  • This piyyut is sung on Yom Kippur evening. It is an alphabetic acrostic - the first line beginning with alef and the final line with tav. This lovely melody is a traditional Eastern, or Mizrachi, melody from Jerusalem. The text is found in Kol Haneshama on pp. 794-5.

Each line in the acrostic (starting with alef and ending with the letter tav) is a line of praise - God is the master of forgiveness, awesome in praise, the one who answers in time of trouble, etc. Then the chorus phrase means "We have done wrong before you; be merciful to us."

Good and beneficent to His creations
Knower of all that is hidden
    Conquering sin
    Clothed in righteousness.
    >>We have sinned before you; have mercy upon us.
    Filled with giving merit
    Raised with praises
Forgiving for those filled with sin
    Answering when we call.
    Actualizing salvation
    Seeing into the future
    Calling upon the generations
    Riding upon the heavens
    Hearing our prayer
    Perfect in words.

    Ruler of forgiveness
    [who] examines our hearts
    Revealer of depths
    Speaker of justice.
    >>We have sinned before you; have mercy upon us.
    Majestic with wonders
From times of old, comforting us
Remembering the covenant with our ancestors
    Weighing our insides.
    >>We have sinned before you; have mercy upon us.
