Gonna be honest, for the longest time I thought the Nobel Prizes were only for scientific achievements until a few years ago. Kinda thought it was weird, but also makes sense considering what legacy Alfred Nobel wanted to leave behind.

If I remember correctly, Haber WAS a developer of pesticides and fertilizers, and pioneered some of the most effective fertilizers known to man. Around 90% of the world wouldn't be alive today without him, because without his research the human race wouldn't have boomed like it did.

Great reaction. Harber is a very interesting man, on one hand he created unimaginable suffering, on the other hand humanity improved drastically thanks to him. As a scientist, I admire the man for his discoveries, as a human being, it is hard to not be horrified by the pandora box he opened.

@@TouchyReactions Indeed. On top of that we have to also think of the context. The great war was supposed to last couple months only and after the stalemate in the west, both sides started thinking about how to finish this war faster. In this context, gas was another way of trying to shift the balance because killing more would mean saving lives on your side. It doesn't justify the horrors inflicted, but the context can help understand how this came to be...and I'm pretty sure had the british or french someone as talented as Harber, they would have done the same, but those are just ifs. Have a nice week-end :)

    Glad you liked it!🙂
I think the fact that Haber invented poison gasses, does make it worse (in our minds at least) than if it was something else. After all, when we think about something like the tank or missiles or the machine gun, how often do we think about the inventors of those? Chemical warfare feels more wrong for us as humans, I mean it's pretty much automatically a warcrime to use chemical weapons these days (or it's terrorism).
Like I said, I love how Joakim sounds in this one. It's different, but I REALLY love it.
I also really love Dreadnought. Btw. Dreadnought has had one of the coolest (I think) live show lighting etc. stuff on this tour. (Except Christmas Truce of cource, but that's a totally different type of song...)
Have fun at the show🤘😉 Hope you'll manage to meet the band😄

Tanks, missiles and machine guns have a few things in common, they have the ability to kill their enemies instantly, they also have the ability to cause high and instant damage to equipments and they can be controlled easily, but chemical weapons did none of those, they mostly kill their enemies slowly, they make their enemy suffer great pain without the ability to cause significant damage to equipments nor can it be controlled the movement to only attack a single area.
Because of these reasons, many saw chemical weapons as unethical.

I feel that Haber is deserving of his Nobel Price and not an entirely amoral person as some, or many today, assert.
He was a man of the early 20th century in many ways. A completely integrated former Ashkenazim, a glorious chemist, the inventor of chlorine gas and Buntschießen ("Colourful Shelling"), a convinced member of the scientific society, a staunch German patriot, a Prussian drillmaster in his field.
I feel that we don't have the luxury of condemning a person like Haber for his choices, and they follow clear lines - though not exactly popular ones in modernity - but this is because we have not fought World Wars for just under a hundred years and "our" believe in "our" (as a species) inherent greater maturity is currently (autumn of `22) being shelled straight to hell in Ukraine and it's (hopefully remaining so, we might also see something very much like the first and second Balkan Wars in '12 and '13, if we are especially unlucky we are living in an extended July Crisis) "Proxy World War" between NATO, EU and Russia fought on the fields of Ukraine.
We just can't truly understand the decisions and preferences of historical characters. Always keep in mind that "the past is a foreign country" and it would be presumptuous to claim to fully understand or condemn the ideals and motivations of only a hundred years ago.
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

So I think Fritz Haber is probably a really great example of the idea that in reality there is no black & white, everything is just shades of gray. What might bring prosperity and a brighter future for some might be pain and darkness for others. It's a hard thing to reconcile with but even if it might sound a bit heartless I feel he and his invention is a great example of the fact that good and evil don't really exist but it's more of a matter of your own personal perspective. Now personally I feel that if it had been possible to avoid all of the unnecessary death and destruction caused by gas then of course that would have been the preferable outcome.

I think this is very much a case of hindsight being 20-20 and the tendency of people viewing some aspects of history in black and white. There was no preconception or standards when it came to chemical warfare yet; And from the perspective of someone who wants to help bring a swift end to the war, it does seem like a rather efficient way to do so much like the concept of the atomic bomb in world war 2. You can also say the use of chemical warfare in WWI created the stigma against the use of chemical weapons, which would have no doubt eventually been invented with or without Haber, perhaps with increased lethality had they come along later on and had we not already realized how terrible they were.
