RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.
RE: LIVE VERSIONS vs STUDIO:
Check out why we haven't uploaded any live versions... yet. They will be coming, we promise!

#PorcupineTree #StevenWilson #reaction
Steven is the master of song writing. His formula makes its like you have heard the song before even though you havent.
This is the first PT song I ever heard. I saw the CD art on a listening station at the local music store and listened to the whole CD hahah. Wound up buying everything I could find from PT and going home to listen properly. Wow, that was 20 years ago, Time Flies... 😉
Holy. Shit. I actually have the exact same story! I was going through FYE with a girlfriend of mine, and we passed the headphones back and forth for the whole album.
Good pun.
Some of the other gems of PT are:
Buying New Soul
Dark Matter
Mellotron Scratch
Gravity Eyelids
Russia on Ice
The Moon Touches Your Shoulder
Don't Hate Me
Radioactive Toy
Dislocated Day
Moonloop (instrumental)
Sleep of no Dreaming
Sever
Stranger by the Minute
Shesmovedon
Shallow
Halo
Open Car
Glass Arm Shattering
My Ashes
Sleep Together
Normal
The Blind House
I would highly recommend to listen to Buying New Soul first. The keyboard arrangement in the intro is the most soul touching and memorable intro's I have ever listened to. Loving the fact that you guys are continuing your reaction to PT. Please do not stop, ever. Cheers from India. 🇮🇳
Thank you for your suggestions and support!! We have LOTS more to discover by PT so no worries, we won’t be stopping any time soon! :) - Lex
The PT catalogue is so amazing you find hidden gems in every album
I'm just going to join the people who are already suggesting Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Anesthetized.
In the year 2001 I got ''Stupid Dream'' for my birthday. Never heard of the band: Porcupine Tree. However, somehow I kept playing it, and playing it. Saw an add for a live show in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Bought tickets right away and went there with my wife, did not know what to expect. Yet from the first note on - magic! Chris Maitland on drums stole the show first then SW and the rest - how on earth could this band have been under my radar for so long? They completely blew us away. At the merchandise stand I bought No Man- Returning Jesus , apparently a side project (Steven Wilson + Tim Bowness. Please try No Man's ''Truenorth'' from their Shoolyard Ghosts album) Completely different, yet so fantastic, atmospheric, intriguing. Then I discovered he had this whole back catalogue. Started with Ligtbulb Sun. Then I went on Ebay, just to get hold of all the other stuff, there was no CZcams in those days. Think I bought all I could find (Check ''Voyage PT, The complete discography'' 572 + (!) pages). Saw him 40+ times lives in three different countries. Never ever failed to amaze me. I am very happy many people discover his music, it's a most rewarding goldmine and a never ending story. Enjoy, as I enjoy your vibe.
Truenorth is so good
I 💖Porcupine Tree!
NicknLex, all I have to say about this reaction is your so correct when you say anything by Porcupine Tree of Steven Wilson will be great...some are greater than others and to this day I have only heard a few songs that I didn't like and those are from his Voyage 34 album however the first song on the album is fantastic, the other 3 are just not up to PT standards. Other than those, I've liked or loved everything else and that's a rare statement to make for any band, even my favorite band Genesis has its list of stinkers. Keep up the great work!
Yes, more Steven Wilson please!
Believe it or not Steven is in his early 50s and at this point was in his early 30s. Lots of great songs on this album but the big all time hitters are Hatesong and Russia on ice
Some awesome Porcupine Tree
"Even Less"
"Glass Arm Shattering"
"Mellotron Scratch"
"way Out of Here"
"Heart Attack in a Layby"
That freakin bass!! crisp, smooth 10/10
Stay old school! Listen to "always never" or "evenless". No one else goes back that far for these guys!
even less
Good job ! From the same release try Shesmovedon.
Watching your videos, I think Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is a song you'll like a lot. Do a Live version... you'll appreciate it.
I agree
You should try it guys
Definitely the live version...
here are a lot of incredible PT songs, almost all of them are amazing!
Please react to Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Mellotron Scratch, which has a beautiful outro, I personally think that song is criminally underrated.
Anyway, keep reacting to Rush and PT, my two favorite prog rock bands.
Greetings from Mexico!
Saludos paisano!! Gracias por tu apoyo y sugerencias! :) - Lex
Great reaction video guys..... I'm sure whichever PT or Steven Wilson tracks you listen to in future, you will never be disappointed. SW is now in his 50's, but still looks so very young. I think it must be down to his lifestyle, and Nick, your right about the IQ similarity, I think its the specific guitar phrases used on this track are very IQ. Keep up the super content. Cheers Bob.
So glad to see you reacting to some of their older stuff. Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are such great albums and my favorite PT era. Lightbulb Sun began my 20 year love affair with this band.
Yay Porcupine Tree!!!!! I'm definitely looking forward to your Anesthetize reaction, my vote is for the live Tilburg version. It's definitely a moving experience (one of the few live versions I would recommend over the studio version of any song). Take your time and keep diving into the discography first though. In Absentia, Stupid Dream, Fear of a Blank Planet, and Deadwing are all amazing albums with so many tracks I could recommend!
Thank you for the reaction! Try some tunes from the Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream album like, Even Less, Piano Lessons, Pure Narcotic or Stranger By The Minute.
Not the first Porcupine Tree song to recommend.
Yet, I would ALWAYS recommend!
Cannot go wrong. Try The Sound of Muzak from Absentia, or just about any song from that album. Nice job you guys!
You guys are going down the proper rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride.
One of my favourite porcupine tree songs, dark matter or even less I would recommend.
Me too❤
Nice, great rereaction, love Porcupine Tree, Steve Wilson is a prog giant.
For your next Rush reaction, "Bytor and the Snowdog" or "Necromancer", are definitely due, the early tunes need to be visited, "In the end" needs to be added to the bucket list also.
Seeing Nick's emotions stirred on the last couple of songs, he needs a completely new direction, you won't be disappointed!
Been on a Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree kick lately, probably because I'm reading Steven's autobiography. Its all amazing, just can't get enough!❤
When I first dug into Porcupine Tree a couple years ago at a friend's suggestion, I was intrigued but a little bored with the earlier space rock stuff, but Lighbulb Sun was the first album that really got me excited about the band. This and it's sister album, Stupid Dream, sit at an interesting crossroads between their psychedelic 90s output and the heavier sounds of the 2000s.
I have since revised my impressions of the earlier stuff --I'm a lousy first reactor. At this point I love pretty much their whole catalogue, even the quirky first album, and I appreciate the variety.
I forgot how great this album is. Four Chords That Made a Million, Shesmovedon, Hatesong, Russia on Ice, Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth, and Where We Would Be. Can't go wrong with any of these.
'Arriving somewhere but not here' Next!! I Such a mysteriously beautiful track!!
Porcupine Tree are great. 'In Absentia', 'Deadwing' and 'Fear of a Blank Planet' are excellent albums. 'Anesthetize' from 'Blank Planet' has a guitar solo by Alex Lifeson from Rush, and has some superb drumming by the mighty Gavin Harrison. Well worth a reaction video.
This was the first song from the first album i heard from porcupine tree. After that i bought all the albums of them to date
PT - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here... live or album. Perfection! Thanks for the reactions.
This is an awesome album. This song Steven Wilson sings about his childhood when he was sick or something like that.
Another gem by PT. The live version from Warszawa is particularly good. So glad you have discovered and fallen in love with PT/Steven Wilson.
Yeah the live version is even better.
When you talk about popularity, music is very subjective from country to country. I'm very surprised Nick, being from Germany has never heard of Saga. If you look into this band (together for over 40 years!) they had there big hits in the U.S. in late 70's "On the loose" and "Wind Him Up" and just have an abundance of amazing prog music. They could never really break the U.S. market being a Canadian band (toured with Rush) and found their home, mostly in Germany. Anyway, hope you can listen to some of their songs and then react to "conversation" (I've always loved this instrumental tune) You'll be hooked!
Ok so this will be the second time I’ve been introduced to a band that I’d never heard of and I like it. I don’t like progressive for it’s own sake, just done well. If I like it enough to close my eyes and and let my imagination take a trip somewhere, then it’s good music and I’ll probably come back for more. 😎
Yay!!! So glad you liked it! :) - Lex
I am loving your reactions to all my favorite bands. PT, Rush, Maiden, Yes, and Steely Dan, Man this is awesome! Now if you can just hit Jethro Tull it would be awesome. "Locamotive Breath, "Cross Eyed Mary and Teacher are some of Tull's many incredible songs.
Guys you have to listen , Waiting phase one - Stars Die - She's moved on , immediately ! can you hear me ?
Love ❤️ this album...sadly the last with Chris Maitland on 🥁....great reaction guys. PT were really taking off by this point and this was my introduction to the band. I quickly bought the previous album Stupid Dream and was just blown away by how amazing the musicianship was along with the writing. PT quickly became one of my favorite bands. Keep it up 👍 and thx 😊
1967 was a great year! ;-)
Very cool random selection. I love this song.
long time 'tree fan :) i've seen them live a bunch of times and always awesome
Muy buen gusto chicos Saludos desde buenos Aires
Shesmovedon and Russia on Ice are two great tracks off this album.
Love me some PT. Mother and child divided.
I know a lot of PT, but never heard this song. Thanks guys! I love discovering this with you! 😁 Also, is that guitar being played with a slide? And is that Gavin Harrison on drums? Awesome reaction!
It's Chris Maitland on the drums. Gavin became part of PT from the In Absentia album till The Incident. Before In Absentia, it was Chris Maitland for the first 6 studio albums.
Another lovely reaction - Steven Wilson is indeed a genius and bassist Colin Edwin is worthy of a special mention on this song! At the outset, Porcupine Tree's music was more psychedelic than the songs you've listened to so far, so it would be interesting if you checked out one of their early songs to enable you to compare and contrast their initial style. During this psychedelic phase, Steven wrote the remarkable 30+ minute instrumental Voyage 34. But, fear not, I'm not going to suggest that you should react to that! :)
My suggestion for one of their early songs is the wonderful Always Never (czcams.com/video/y9FTJV6lWEE/video.html) from their second album Up The Downstair (1993). At this time, Porcupine Tree was pretty much Steven Wilson playing everything on his own (plus using a drum machine), although Always Never was the first song to feature Colin Edwin. The version I've linked to is a remastered version which saw Gavin Harrison replace the drum machine that the original recording had. Steven also re-recorded some of the vocals (curiously, I thought the vocals on the original version were actually better). Take it from me, you'll love this song! :D
Alternatively, if you're feeling braver and have the time, The Sky Moves Sideways (Part 1) from 1995 (czcams.com/video/590BYwVuC_E/video.html) is an extraordinary 18 minute composition with a number of distinct sections. That album was the first which was fully recorded as a band. The song takes a little bit of time to get going, but it's a glorious atmospheric experience from start to end that deserves to be listened to - it's the kind of song where you lay down, turn off the lights, turn the sound up and let the music wash over you!
Sorry to be such a pest but this is my second time with this request, only because I'm so sure that you'll both fall in love with this song! Here's a couple of old songs I'm almost positive you'll both love. TRAFFIC - "THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS" - Steve Winwood on vocals and written by him as well and then - Blind Faith - Presence of the Lord - with Steve Winwood; as well as Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Rick Grech. They were considered a supergroup! Here's the link for low spark - czcams.com/video/rEZH0t5Yozw/video.html
I've always liked this song. Kind of a slow hypnotic groove. It seems like a mix of musical styles... into I don't know what.
Nice video, guys. Steven Wilson is mad talented, for sure. There is a gorgeous song on the Porcupine Tree 'Deadwing' album called 'Lazarus' that would make a great reaction!
Thanks for the reaction! Agree with all of your comments.Do way out of here next!
Por favor hagan estás reacciones también en español. Está canción es una de mis preferidas de Porcupine Tree.
at some time you will get calls for other SW/PT work like "Routine". When you get around to that, be aware that the song needs a warning. You have been warned! There are several in that category.... again, as always, genius & beautiful.
Did you ever do Yes Sound Chaser? That is good prog to react to.
Steven Wilson is absolutely Golden.
Drummer Gavin Harrison is a force of nature on the same level of Tool’s Danny Carey and dare i say Neil Peart
I don't think Gavin was the drummer on this album, but I'm sure he's probably performed this song live.
You must listen to Ayreon's "Human Equation" live. And Jon Anderson doing "Awaken" live with Tod Mobile.
Nick, ever heard of Dreamscape?
Try out "End of Light."
Some call them the "German Dream Theater."
But, still have their own unique sound ..
Very tasty vocals and guitar ..
Gotta recommend a couple more songs from Steely Dan. "Green Earrings" and "The Boston Rag" are both incredible songs and very deep cuts that not a lot of channels have reacted to which is a shame because I think they're some of Steely Dan's best work. Keep up the amazing reactions! You two are awesome!
Kid Charlemagne would be a go-to song by Steely Dan too.
Thanks for your suggestions and support! :) - Lex
Another Arriving Somewhere But Not Here vote and the song Lazarus is ethereal.
Another great PT tune, love the band. How about these on your long list, ha:
Great Lake Swimmers ( maybe Various Stages or The Talking Wind to start)
Toad the Wet Sprocket ( Fly From Heaven and Crowing are 2 of my faves)
VAST (Touched, Flames, I Don't Have Anything)
Our Lady Peace aka OLP (Is Anybody Out There, Somewhere Out There)
Live, lead singer kills it! (Some great songs by Live: Lightning Crashes, I Alone, Run to the Water, Turn my Head, Overcome, The Dolphin's Cry)
And I call these next 2 bands prog space rock, ha, just how the music makes me trance out, ha! :
Haken
Ozric Tentacles
Both with too many wild, cool songs to even list!
I know that many commenters have said it, but do the live versions of any PT songs. You have the right idea- Start with Anesthetized Live and then Arriving Somewhere But Not Here Live. Don’t worry about the lyrics, you can look them up later. After that, we will guide you.
Way out of Here by PT is also amazing!
"Arriving somewhere but not here" will take you on a journey similar to a TOOL or FLOYD song. You can thank me later!!
I am determined to get this lovely couple into the Funk. I am a drummer, keyboardist writer. I grew up with much of what you react to. "Thank You(falletme me be mice elf agin)" is when bassist Larry Graham, invented the slap bass. The funkiest song ever written! . Sadly music was segregated. Most on your channel won"t be famiiliar but will become converts. It will bring in a new audience and the stars will be alligned. You will " Thank me later(no pun intended).😅
Hopefully one day I'll see NicknLex have their minds blown away by watching Stevie Ray Vaughan perform Jimmy Hendrix's VOO DOO CHILD behind his back live in Nashville. Or when they watch Stevie and the Great Johnny Copeland perform TIN PAN ALLEY.
If you are looking for a couple of harder rocking songs I would suggest a couple off of their Deadwing album Shallow, and Halo. The other epic from the same album is Arriving Somewhere but not here.
Abrazo desde Argentina
The four per-cent gayness in me is truly in love with Nick. The other ninety-six per-cent is drooling over La Mejicana, some, but mostly over my keyboard, sadly. You make a nice pair and I enjoy your content immensely. I sometimes feel like the kid I was, way back then; when watching most of yer videos. It's so enjoyable to see people half my age get exited from music that's sometimes half-a-century old. Thanks is but a small word and "thank you" doesn't cover the feelings I experience through your videos. But that's all I have to offer right now, my thanks.
Thank you so much for your support!! It was great seeing you there last night, too!! We had a laugh over the gayness; you may have to fight over him because you’re not the first to say they have a “healthy man crush” on him 😂
Gracias por todo Grüße nach Finland!!!
Mariusz Duda and Steven Wilson - The Old Peace
From that album, I recommend listening to Shesmovedon and Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled in immediate succession (one after the other, in that order). You'll be glad you did.
Your choices are as you say random ??? But it's super cool not to do the norm or what everyone else is doing , to hear some hidden gems or Rarely played Material , before the obvious stuff - keep up the good work. Please check out - Level 42 'A kinder Eye' (Alan Holdsworth) Guitar & solo , its beautiful.
When it comes to bands I know and Lex doesn't I tend to lean more the rare way. I don't like to show her what everyone else is doing. With bands like Porcupine Tree, Yes, IQ, Marillion we do requests or random songs. Like why show her Master of puppets if I can play her Trapped under Ice. Thanks for the suggestions.
@@NicknLex some reactors do the top songs straight away & then they dont visit them Again...your way is better, keeping it varied - Thankyou for The reactions, keep up the good Work.
Try an underrated shredder, the band is Savatage, some songs: Follow me, Edge of thorns, 24 hours ago, The price you pay
Hola, otro excelente grupo para reaccionar es "Tommy James and the Shondells", al más puro rock sicodelico, les aseguro que van a alucinar.
1. Crimson and clover.
2. Crystal blue persuasion.
Me agradan sus reacciones y me acabo de suscribir a su canal.
Gracias.
Gracias por tu apoyo! Jamás había escuchado de ellos, tendré que preguntarle a Nick si él los conoce. Suena muy bien! :) Saludos, Lex
Try the title track off Deadwing .... you’ll love it...
Also ...you need more Opeth ....‘Harlequin Forest’
Por favor reaccionen a the warning "dust to dust " live in Lunario CDMX
Would make my Friday night if you guys react to Rush-the necromancer
Great album but the 2 standout tracks on here Russian on Ice and Shesmovedon. And for some real querkiness try Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth.
Steven Wilson, Mikael Akerfeldt and Mariusz Duda are true geniuses of modern prog rock/metal.
There simply is not a bad PT song!
Some songs better than others ..
But, no bad songs here!
Not knowing what you know or not know Soundgarden is another band worth checking out. I haven't seen anyone else react to their song "4th of July" but it's a real "grinder" (as in through the meat grinder) of a song and if you choose to listen you'll know what I mean.
We’ve been meaning to do some Soundgarden; thanks for the suggestion! We know very little about them so that’s helpful! :) - Lex
:) - Lex
Yes i'm first because i'm a huge PT fan
Another wonderful progressive rock band you may not be familiar with is SOEN.
Please react to The Words. It's from their 2nd album Tellurian. They recently released their 5th album, and I haven't heard a bad song yet. Here's a link to the one I'm requesting.
czcams.com/video/y84R4GmTL7Q/video.html
Thank you.
Don’t miss “Russia on Ice -Porcupine Tree”
Hello, Could you please react to "Still you turn me on", of Emerson Lake and Palmer? ¡ Está genial!, igual la de" Lucky man"
Mil gracias por tu sugerencia, definitivamente tenemos pensado la reacción a ambas! :) - Lex
That bassline wow! Also pls anustheties 🤭!
definitely studio version of ‘anethetize’ rather than the live version...live just isn’t as good and doesn’t include Alex’s solo
Why do I watch a headbanging couple?
