reference. This is one of those times
Yes
I just noticed it now. I’m like where do I know that from?? Google it. Unbelievable the tiny things that they hide in this show!
Omg Yes! I know! I lost my shit too when i heard that. Lol!!!
I still answer the phone sometimes with" Bula by the beachside".
That's what i always thought they said. Funny!
This shit sticks with you. Careful what your kids watch. Lol

Greg Duncan wocka knocka pee side lol
Its just one of those 'got to know it' things from our past. I have a few others.
Greg Duncan "long distance commercial naka maka" is the Google search that got me to this video. For me, it was "Moana maka pee sigh."
+Rob Rosenberg Me too! Mona mak a pesi
You're not dealing with AT&T. WELL I AM NOW!!
"hoo oma naka feets eye." That's what I've always said whenever I know a telemarketer is calling. "No, you've reached Fiji!"
Almost nobody got the words right when this played on television. It was the pre-digital age and unless you taped it on your VCR you would not know. I remember this being in the newspaper at the time. The article said they guy is saying, "Cabana by the beach side."
They need to find these guys and do a remake of it!!!
For me it will always be Bo-minai-kopee-sigh. The fact that I was able to pull this up in less than a minute to show someone what the heck I was talking about when I said Bo-minai-kopee-sigh over and over again is pretty amazing.
Monty-LaKa-peaside
I thought it was Moka Locka Pi'isa.
Me too. Amazing that I was able to Google this and find out what they were finally saying after all these years. Bless the internet!
Greg Fowler I googled macka lacka behind tv commercial and got here.
Haha this was the most annoying commercial ever 😂
Altair Ibn-La Ahad same! It was clarified for me in an episode of The Venture Brothers haha
Same here other than at the end, it sounded to me like Peace Sign
Me too
YES! For 20 years, I thought the guy was saying "Poly naka Pizzai" Thank you Venture Bros.
When I was a kid I always thought he said “Yoka Nocka Bee Say”, which was clearly Fijian for “Hello”.
I was either 14 or 15 by this time! This was one of my fave AT&T ads!!
I found this long lost commercial searching "mona pizza att commercial" Mona laka pizzai! Svsugvcarter is a hero!
"waka laka pitzai", was what I'd thought it was for years
1 person that disliked this is not dealing with AT&T
LOL, I was SO focused on finding this commercial. I had mixed it up with a Fujifilm commercial for some reason. I couldn't remember that it was AT&T! All these yeeeears!!! I thought he was saying "Bahoma Nakka Fee Si" 😂
Finally I have been wondering what the guy in Fiji was saying for 20 years.
i've been telling my boys it was poka lika pizai... now I can teach them what it really says :)
Thanks for explaining it. I never had a clue what he was saying, but it still lodged in my memory.
Wow. This was 1988? It feels like it was late 90s when this commercial aired. I'm more dated than I'd imagined. Bula vinaka, my friends! Bula Vinaka!
I've been looking for this! WOW! It's been 25 years.
A friend at Hawthorne Catapilar would say that phrase.
I want it as a ringtone.
This just randomly popped up in my head and found it. All these years I thought it said moka noka visa. lmfao I was a kid.
My god. Seeing so many people with their personal interpretations of this gem renews some basic faith in humanity.
Our version was “DOMINACA PEE-SIDE” and if you didn’t immediately answer with an irritated “WUT?!” then it was an issue.
I sometimes answer my wife's calls with "donka-naka-vee-sigh," thanks to how I heard this commercial.
Love this!! Thanks I always thought he said mookahla feetsight
"Look-a-like-a-veesta-i." I still answer my phone that way.
God Bless Google, CZcams and the internet in general. Oh and I'm going with Mona Leka Besi.
I say this all the time!!! No one knows what I'm talking about... My Google search was "NockaMocka Beach Side Commercial"
ME TOO!
I’ve been saying “occa mocca peesa “ since 1988
I kept thinking, "cabana by the beach side" today for some reason. Finally remembered it was from this.
OMG I always thought he was saying Waka Naka Beachside!
This is how I answer the phone. Bula vinaka beachside.
My God me too. I was ten when this commercial was on TV CONSTANTLY. Love your kitty, by the way.
bRONA OVcapeeside. I remember this. thank you. I still say this when I answer my phone.
I knew kids at school who would answer the phone with that line. Classic.
I remember this as “Rowinanoka beachside”
I heard it as "coma naka visay", and never knew what it meant - mystery finally solved.
I thought it was Waka-laka Beachside! 🤣
I am here for the same reason, I think i was 14 at the time and this would play during Tracy Ulman, or 30 something lol, Never knew what that guy said , I would say Banna bakka SEE SY, and than mutter to myself Figii, again!

I always thought the guy said "Bone-ah Ahka Beachside"... Cripes. All these years, I've been wrong.
I can't tell if I'm happy or disappointed now that I know what that guy is saying. It's been a running joke for 20 years. You gotta love the internet. lol.
Here we thought it was "Doma naka bee-say." Knowing that the last word is "Beachside" just makes me sad for some reason.
I totally remember this commercial!
What are the chances of randomly calling Fiji from the U.S and getting an American answering the phone? Nothing less than astonishing.
😆😆😆😆😆
Finally! I can now rest in the universe. I found the commercial with that saying. My search was "80's "yo ka naka" commercial -yoyo", i left off the peesay cause I knew that spelling was wrong.
I always thought it was "Homona mokka pisay" haha. That phrase has been on my outgoing phone message for close to two decades. Wow.
Been saying, "Goya kanocka peesay" for 20 years now. xD))
Alexander Graham Bell (who should really have had some say in the matter) thought the best way to answer the phone was "Ahoy!"
For my friends and I it was "Moka Laka Bayside!"
I dont know how you figured out that that was what he is saying but you must be correct. Bula Vinaka is a Fijian greeting according to multiple sites. I always thought it was Helloca malka peeside. Thanks!
I been saying "Phil acapeeside" for 20 years thank you uploader.
I said Okka Nokka Pe-say for years!
I've spent 30 years trying to figure out what the fuck the dude in Fuji was saying. Thank you for cleaning that up, Vurla Vinaka Beach side.
I always thought he said "Mocha lakka beetz eye"
LOL... there was never a pay phone at the "beachside" in Fiji
I answered the phone Aka Naka Bisia for the longest time. That's what I thought he said.
I always thought it was Coma Knocka Peasack. And I still answer my phone that way often.
homa laca pice for me. Hello, my people.
Flawless
And here I've been saying "Boma Naka Fijiiii" all these years...
The guy answering the phone looks more Polynesian than a Fijian. Perhaps it should have been "Talofa, Beachside"
Everyone I knew as a kid at that time knew this commercial. I personally though it was "mauna naka peetsay!"
It's Dola Maka Peesai in this household! lol
haHAAA! This brought me here: czcams.com/video/OBjtLClZGck/video.html
