In 60 years of ropework, I have never used the second knot. By introducing more bends in the rope it weakens the rope and offers no counterbalancing improvement. The three most useful knots in everyday life are the square knot, the bowline and the clove hitch.
I ran across a retired trucker that I didn't know how many years he was a trucker but, he wanted to secure a load with a rope. Long hesitation so, I took the rope, trucker's hitch, loop, pass the byte through, end around secure point, end through byte, draw it up, 2 half hitches. He was amazed, never seen that before! I don't know if he was goofing on me but, he sold it. How can a trucker not know a trucker's hitch? There ought to be a law!
I do wish you would give the names of the knots. Your channel appeared in my feed, I don't know why or how, but I always wish I knew more knots and what makes your method work for me is that the camera position makes your right hand the same side as my right hand. I'm right-left dyslexic and I can't face someone and understand what they are doing, I need to be in the same plane as they are. Good work, thanks!
Knot #1 looks like a square knot, but you can't tell because you can't see the running ends. If the running ends are on the same side, then it's a square knot. If they are kiddie corner (diagonal from each other), then the knot will untie itself under a load. The littthings are important for safety.
Knot 1 would never be tied in that manner for everyday life. Can't tie anything like that while under load, like trash bag ties. Knot 2 is not a bowline so it's is bumped from everyday life.
Yes! As far as the title of the video, if you wanted to teach the single most useful knot, you would teach the bowline. The bowline is the Lord King of all Knots.
If I had to teach someone one and only one knot with which to tie two pieces of rope to each other, it would not be either one of these knots. I would teach a becket bend.
I have seen the first knot a ton of times, and yet when I find myself somewhere with two lines to put together, I can never conjure it. Clearly I need to practice it until it is muscle memory.
The way I remember it is to simply tie an overhand using right over left and then another overhand only this time left over right. When you sung it up it is a perfect square knot (the first knot).
Essentially a square knot, tied with two bends. The second knot wraps twice over the standing part, but is in the same family. I'm sure it's listed in Ashley's somewhere. .Not a bad not, but a barrel knot would be just as good. Still it's a nice pattern. Nice job, simple and strong enough.
Knot? What knot? If you want show me a knot you have to show me the live ends. If you invert live ends you have a different knot, so: I don't know what knot you want to show me.
@@Nikioko Correct. We can't see the free end of the light colored rope so we can't be sure. Another name for a square knot is a "Reef knot". Reef and thief sound a lot alike.

@stratocruising - Those are the three I get the most use out of for sure, especially the bowline. I also regularly use a sheet bend.
Trucker’s hitch
I’d add sheet bend and fender bends as far more useful than those shown.
Question:
I find the square knot will slip on stiffer or slick lines. Isn't there a slight variation that gives a more secure hold?
@@barbeonline351 Sheetbend
Love knots, was a trucker for 45 years and always like learning new ones,my favorite was the carrick bend, thanks. 😎

Very clear video. However, it would be nice to see applications where these knots could be used. Thank you for sharing!
The bowline is still the king of knots. No matter how tight it gets, you can still untie it.

I invent a new knot every day it seems. None of them can be untied though (smile).

Most used knot in everyday life is the shoelace bow
Which is a square knot, just slipped.
Great rope work

Enjoyed the video.

Ilmu yg bermanfaat thanks
1:08 the 2nd knot looks like a variation on a sheet bend
Never found a use for either one of those. Add the bowline & there would be 3 I would avoid completely.
¡ Las dos cuerdas están fatigadas !
What is the advantage of the second knot?
nothing
You almost did the sheet bend. Look for it, does what these seem to do

1st is a square knot. 2nd is a hitch, it will only hold under tension and you can't untie it when it's under tension, unlike a knot.
But, yah have to pull out both ends! That’s berry funny. What about a knot with two ropes, pulling apart just one end of each rope
Teşekkürler selamlar sağolasın kardeşim
The first one is a square knot , kind of a very popular not very good knot , a sheet bend is much better and easier
A square knot is a fine knot. It's not a good bend.

zeppelin bend for me. Takes a bit of practise to learn, but once you have it it's awesome
The most used knot is the one to tie your shoes and sneakers
I have seen the first knot a ton of times, and yet when I find myself somewhere with two lines to put together, I can never conjure it. Clearly I need to practice it until it is muscle memory.
It doesn't matter how many times you practice tying a knot. Unless you're using them regularly, you'll forget 99% of them.
The way I remember it is to simply tie an overhand using right over left and then another overhand only this time left over right. When you sung it up it is a perfect square knot (the first knot).
Well, don't tie it the way he did. Just remember left over right, right over left. It's the way you tie your shoes, but without the bows.
Most used for what?
Most used knot is the trackers knot.
Will that work with fishing lines?
Nope
Great
Thank you bro🙏
( I guess those are the square knots, or double square knot , I have used them!)
Good

The first knot is not reliable at all and can even be dangerous when tied mistakenly with loose ends put diagonally.
thumb knot and a bow , ,,, must be the two most used knots every day

1st knot was a square knot.. what's the name of the 2nd knot?? Info pls tnx.
The first knot is either a square knot or a thief knot. Depending on whether the loose ends are on the same or opposite side of the knot.
Not really an effective knot tutorial without the names.
Double square knot?
