I get tired of people saying these cars are for commuters or for someone's first car. I just turned 50 and love my Corolla. It's reliable and I'm not car poor. Even if I could afford a $40,000 SUV, I would still pick the Corolla. If I wanted something with a little more oomph I would get a Kia Forte GT. I don't want a SUV, or even a larger car like a Camry. Some of us are fine looking uncool in our so called first, commuter car.
They’re called commuter cars because their only purpose is to be inexpensive to frequently drive. High MPG, low maintenance, low purchase price, decent comfort and features. It’s fine that you don’t want a Ferrari, or an F150, or a Hellcat, or any other specialized vehicle.
Agree 100%. I can drive anything I like, and I like this kind of car best. New cars are in absurd overkill mode. They're amazing, but idiotic. In my humble opinion.
These are literal commuter cars bro 😂. When I bought my Corolla it was because of the MPG not the design or speed of it.
Current owner of a 2020 Sentra SR premium package. Nothing against Toyota, but Nissan really did a good job on the 2020 refresh.
I hear you, I do like the interior but honestly the Nissan Sentra has lost its soul from the late 90s pocket rocket version of the Sentra SE-R spec v. I had a buddy that had one and it was great! 2.4 l 4 cylinder with a 6-speed manual. Super fun
I agree. I just bought a 2021 Sentra sr and it’s beautiful. The new body of the Sentra looks amazing. The Corolla looks too small

Just finished a 700+ mile week in a rented 2021 Sentra SV and I am impressed by this car. I am a Mini Cooper enthusiastic with many days at the track with my 6spd manual Cooper S. Was expecting this rental to be a dog. WRONG! This beauty took me down the brutal length of the Cal I-5 through the agricultural heart of Calif: semi's, trucks, flatbeds. The CVT tranny is slick, shifts are smooth and quick and the 4 cyl. engine is happy to rev to redline. Moves out smartly when you goose it. I thought it was a turbo! Fooled me. Great, supple suspension, excellent handling, all-around A+ for highway manners and in the twisties.
Even in the SV config, cabin feels upscale. Materials rival the BMW-made Mini Cooper.
Don't think Corolla can match this.
No question for me -- Corolla. I like the looks and the 6-speed manual.
Yeah exactly, and I think the reviewer seems a bit bias against Toyota for some reason. Also what he didn't address was Toyota's hold their value. My Corolla right now is worth more than what I paid for it. I got basically this exact model but the 2020 version for $17,000 and some change out the door. Hard to beat that

By coincidence, our rental car in Albuquerque was a new Nissan Sentra and we were totally surprised at how shockingly wonderful it was. This is not the same dumpy, goofy, generic econobox the previous car was. This new Sentra is fun, easy to drive and has premium looks. We've been driving it everywhere between Santa Fe and Albuquerque while on vacation, and it put a smile on your face with every twisty turn. That is the best thing you can say about car ... how good it makes you feel. What this car lacks is one thing: horsepower. But, it is still a home run for Nissan. If it had a 170 or 180 hp engine, it would be grand slam.
The sentra is my choice based on interior looks alone🙌. Had a sentra before and I loved it a good easy to maintain car that got good fuel economy. Nissan is killing the designs. If this was the SR trim it would look sleek on the outside
I drive a 2020 a Corolla SE in the same color blue. I purchased it in sept 2020 and it was prior to the car shortage. After haggled I was able to get the SE for just under 20k out the door. For that price I’d take it all day over Sentra only because I feel t will last longer and it felt more solid over bumps and rough roads. CVT is fine, 42 MPG is easy to get at 75mph or under. Would get manual if not in city. I must give the Sentra the interior win by far.
Sentra definitely more stylish. That big grill covered with a black metal fencing in the Corrolla is doing nothing for me.
I myself own a Sentra... ❤️ Good job done Nissan to give it a refresh... Interior is outclass & so is the interior space....!!!
Well this was more like a redesign and the refresh will come around 2024...
in 15 years , Sentra will be in the junkyard being sold for parts while Corolla is just being broken in and getting modified with lots accessories , engines, lights, seats , etc.
I agree, that's why they call Nissans disposable cars with a crap CVT. Don't get that reputation without reason.
Bought a 21 Corolla SE 6 MT and it's a whole lot of grin. Not a fast car by any means, but man you get a lot for 24K.
I bought the same in Blue Crush Metallic. Sure its not the fastest car but the manual really wakes up the new 2.0 and it is probably the best handling Corolla to date. The cornering assist is absolutely amazing if you push the car enough. Almost no understeer. Just needs better tires from the factory.
You can get leds on the SV trim, I believe it’s part of a lighting package but I’ve seen a couple SV’s on a dealership lot that have had that peanut butter interior and had led headlights with led turn signals
The Nissan Sentra and the Mazda 3 have the best interiors on the segment.
In Canada we have a Sentra sr with 6sp man and it’s amazing
That is exactly the one I wanted in 2020 in that awesome orange color. However, Nissan Canada was adamant on selling the manual transmission only in the most basic version. I bought a manual transmission Corolla SE instead 😄

It’s interesting how a lot of people are looking and Judging the interior I would choose the Corolla all day long forget the Nissan Sentra. overall the Corolla is the better car no question Nissan put all the money in the interior and cut corners all around the rest of the car. The value of these cars won’t be the same in years and I know that nissan will def be headed to the shop. The headlight and tail lights looks cheap in the nissan straight up. I won’t be fooled by the nissan
Great review! I was leaning Sentra SV for this interior specifically.
I love my 2003 Corolla, almost 20 years old and not a spot of rust even living in New York by the bay and with tons of snow and salted roads, also i daily drive it and theres not a warning light to be seen on the dash, minimum maintenance , brakes, oil changes, ect and even the interior still looks new. The next car i buy will be another Toyota product
I still prefer the Corolla 100% over the Sentra for reliability reasons, but damn Nissan definitely stepped their game up!
I would choose the Sentra in this comparison. Mainly because of the feature content and interior. I doubt you will see a Nizmo version of the Sentra. Hot rodding a CVT transmission is not likely to happen. That being said, I do like a CVT transmission in most driving situations. If you don’t plant your foot to the floor, you can reach a middle ground where you get both a satisfying engine rev climb at the same time as the transmission is upshifting the gear ratio. It’s actually a pretty satisfying sound in that the engine is not howling as you smartly accelerate because your using midrange torque instead of high end horsepower. It’s also a lot quieter.
Sentra is an amazing value but I'd go Corolla just because the thing will probably run no matter how much its been abused or neglected.
Unless someone is going to buy a Corolla (or any car for that matter) brand new and keep it 10+ years, or buy it 10+ years old second-hand, then projected reliability shouldn't be a deciding factor at all. Never understood new car buyers who make purchases based mainly on a perceived reliability advantage, who don't keep the car long enough for reliability to even come into play (which accounts for many new car buyers).
@@Stressless2023 Perceived reliability also helps resale value. So even if you don't keep your car for long, it makes sense to buy a more reliable vehicle.
@@braetonwilson4296 Hmmm I actually could agree with that standpoint... Although unless my choices were between a new Camry and whatever the worst vehicle in the segment is for retaining resale value (a Camry versus a Malibu for example), then I still couldn't imagine wanting to put up with a lackluster vehicle simply to potentially have a couple thousand bucks extra in my pocket 5-7 years down the road when it's time to sell or trade. I just bought my 1st sedan! A Fusion. I traded an older Escape. Only once could I not get something in the trunk, but it did fit on the rear seat. There will be a few times I miss the SUV hauling but in daily use the trunk lid is so light and easier to deal with than a hatch. Plus sedans ride lower and feel better on the road IMO.
I completely agree Christine! Sedans are lighter with a lower center of gravity than SUVs so they're much more fun to drive! Better fuel economy, better handling, better ride quality, and just plain easier to drive and park! Plus, sedan trunks can be very spacious.
The only advantage of SUVs I can see is that very overweight or very old people can get in and out more easily.

At 11:30 I want to say that I personally prefer the Nissans button feature, because I can press it once and it will open the drivers door, when I press it twice it will open all of the cars doors. Which Toyota does not. With Toyota you have to use the key fob to unlock all of the doors at once, unless you use the interior buttons after opening your drivers door and having your passengers wait on you while you do that.

I know this segment is under pressure, but the streets of my city (Vancouver, Canada) are crowded with Corollas, Sentras, Civics, and their VW, KIA, Hyundai, and Chevy peers. Making these cars still seems to be a very healthy way to make money. They're practical vehicles that get you from point A to point B. The alternative for many is the fairly robust mass transit system.
I actually prefer cloth seats to leather. I hate leather furniture. But I'm weird. I also would choose any model with a manual transmission over any of the automatics.
I wish you'd had a Civic and Mazda 3 here to compare all four major Japanese small commuter cars at once.
I'd prefer vinyl to cloth seats for the simple reason of any accidental liquid spills not being quickly absorbed into the seat cushions.
I agree with everything you said. I prefer cloth as well. My Miata has cloth and it’s excellent. Super hot if you have heated seats during the winter and nice and cool during the warmer months.
Nissan for me, Nissan user here since 1993. Thank you!
Love your review. Great job comparing two relatively different vehicles on a balanced scale.
Just spent a week in a brand new Sentra with 700 miles on the ODO in Florida. It had a nice ride, and handled pretty well, but the engine felt weak, and the road noise on the highway was deafening. It felt like a design from 15 years ago. PS: a CVT like this is why people hate CVTs. PS: the interior on the base level does not look like the example in this vid, nor does the entry-level touch screen which was much smaller, not a glass front, but cheap plastic, and nowhere near as bright and clear. It's nice there was a touch screen and connectivity at all, but it looked like a cheap Kindle from five years ago and there was only ONE USB port and nothing else in the entire car. Not sold on Nissan's value for the money.
I think it's safe to say the Sentras merits lie in the SV trim and above. The base is low rent. But it improves drastically for not much more money.
@@dedreandixon4620 It doesn't improve the power or the transmission. You're paying a lot more for a few more fancy luxuries. Nissan's value doesn't equate. At least in the Toyota, you're getting a bigger engine and an enhanced CVT. Even the Hyundai Elantra is better proposition than this.
@@fp5495 You're forgetting that 75% of buyers in this class will never depress the accelerator more than 50%. Until they decide to make a NISMO, this car is not targeted at enthusiasts. Everyone's perception of value is different, and it seems yours (and my own lol) places a large factor on the power available. But, at less than $26k loaded and very nice interior for the class, the Sentra definitely has a value proposition.
@@dedreandixon4620 I would agree that there is a generation out there that may never know the difference because it's their first experience with a car, but it's not about enthusiasm, it's about effortless operation; a sense of positive motion without frustration. You couldn't get away with light throttle in the Sentra, it's that incredibly slow off the line. I had to mash the pedal to the floor and redline it in order to get the transmission to simulate gear changes, and even then they were mushy weak transitions. If not provoked like that, the CVT just hung out in one droning speed like CVTs of yore. I mean, Nissan was probably the first company that made CVTs mainstream, they had the most experience in their products and yet, the rest of the industry who utilizes CVTs seems to have beat them at their own game. I've driven a Corolla with a CVT up the entire California coast, and I never felt wanting for better forward motion. For an economy car, it satisfied the general sense of speed in its category. And that wasn't even at sea level like I was in Florida no less.
Did the Corolla actually ditch the torsion beam suspension for independent rear end suspension?
Wouldn't get either of them if I was looking for a sedan but if in a horrible world. I'd pic the sentra because of the styling and that interior your demo has
If I hear "...this is soft-touch material..." one more time I'm going to scream. The fact is, in economy cars, you want practicality. That means easy to clean, long lasting materials. This means you want hard surfaces on top of the dash and on top of the car doors where you don't touch. You also want incandescent signal/marker lights that are long lasting, cheap and easy to change yourself. And praise the good Lord to grant wisdom to car manufacturers to stop putting carpet into cars. Do you ever put carpet in the mud room or in the vestibule? So why do you put carpet in car floor? One more thing: You want smaller rim sizes with taller tires for better comfort and cheaper tires. Mr. Bey, please give a thought to us practical minded sorts.
Unless you’re leasing and plan on giving it back in 24 months, you’ve got to consider the company, which makes the choice very easy.
I noticed the Sentra has rear seatbelt sensors, which my 2019 Altima Platinum doesn't have. Strange exclusion / inclusion
Definitely rolling with the corolla on this
Your verdict is spot on. The new sentra is much better value and more desirable in many ways. Even the promise of better reliability cannot convince me to buy this corolla as i could never live with its uninspiring styling.
I don't want a crossover. Glad some companies are staying in the segment. I'd take the Corolla too.
Sofyan...am I able to get the Sentra SV interior in a black or dark gray leather?

@@Natethegreat200c He's correct too. Look at the massive amounts of lawsuits against Nissan for the CVTs. You're welcome 👍🏼
Both cars look good but to me the Sentra takes the nod. The Corolla is a bit overstyled. The Sentra's lines are much cleaner and blend in well. The interior looks much more upscale as well, a departure from past Sentras. The Corolla's interior looks amazingly horrible. I only wish they gave the Sentra more than 149 hp. I think 180 hp would be perfect.
Is the Black top available in the This trim on the Sentra?
I've had 4 Corollas since 2009. My first was a 2009 and I bought it because I was in a bad financial position and I needed cheap, reliable transport. I don't like the way the Sentra drives. The steering feedback is off-putting, the engine noise is very loud and I wasn't impressed with the overall quality.
Is my Corolla perfect? Nope. It's gutless on the freeway, the CVT is...well, it's better than they used to be but it's still bad and the lack of storage spaces is a bummer. But I love how it drives, it's very comfortable and like every other Toyota, they design it so stuff is where you'd expect it to be. Reliable, dependable and familiar.
2021 Corolla SE looks way sexier and more attractive than the 2021 Nissan Sentra SV. Plus the Corolla has a Lexus engine and a Lexus CVT, borrowed from the 2021 Lexus UX 200. I would choose the Corolla.
