This is the final message NASA scientists received from the opportunity rover on mars. Launched in the summer of 2003, along with its twin rover spirit, the missions were designed to last just 90 days. After surviving on Mars for almost 15 years, in 2018; Opportunity went silent.

"My battery is low" is normal. But "it's getting dark" hits different because this line usually used by dying old people on their death bed.
Or the fact that it relied on solar power that it was basically saying "my time has come" since it knows it won't be able to recharge again due to the storm.
The first city on Mars should be called opportunity

Nobody knows conciousness more than humans, literally, we're the only creatures who can die from mental health issues.
It’s hard to make me emotional over a robot I never met, but Opportunity’s last words sent a chill down my spine and nearly brought me to tears since it sounds almost exactly like an innocent child who doesn’t know what will happen next.

I find the words beautiful as well but please remember the rovers do not communicate with language. This was the engineering teams interpretation of the last packets of data from the system; battery voltage levels, internal temperatures, wheel motor loads vs distance travelled etc.

Oppy and Spirit are roughly equal distances away from Perseverance, roughly 1,300-1,600 km apart from Percy.
This is absolutely sad. I can't imagine what the poor thing went through. Rovers are literally like space dogs in my eyes, and losing an actual dog is truly heartbreaking. Especially the message Opportunity sent. "My battery is low, and it's getting dark." Rest in Peace little robot dog. Hopefully one sunny day on Mars we humans will recover you and your twin, Spirit. 💗

Luckily the JPL engineers didn't build a nervous system for the rovers, so the robot's collective mechanical and electronic systems didn't feel anything.
It's very possible that Humans could recover and repair Opportunity and Spirit once a manned mission to Mars happens.

It’s honestly impressive how humans can feel these kind of emotions towards a robot on a different planet
I believe its because they are more than mere "rovers" to us. They are named Spirit and Opportunity. Those are as human qualities as human gets. They are an extensions to our species. They are us. And having witnessing their "death" can only inspire such true felt responses from us.

Poor guy. Its been 4 years and every year we get closer to rescuing opportunity. His last message literally made me tear up. Imagine he said, "my battery is low, it's getting dark, and I'm cold". Because in the end the low temperatures froze him since he needs power to run his internal heater

Technically that was never actually written by the rover. Its last transmission was coded signal data that a reporter named Jacob Margolis poetically translated as 'my battery is low and it’s getting dark' in a tweet. It's still a lovely thing that so many on Earth were moved by the event.

Why Spirit and Opportunity gotta make me cry like this man. Worked 20 times harder than expected and they both died alone in a foreign, dark and cold place.
It felt like the two were humans and not rovers. However, I hope that some day, humans will rescue both the rovers. And, at that time, they both, will russurect.

They said the last message “basically” said “my battery is low and it is getting dark.” The rover really said something explaining how it’s solar panels were being blocked by dust. They made it sound extra sad because lots of people were actually quite sad that Opportunity was gone.

We all feel emotions towards both of these rovers because through their time on Mars, the a
AI had developed in a way where you can sense the scared and depressed human emotions in opportunity and spirits last dying message. Imagine you being cold and alone and no way to get any energy like opportunity was. Imagine being stuck in sand with no one to help you, becoming a stationary, abandoned platform and poorly saying that you are cold and its getting dark.
