  • Hey guys,
    as requested by a lovely viewer, I am talking about high school dress codes today. When I became an exchange student in the US, I was definitely not aware of all of the items of clothing that were prohibited by the school rules. So I am hoping that I can give you a heads up and let you know which things to pack in your suitcase and which items to leave at home.
    In case you have any questions about exchange years or any videos you would like to see me do on the topic, please leave them down in the comments below.
    Lots of love,
    Laura

    Trench coat thing goes back to the Columbine and two High School massacres where the guys hid guns, pipe bombs, and such under their long coats. It's a look suggestive of radical behavior, almost an Old West "stand off" fighting look. The trench coat "mafia" look goes back to the 1920's in the US where it was a look for gangsters and the guns they hid under those coats. Whether it's 1999 (Columbine) or 1929 (NY mafia) or 1869 (Old West) the trench coat look still carries sinister, gang connotations for many Americans - and certainly the rule makers.

    Lucky you!
    It vary from district to district.
    At my school there was REALLY strict dress code:
    - solid color polo with collar and buttons, no logos
    - khaki/black/navy pants, no jeans allowed
    - belt required
    - shirt tucked in
    - you can't wear hoodies, only jackets with no logo
    - closed toe shoes
    Did you go to public or private school?

    • @honey27003
      @honey27003  Před 3 lety +5

      Wow okay and I thought mine was strict! That would realy have been a massive change from me considering I had never had a dress code before in my life. The high school I went to was a public school. Was your high school a private school?

    • @leacernikova7786
      @leacernikova7786 Před 3 lety +1

      @@honey27003 No it was public school. Me either, there is no dress code in my home country. Do you prefer dress code or you consider it as useless?

    • @honey27003
      @honey27003  Před 3 lety +1

      @@leacernikova7786 I think it is good to teach children to dress somewhat appropriately when they go to school. I think that shorts that expose half of your bottom and PJ pants do not belong in school. However, I am against prohibiting things like tank tops. I also find the hair thing problematic as everyone should get to choose how they want to wear their hair. That´s just how I grew up. I also feel like maybe it´s the parents´ or the teachers´ responsibility to let the child know. I don´t think it has to be in a rulebook. It´s just kind of common sense. What do you think?

    • @leacernikova7786
      @leacernikova7786 Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah I agree. But it is sometimes difficult without rule book, as some students do not want to follow anything. For example at my homeschool teacher sometimes ask some students "not to wear it" but they do not care as it isn t in rule book. What I see as a problem with dress code - wasn t it sometimes difficult to find clothes that match all dress code rules? Did you also have dress code checks?

    • @honey27003
      @honey27003  Před 3 lety +1

      @@leacernikova7786 It was difficult because I wasn´t even aware that there would be a dress code so I had all the wrong stuff in my suitcase. It took me a few weeks to realize that certain things weren´t allowed to be worn in school. They would have a box of huge, ugly clothes to put on over your clothes if they weren´t appropriate but luckily I never had to put any of those on

    are there rules about hoodies or socks? And is there a different dresscode for hot days/ what would you wear to sport and P.E?

    • @honey27003
      @honey27003  Před 3 lety +1

      Great questions! It is best to check the dress code you can find on the website of the exact high school you are going to. For my high school there were no rules about socks. Concerning hoodies they did not allow you to wear the hood up on your head and you have to watch out for the print. No guns, swear words or depictions of violence (including hard rock band tees etc.). There is no difference in dress code for hot and cold days since the U.S. has air conditioning in pretty much all buildings so it´s always the same temperature. As a girl, I would suggest wearing the Nike shorts I showed in my what to pack video and a large T-shirt (most girl wore commercial T-Shirts from restaurants or school T-shirts). We had to wear school colors to work out in but that might be different for every school.

      Yes, I heard about that. There is this ungoing debate not just in U.S. high schools but in the world about women´s bodies making men trip and unable to concentrate. I don´t subscribe to this view since I was never raised in that way. However, if you go to a conservative country or state you will encounter this a lot

    What is the point with dress code?

    • @honey27003
      @honey27003  Před 2 lety

      Very good question. I guess it is a cultural thing. Especially in the South, people are very conservative and religious and they are very focused on what they deem appropriate clothing. To me it's less about clothing and more about general behavior like kindness and willingness to learn. But they take it very seriously

    • @petermiller1003
      @petermiller1003 Před rokem

      Sometimes, it's the detail. For example: the named "5-pocket-jeans". What happens, if an exchange student comes in with a 4-pocket-jeans from his/her home country? Does the missing pocket makes him/her untidy or naked? No! And to insist to this rule would be something I call stupid and ridicoulous. It's enough to say: "wear a jeans". The number of pockets is completely unimportant.
      I fully agree that people should be dressed good and proper. No question.
