I was born and raised in the US and we spoke Vietnamese in my household. Thought I was so badass being bilingual. Then I went to visit family in Vietnam and boy was I wrong. My sister and I kept getting lectured by our aunts that we weren’t saying things correctly and you speak to younger people differently from older people. How the heck were we supposed to know that when we were only used to talking to older people. So eye opening 😂

I moved from a city in Southern California that has a massive Vietnamese community to a small town in England where there is only a handful of us. My biggest regret is not speaking vietnamese with my 10 year old son and he knows nothing. I am speaking vietnamese everyday now to my 7 month old daughter even though I doubt she will understand it. Growing up my stepdad was Vietnamese and so I was always going to viet parties and around viet people. Unfortunately, I never learned, but this was really nostalgic for me.
I’m so glad that I’m Vietnamese and I understand it but I really need to work on speaking it (and understanding reading) 😭 It actually is very hard to learn too because it all depends on your tone one wrong word and it’s over
I studied Vietnamese for a very short time about three years ago. Now I don’t remember anything I learned; I don’t even recall how to read the letters! 🤦🏾♀️😅 Watching this was so fun, though. It makes me want to study again. 😂

I know how difficult it is to speak in your mother’s tongue. But your Vietnamese sounded excellent even though I didn’t understand a word. I speak fluent Cantonese but gutted I didn’t teach my children the lingo. Lyla is so clever and keep teaching her your language as English they will get taught in school.
