Thank you! I am from Ireland. I would like to learn more about things in Serbia. I have been reading about the Yugoslav Wars and Bosnian War. Maybe you can tell me more about it all. Reading is fine but it is good to hear from someone from the place. To hear that side of the story also. Best wishes!
@@LordBoleskine Here's a brief. Of course, my goal is not to tell you untruths or to convince you. I can write a novel here with arguments and references, but here’s a brief. Serbs are the oldest people in the Balkans (besides the Greeks). In the 20th century, the Serbs fought against the 4 largest world empires: Turkey, Austria-Hungary, Nazi Germany and at the end of '99 against the NATO pact (unfortunately also against Ireland in the pact). As we were against every occupying force in the 20th century, so we have been in distant history. Every occupying force found ways to rule that area more easily and in the 18th and 19th centuries they created Croats, Albanians, Bosnians, Macedonians, Montenegrins and so on. They all have Serbian roots, and today they are the worst enemies of the Serbs and serve every occupying force (just like the NATO pact today). After the First World War, the Serbian king with the western "allies" created Yugoslavia and made alliances with other smaller Slavic peoples. The Kingdom of Serbia existed before ww1, while other quasi-states did not. After ww2, the communists ruled Yugoslavia and weakened Serbia and completed the creation of new peoples by giving other republics old Serbian territory. In '91, the disintegration of Yugoslavia along those communist borders began. Serbs are protesting, and of course the war begins. Of course, the fictional nations get support from today's world bully of the NATO pact and break up Yugoslavia. The crimes were committed on all sides, but only Serbian crimes have space in the Western media, while crimes against Serbs are not mentioned anywhere. 2 examples (check please). Before the war, 100,000 Serbs lived in Sarajevo, now not even 1,000. Before the war, 700,000 Serbs lived in Croatia, and now not even 150,000.
In Banbridge Town in the County Down One morning last July, Down a boreen green came a sweet colleen And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair. Such a coaxing elf, sure I smyself For to see I was really there. From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown colleen That I met in the County Down. As she onward sped, sure I scratched my head, And I looked with a feelin' rare, And I say's, say's I, to a passer-by, "Who's the maid with the nut brown hair"? He smiled at me and he says, say's he, "That's the gem of Ireland's crown. It's Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the star of the County Down". From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown colleen That I met in the County Down At the Harvest Fair she'll be surely there And I'll dress in my Sunday clothes, With my shoes shone bright and my hat cocked Right for a smile from my nut brown rose. No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke Till my plough turns rust colored brown. Till a smiling bride, by my own fireside Sits the star of the County Down From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown colleen That I met in the County Down

I've always loved this tune from its days as a hymn. I agree, after much listening to other versions, this is the best. It's also used by "classical" Anglo-Irish composer, Ernest Moeran, as the second of the "Two Folksong Arrangements" and called "The White Mountain".
Oh you're familiar with the hymn tune Kingsfold! Yay! Is it just me or does Kingsfold sound bittersweet and even a bit sad? Whereas as SOTCD it sounds very cheerful.
@@ClaireTDixon The "Kingsfold" tune isn't exactly the SOTCD. It's played a lot slower, and the harmony is different, more minor keyish in places. Also Kingsfold is talking about the salvation of Christ when one is "weary and worn and sad", where SOTCD is about the "salvation" of bedding (or wedding) the prettiest girl in the area.
@@TonyMatthewsComposer I don't care about the "salvation" lyrics of Kingsfold because I'm an atheist. But yes, there is a difference in the two melodies. Thank you for pointing it out.
