My final college art tutor pushed me towards oil painting after a whole afternoon of observing me with acrylics. I was VERY intimidated and if I'm honest, a bit disinterested. I was a dumber kid than I thought. I tried it like she asked and was hooked so fast. All my final pieces were in oils and that was the first time someone asked to buy a painting of mine. They offered £60, but the piece was of sentimental value to my mother so it hangs proudly in her home now. I want to really get good at oil painting but had to do a lot of finding my own way until now so your channel is a god-send. You are knowledgeable, charismatic and kind. 2 videos in and once again, I'm hooked. New sub! Nice to meet you! And thank you for your content! Xx
I've been working with acrylics for a long time but the oils have been calling me. I've watched only 2 of your videos and now I think I'm ready to take a shot at it! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent example. Truly. I've watched many videos, and other than legends like "Draw Mix Paint" and "Florent Farges", this is a very clear and concise tutorial.
With that being said: I utilize multiple layers of 2 mediums, and one solvent. Using dropper bottles with pre-mixed solvent and medium proportions is invaluable.
Here are my layers broken apart by relative proportions. Other than mixing two mediums in the same painting (taboo generally), it works very well for me. Allow each layer to dry by touch. Allow 6 months after the final layer to fully dry:
- Canvas
- Gesso (3 layers and give time for each layer to fully dry)
- Acrylic paints (optional)
- Solvent (Gamsol works well)
- Solvent + Liquin (Liquin is like Galkyd)
- Liquin alone (Or mostly Liquin)
- Tube Paint alone
- Solvent + Stand Linseed Oil
- Mostly Stand Linseed Oil (and a little Solvent)
- Linseed Oil alone mixed with tube paint
When fully dry (about 6 months), apply a final layer of clear Varnish and let it fully dry. It's important to wait the 6 months, otherwise the under paint will continue to dry, shrinking, thus warping the painting under long dried Varnish layer.
Mind you, you can limit your painting to just 3 layers (or 1 if you're inclined), but if you like working in multiple layers, and you have the patience and portion control to remember everything, then the above is a good layout for the most extreme example of using fat over lean.
I'm most definitely intimidated with oil paints! I am forever amazed at what you create. Thanks for sharing your experience and advice 💕
me too! I've been dabbling with acrylic for a few years, watch her stuff for inspiration but maybe this video will give me the push to try oils, maybe when I get some money lol. her talent is incredible! if she paid for video lessons I would buy hehe.
+s731s I really love working with acrylics! But I am again to have a go with oils again. I tried once many years ago but really should give it another chance. Yessss lessons from Lena would be great! 😊
Chloe Rose Art 😊☝
Chloe, did you think of trying water soluble oils as a jumping on point? I bonds with water, and the oils can be used with acrylic or oil mediums (or just water). If it's good enough for Camilla d'Errico, trust me, it's really, really good! :D
Chloe :D 💕
Wow, you did it so smoothly I almost felt like even I could do it.
You can:)
I painted with acrylics in the past, but living in the desert it dried soooo fast-too fast. Not enjoyable having to rush. I don't like to hurry when painting. I want b to enjoy the orocess. So I decided to try oils. Watched a couple vids and just went for it. Oh my gosh I instantly fell in love with oils. I immediately understood why painters love oils, that buttery feeling of the paint and enjoying the process. Not being forced to rush. It was my first portraiture and my first oil painting. It turned out awesome fur my 1st attempt and it didn't take months to dry or cure. Oils cure. Acrylics dry. Since I have tons of acrylics left I played around with mixing 2 mediums and it was better, similar to painting with oils, but not quite as wonderful. I'm so glad I've tried oils and will be using them more. They are awesome. If you don't leave your mediums open you are safe with using them. I mean you put such a tiny amount on your palette that I'm not sure why people worry. The actual oil paints are not toxic at all. It's wiring about breathing a bunch of medium, but n you don't of you use them correctly. Also, people forget there is toxicity in acrylics as well. I see people put their hands in acrylics, blend it on their paintings with their hands with no gloves and some of those colors are toxic. If you useoil mediums responsibly there is nothing to fear. Give oil painting a try. If you fear the tiny amount of oils mediums , use water mixable oils. I think you will like it.
Based on her eyeliner I can tell already she is way more talented than I can ever be
You’re as talented as you allow yourself to be
Wow that was fantastic. You are one of the few painters who actually explain your process for beginners!!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!!!
I bought a oil kit and knew nothing about mediums and solvents, I thought the oil paint itself was the medium.
I'll try to manage.
CBA dear please like an sub my channel
I like yours back
Thanks😍
Same tho. I know this comment is old but struggles
Hahaha i did the same thing
CBA i have water mixable oils. I use water as a medium. It kinda works like watery acrylics.
Sameee. I bought the paints and then saw a video which was like "lalala paint thinner" and I was like... *oH*
I'm a watercolor painter, but I've recently wanted to switch to oil painting (Bob Ross inspired me). I've tried oil painting years ago and it was so intimidating that I stopped before I even got the chance to really give it a try. I just want to thank you for taking your time to explain and simplify the basics of oil paints. You've truly boosted my spirits and given me such excitement to begin my oil painting journey! Thanks again 🌸
you mentioned several times that Galkyd "increases the drying time" when in fact it 'decreases' the drying time by accelerating it; which means it decreases the amount it takes the paint to dry.
I usually phrase it as "speeds up" the drying time but WOOPS! not sure why I made that error, thanks for bringing that to my attention!
i know... sometimes it's confusing. lol
thank you for this, i was so confused why you'd want to slow oil paint.
Janet Garcia Hi Janet, is Galkyd the same as Liquin? I'm from the UK and wondered if it was called something different in the US. Thank you :)
There you go again; always critical. Are you a English teacher? I guess would guess that you feel very inferior.
Ok. Now you feel good about yourself.
The kid screaming in the back, I died!! Hahahahahahaha!!! 😂 also YASSS PREACH painting should create love and learning in us and not fear or anxiety! That's why I love it. I always just try to do my best for me. This is why people need to watch Bob Ross hahaha I swear! All that anxiety just melts and then he shows you his adorable animals he rescues. I mean c'mon!!! 🐰🐦🐣🐗🐁🐶🐹
there we go a Bob Ross fan! I haven't noticed her mention him and sometimes I kind of wish she did. you know, like maybe paint in memory or as a tribute for his his birthday... or for no reason just cause :)
haha i love Bob Ross! :] ❤❤❤
I mentioned him a few years back in my "teaching yourself how to paint" video, he's amazing!!
Lena Danya omg you replied gah! So glad you know him and love him, definitely gonna check out that video 😇👍💖
I've watched so many videos trying to learn. 😵💫 This is one of the most straight forward, easiest to follow one's that I've seen. Thnx
God, girl! You are so beautiful!!! Don't take it wrong, I'm a grandmother! Good luck!
wow really
Even if you were a man her age I dont see the problem with your observation.
My grandma, what good eyes you have.
Perfect! That makes more sense. Beautiful flower.
she should have so much more subs than this, been watching for yrs and even though I mess around from time to time w/ acrylics, I still love to watch!!!
I appreciate the way she doesn't yap, gets straight to the point and in a simple, informative and easy to understand manner, also all the work she puts in, not only in her art? but her videos!! the perfect lighting, sound, camera angles, music, edits, just one of the best youtubers out there painter or not 💖
I appreciate you saying "take it easy". I've never painted with oil, and I don't think I was gonna start, until you said that.
Clearly and beautifully explained. You are a natural teacher.
I have seen many videos on CZcams...... But never got fully knowledge on how to make paint flow much smoothly on canvas.....and just by watching your this video all of my doubts are clear at once and now feeling much confident doing oil Painting.....Your style of representing information is great....👍👍👍👍
I expect nothing else than masterpiece from my first painting. You have to set high goals.
Haha :-)
Me too.
I would love to see your abstract masterpiece then 😂
so far my 1st oil painting is...
Thanks Lena. Great video and beautiful painting. I would love to watch and learn more from your other videos too.
Thanks. I enjoy your channel. Seeing different techniques other than the classes I took years ago is inspiring. Can't wait to see more.
Thank you Leena....Wonderful demonstration !!
this is do inspiring Lena. .love what you paint
This video was very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to explain layering and especially how to mix mediums to avoid cracking and long drying times. Please produce more!!!
Great lesson and a beautiful little painting! Well done!
I love your educational approach, your openness and encouragement for the 'beginner' as well as reiterating that yours is one of many styles, encouraging people to have a look at other's processes out there. Very open minded, genuine and helpful as well. Thank you. :)
Lena!! I have always been so inspired by artwork but I've never been "talented" at it. But you give me confidence and make me want to practice until I'm at least decent at it! Thank you so much for your videos and inspiration!
Well done , fab picture and excellent instructions X
So talented! Amazing.
Beautiful Rose! I love the side-ish angle. Must learn how to draw that!
Lovely painting! this covers a lot of information that is not covered in other videos, and has given me the courage to break out those oil paints and give them another whirl! thanks for this!
ive been looking for 3 hours for a video to show how to mix the ratios for fat over lean and finally found your video. thank you for showing and explaining it the way you did it was verry helpful. again thank you.
I have been diddling with oil painting off and on, since I was about 10 years old. I'm 75 now and have bought brushes and an inexpensive set of oil paints. I thought I would try it again. I'm on a very limited budget, so I'm going to try painting on some old pieces of paneling that came from some cupboard doors. I thought I would give them a coat of white to seal them and make it more like canvass. I really enjoyed your video. I learned a lot. I have never had any lessons and only used linseed oil to thin the paints. That doesn't speed up the drying at all as far as I can see, so I will get some of the products you have shown and give them a try.
Thanks for making this! It's always insightful to see other artists' processes 😊
Thanks for watching darling! :] ♥
You are awesome Lena!!!! ~Marcus

HEY PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL I POST PAINTING TIME LAPSES
You are amazing, loved your color theory video as well. Please share more of this basic videos.
At the end of every video I get real anxious and nervous. I'm really glad you always say something sweet to remind us to enjoy it because I need it
I used to be really interested in painting with acrylics but always found the paint dried too quickly and wasn't happy with my paintings. I'm really interested in oil pain now! Your videos have been beyond helpful! Thank you so much.
Oh thank god! Very helpful, I'm so relieved! Watching you explain the mediums and seeing you actually mix them and apply it to the painting (which is simply beautiful by-the-way!) is so helpful, it solidifies what you mean by fat over lean, so thank you.
Mediums kind of intimidate me and this video was so helpful, thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this video! You've recently inspired me to move from watercolours to oils (which I was originally quite nervous to do) and I love them so much! Thank you for being so amazing!!!
Thank you for this. The demonstration of fat over lean was much easier to understand and I feel a lot more comfortable trying to make the switch from acrylics.
Thank you for this video. Didn't know about Galkyd, but will definitely try it.
Lena thank you sooooo much for these videos! I just discovered you looking on how to start oil painting and after feeling sooo intimidated, now I'm EXCITED. Thank you for this content, REALLY!!!
Beautiful painting and just the info I needed to get started. Thanks for the great video!
Hi Lena!! I just wanted to thank you for making these videos it really helped me because i'm a beginner and I was so lost! you're a true artist, I love you!!!
You do a terrific job of explaining concepts and techniques! Thumbs up and subscribed. Thank you!
These videos are so helpful! Your work always mesmerizes and inspires me. As a fellow artist I have learned so much from what you have to say. Thank you so much Lena!
I think this is exactly what I needed. I haven't really started with oil painting yet, just wanted to look around the internet for some tips and all that. I've seen many different videos and read a lot but I think you have explained it a lot better than the others I have seen. I'm still very nervous about starting but I think this will be a lot of fun to do, so thank you for the tips
I found the answer to my question in this video after I wrote it on one of your old videos. Was trying to find a solution that speeds up the drying time in oil paintings. I was like yay when you said the product that helps oil paintings dry in 24 hours or less. Ain't nobody got time for waiting for 6 months to a year for it to dry.
I googled a few videos for tutorials and your's was the most easy to listen to Lena. The way you demonstrated and talked were most delightful to learn by. Thank you for your charming presentation! Most helpful.
Thank you for these videos. I feel more confident as a new oil painter because of your step by step help.
Nice, concise explanation and demonstration. thanks!
Thank you for sharing from your experiences. I've just watched several of your videos & I'm actually encouraged to play with the oil paints my husband bought me for Christmas. I hate the say it, but I wasn't very excited about them. My usual hobby is watercolor painting. I love watercolors & find it relaxing the paint with them. Oils just seemed so intimidating. Since art for me is what I do for fun, I wasn't exited at all to begin. It felt more like I was obligated to try painting with them because they were a gift, but I want excited about it at all. It was kind of stressing me out. After watching some of your videos, I've not only picked up on some useful tips, but you have been inspired me to get started.
Your explanations were so awesome....demonstrations helped a lot with understanding how to use the fat over lean method. Your video is very appreciated!
Thank you so very much. I wasn't even aware of this layering system. I am just starting with oils. I heard and read other things about layering, but your clip demonstrates it thoroughly and clearly. Sara :D
Lovely tutorial, thank you for your tips. I am going to try oil paints for the first time. You are really talented and beautiful too!!
Thank you, thank you. Finally someone who knows how to make painting with oil very clear. This video clarified what I have been searching for in the mixing of the paints with the mediums and what to expect with those mediums. So many of the videos on You Tube just shows a master artist demonstrating their skill without saying anything about the mediums or even the colors they are using. Keep up the good work. I look forward to watching your other videos. God Bless. Linda
That is so wonderfully generous. Very helpful video. And beautiful painting too. 👧💙😊 Thank u Lena.
you're so awesome Lena!
Gosh you are such a beautiful and generous person! Thank you for this. I always have worked with acrylics because they are so forgiving and I am self taught. I love love your work!
Im glad that you give us tips and tricks to apply to our own artwork. Yours is beautiful and i appreciate the help
Your videos are so useful especially for artists like me who aren't that used to paint.. Tnx soo much! 💖
thank you lena for your tutorials, much needed help. I am a beginner oil painter and have not been really happy with my paintings, except a couple where I followed along with bob ross, or the like. Keep up the good work.
Great video, very easy to follow. Thank you!
you're a great speaker! Great information you're sharing, thank you
Thank you for sharing so much of your time! You are a Great Artist!
Love your humility
Love you and Your Drawing!
I’ve had trouble finding good videos to follow to get into oil painting. I discovered your channel a few days ago and it’s awesome ! You do really well on video and explaining things. Thanks so much for the good content.
Nice how you approach oil painting...have learned a lot with your way. Thanks Hermosa..
Hope this finds you well. I am just starting out and I really love your approach, so much different than Ross and Dranitsin and others like them. Stay healthy.
I just tried painting this! Thanks for the lessons that you put up; your painting looks beautiful btw
This was super helpful! I've always been intimated by oil paints because I primarily draw but now I am definitely inspired to try it🌹
Thank you so much! This was very helpful! I’m new to painting! Really enjoying learning all these techniques 🙏🏽 x
You are fr awesome. I fell in love with painting while watching you and I started my art channel.
I swear..... it’s so real it’s unreal! I’m so envious! I’m just starting and so irritated with myself! I know I have to practice. Thank you for all the help!!!❤️
This was so helpful! Thank you so much, you are so talented!

Beautiful flower, thanks for the help.
Very beautiful!
FINALLY! A video that truly breaks down the medium/thinner/layer process! I bought like 5 different oil painting books that didnt help at all in this process. thank you so much for this video!
It's nice Informative Demo. Thanks a lot Lena.
wow!! Thanks!!! I have searched so many videos, most of them were good but I felt you have made it way more easier for us! ... Thanks... And nice work :)
Love ur creativity
I loved the way you explained and I subscribed to your channel right away. I've never tried painting before but I must admit that I'll start soon. Thanks a lot. God bless you.
Very clear and helpful, thank you!
You're so good! I have painted with acrylic, watercolors and pastels and all those are kind of "ready" techniques compared to oils so I'm excited and a little bit scared to try them but I will, hopefully I will feel at least half as much passion as you do for oil paints 😊
Lena, I have done some pencil protraits in the past, never oil, simply because I was scared and unfamiliar with oils I didn't want to mess up. You words of inspiration to just have fun with it has inspired me to move forward a simply familiarize myself with oils. Thank you I will been looking forward to developing my skills through your videos.
Thanks Lena! You're a sweetheart!
I found it very interesting and helpful. Thank you very much for sharing.
I love the steps,, it's clearly convey.

Thank you so much for your videos! It’s so helpful for beginners like me! I feel so intimated starting oil painting but your words of encouragement help a lot. I feel hard on myself with my first 2 paintings, but like you said Im going to take it easy and not expect too much from myself as a beginner. It can be so intimidating constantly seeing other artists work being so amazing and detailed it’s hard to not feel pressure 😂 but I guess we all start somewhere
very very great and so so beautiful painting
The sound in your videos is really nice
Wow your paintings are very beautiful
Thank you so much Lena! I just discovered your channel and subscribed. You are soooo helpful, I was always confused when it came to oils ( especially the base layer with the values) this has helped tremendously, especially since I have always wanted to use oils.
