Carol Burnett Show - The Family - Password Elephant Story 1&2

- Full episode of The Family featuring both versions of the infamous Elephant Story. The episode featuring the Elephant Story #1 originally aired on Nov. 7, 1977. Elephant Story #2 was filmed during the 2nd filming of the episode. They always filmed twice, took the best of both, edited it together that is what is aired on TV. Because of Vicky's curse word and because they found the footage unusable due to time, they decided not to air the 2nd version but thought it too valuable to be wasted. So they sold it to Dick Clark who featured it on an episode of "TV's Bloopers and Practival Jokes" a new, popular TV show at the time which would eventually turn into a lucrative powerhouse through syndication and from the many VHS/DVD releases in which the Elephant Story was featured. Vicky is quoted as saying that the decision to sell it to Dick Clark ended up putting her children through college from the royalties she would eventuallly receive.

Always wanted to extend kudos to Vicki for staying in character all the way! Perfect!
Tim being a comedy legend and Vickie one upping him was a once in a lifetime achievement. Carol and Dick made it that much better.
I wonder if they knew back in the 70s that this episode would make someone's night in 2023. Because Mama put the icing on the cake with that line and that voice .
Id be willing to bet they had no idea it would make someones night in 2023 , Nah, No chance. maybe 6 months later but not 40+ years later .
The best part is that Vikki did that to nail Conway. The whole elephant story was just Tim going off script to crack everyone up and in between takes Vikki decided to try to get him in the second take and that's what she came up with.
So great, again in 2024!!!!!!
@@pdoylemiYou all say that in a mean tone. We can't have anything nice on entertainment smh
Nothing would've worked without Tim. Settle down and stop using other people's stuff to flatter yourself.
This is the type of comedy that I love and is missing today..you couldn't help, but laugh and it still just as funny today...
Tim Conway is perfection. His timing ... when everyone seems to be just about recovered enough to speak, he adds the next little bit of info.
Fnorkin gets me every single time! 😅
This is the most hilarious skit ever!
Everyone in this skit is a comedy legend, but Tim Conway is on another level of comic genius.
Dick Van Dyke was never that good.
He was on an episode or two of the show Coach, he was amazing.
@@dwpalme2670I think he’s great!
@@marymckay9426Not on Tim's level. Tim was making me laugh up until the 90s on "Married with Children" and "Mad About You". Timeless comedian.
Forty-five years later, and it still stands the test of time. Comedic genius right there.
2023 and the Elephant Story never gets old!!! Vicki Lawrence shuts it down!!! 😂😂😂😅
Carol, Vicky, Harvey and Tim ... how I love their chemistry. Even though it’s Dick van Dyke here 😂
I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show and I'm 52. This is the type of family entertainment I miss.
46 and loved watching reruns with family.
@Alina McPherson Carol, Vikki, Tim, Harvey ftw
I was a little kid in the 70's. So I got to see some of these shows. You are 1000% right. Shows like this are long gone and that's SAD. Carol was and is a COMEDIC GENIUS. She had a incredible cast. Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman, as well as so many amazing guests. Like this skit. Dick Van Dyke. Just epic actors. Top of their craft and just awesome. If and when they did break the 4th wall I was loosing it with them. It was always fun. Carol Burnett was and IS ALWAYS THE BEST.
49 and I LOVED that show. My assistant at work and I, she has been there for 20 years since she was 19 and me for 21, still laugh when I call her Mrs. Wiggins with the Conway voice. So glad Amazon Prime has them now.
I turned 52 in Feb, and you are correct. This was one of the best in our earlier years.
I’ve totally lost count how many times I’ve watched the Elephant Story and shared it too. It has to be one of the best. Conway knew he had them from the get go.
One of the clue words was "ABSURD" - that's a perfect description of most of the Carol Burnett show - especially when Tim Conway was in it!! Wonderfully funny! The dentist skit is another of my favorites!
This is one of the funniest shows ever! Just brilliant acting and everything!
The fact that Vicky Lawrence broke character for a moment is amazing because she rarely ever did no matter what happened. That's the genius of Tim Conway. 🥰🤗😂
Vickie was warned ahead of time that Tim might go there with the elephants. They told her to 'Get him.' She did.
@@joehamlet7576 Her husband told her to “get him” because Tim had convinced the director into giving him more time to improvise and change the script at the last minute between rehearsals and air time and she was not happy about it. So she got him.
Not only did she get him, but the delivery and timing were absolutely lethal. I've seen a lot of cops of Tim Conway stifling a laugh as he got his castmates going...this is the one time I remember seeing him dtopped to the floor, laughing.

Wow I'm in my early fifties I certainly miss this kind of t.v. back when the whole family could sit down and belly laugh for an hour or two
You can see Tim is relishing every minute of this. Then Vicki K.O's everyone! Never gets old!!
Well, I wonder what his line was supposed to have been. Obvs, he said ``the dwarf elephant trainer put a tutu on the elephant,'' or something like that, and that wasn't the script, so everyone cracked up . . .
Nobody was better at deadpanning than Tim

One of the Best Comebacks of Comedy History of All Times. Vickie Lawrence got Tim Conway and Carol and Dick Van Dyke. She Won the Game.
I've seen the outtake so many times; it's nice to see what the whole skit was.
Yes it was great to see the entire skit!!
The outtakes are MUCH funnier than the actual skit!!
Me too, Mr. President! 😂
Love Outtakes..They're The Best..!!
That elephant story lays me out every time I see it. My sides hurt with laughter. Thanks I needed that. 😂
2021 and this is STILL one of the greatest comedy bits of all time!! Tim Conway is legend, RIP
The one where he is a Dentist IS LEGENDAY
Absolutely 🤗
In 2022 also.❤️
I remember when Tim Conway went off on a riff about the Siamese elephants..
I NEVER laughed harder in my life, stomach aching, couldn’t catch my breath and by the time he finished I was on the floor!
Every time I even think of him I see “THAT expression he was so famous for!
It’s my first go to when I need to laugh. Or anytime. My favorite of all time comedy skits. A classic! I miss that show and its cast.
One of the best shows on TV at the time, those were the days! Still as funny as it was then.
I'm impressed Carol lasted as long as she did before completely losing it.
Here is a great interview with Vicki Lawrence about the elephant story.
czcams.com/video/aA7bxTc0AJw/video.html
Now That's Comedy and Great TV , sure miss those days
NOTHING has come close to to this amazing comedic chemistry.
I love how he just sits there going on and on and not cracking up while the other three are dying.
Oddly, the youngest, most inexperienced cast member (Vicki Lawrence) did the least amount of breaking up, not only in this skit (although even she started smiling at least once), but throughout the run of the series. Carol tried so hard not to break character, but of course, she failed as well. Lyle had his crack-ups, too, but Harvey was the worst, especially around Tim! What a great ensemble. And yes, I miss this kind of good, mostly-clean comedy.
Tim Conway was a colossal part, of my childhood. Growing up with 'McHale's Navy', and 'The Carol Burnett Show'😁!!!
I love Elephants but I’ve never seen that! I would pay good money!
The man was made of stone!
Did you see the clip? He is cracking up too!
I am 57 and grew up watching Carol. In 2022 this skit is still ICONIC!! Really can't name a better quartet. Burnett. Lawrence. Korman. Conway!!!!! Unprecedented talent!!!!! LEGENDS!!!!!!!
This might be one of the funniest episodes in tv history
I was just a kid when The Carol Burnett Show was on. I watched it faithfully. I absolutely love this ahow
THIS IS FRIGGEN FANTASTIC!! THE FOUR OF THEM ARE SO AWESOME TOGETHER!❤❤😊😊😊😊😊
Grew up watching Carol Burnett. One of the greatest shows ever. My kids even like this show
Watched this a lifetime ago as a kid and it’s still the best thing ever! Oh what an ensemble of comedic geniuses!!
How could the Oscars not mention Tim Conway's passing? This man was a comedy genius!!
Well he's a TV actor mostly, not known for movies. Just saying...
@@deathbeforedecaf7755 yes he mostly did tv. But he also had his fair share of movies too. One that comes to mind is "The Apple Dumpling Gang." Very cute movie. He was long time film and tv veteran and should have been mentioned.

All comedic geniuses 😂😂😂😂😂
With one simple line, Vicki Lawrence "broke" the rest of the cast - and the audience. Classic!!!!

Just by calling Tim a little asshole

My favorite part is where Tim and Dick roll off the arms of the sofa together like it was choreographed. Beautiful!

This is comedy GOLD! One of The funniest bits EVER performed on tv! EPIC!

This show was brilliant. Cracked me up as a kid. I'm glad these episodes are available here.
Mama's Family ended up being one of the best spin-offs ever.
Agreed
The best
Yeah it was she was nicer on her show. Wish they would've kept her mean edge though!
I cannot even guess at how many times I have watched this story. It has always been a wonderful pick-me-up.
I've never seen Carol put her head into her hands as much as I did in this skit. I've got very little doubt the last part was 100% Classic Tim Conway improv. and the last part at the end with Vicki saying "Are you sure that little a$$hole is through". I have also never seen the entire cast crack up so hard. this show is the epitome of true comedic geniuses. no one will ever be like them.
I agree with you. This is REAL comedy.,
Conway told a different animal story during dress rehearsal. When the cast were in their dressing rooms waiting for the live show, the director knocked on Carol's door and told her that Tim had a different story in mind, and that the cast should be ready for it. Wisely, Carol did not stop him from going off script. TV history was made that night.
The director also told Vicki the situation and wished her “Good Luck” she said she never talked up in these skits so when she said what she did they weren’t expecting it at all. They couldn’t help but laugh!

Love it the first time Carol puts her head in her hand as if to say, Oh God here we go
The writing and acting was so good. A note to younger viewers, there really were tons of people like this in the past. Every family had relatives like this. They even dressed like this.
Wish they still made comedy shows like this.
Each of these people had comedic genius....Tim Conway was always killer...don't care how many times i watch this, its still hilarious....and its such a joy to see them openly enjoy each other...Mama put us all on the floor....!!
This is truly the best and funniest skit on Carol Burnett. Love Mamma 's Family.
Nothing can beat this skit. Nothing. The build up, the twists and then the bomb shell. This is comedy gold.
“I assume that somewhere in your life you saw a silly elephant but WHAT THE HELL MAKES YOU THINK THAT I HAVE?!?!?!” Lmao 😂

Her facial expression when she said that was priceless 😂😂😂😂😂
It was interesting hearing an interview with Vicki about that scene and how that was the first time she felt right about using an improv . Up till then she had never broken character. That was why she destroyed everyone. It was totally unexpected and took them all by surprise.
It was always Tim's mission to get the other cast members and this time she got him. The way he fell off the end of the couch in hysterics is the funniest part. And poor Dick, trying so hard not to pee his pants.

I thought the same thing. It’s like a scene out of Tennessee Williams.
And of course, Dick VanDyke would be here for this. Another legend, most underrated just like this cast and show.

My favorite skit. Watch it every night. Tim Conway was a master in his profession ❤
Even Vicky Lawrence had a hard time keeping a straight face! Between Tim Conway and Dick Van Dyke it's almost impossible. This is my favorite skit of all her shows though they're all hilarious!
One of the greatest shows of all time…. This episode & the Gone With The Wind episode leave me laughing so hard I’m just snorting 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Went with the Wind is brilliant. Eunice is always out-of-this-world crazy. Tim is incomparable here. Great bit from all angles
I was literally thinking of that scene as another classic too!
I saw both of these but the one that didn't air on The Carol Burnett Show was the funniest of the 2. Every time I see the second one I laugh until my stomach hurts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To this day I laugh out loud every time I watch this.
This was the first time I got to see the leading up to the "Elephant Story" It's an excellent and hilarious clip. I used to watch Carol Burnett every week on the night it came on. They don't make comedy shows like this anymore. In my opinion, you just can't beat the comedy genius of those actors and others of those times.
I was so sad when Harvey left to pursue his own TV show (which failed). It did disrupt the continuity and chemistry, which may also have led to the ultimate demise of the Carol Burnett Show after 11 seasons. Carol admitted in her book that they did not utilize Dick Van Dyke's full potential on the show, and he left before that year had ended. As a teenager, I thought that was a wise casting, but all these years later, I think she was right about not utilizing him enough.
I grew up with this show! Never missed it. LOVE IT!
Funniest scene in comic history. RIP Mr. Conway. Thank you Vicky Lawrence. It had to be said LOL.
No one will ever equal the comedic performance of Tim Conway!
I have a dear friend who was the rehearsal pianist on Carol’s show. He happened to be in the control booth the night this show was taped and laughed so hard during Conway’s classic elephant story he almost didn’t survive.
great story - thank you!
I think that over the years Conway deliberately tried to get them to break character and laugh, all while he remained in character. This time Lawrence beat him.
Wow. You think?

I loved it when Harvey Korman could not keep a straight face..because of the "ridiculous" antics that Tim Conway would unexpectedly pull during their skits together..like The Dentist or the Old Man skits. Too funny!!
I was feeling so sad tonight and this made me laugh.
Thank you...miss these people!
And all of them, Tim included. One of the few times I actually saw Tim grin or fight to keep his composure.
Tim Conway was best at cracking up his costars.
Vicki Lawrence talks about how Carol pulled them to the side and demanded they stick together and not break character since they all knew how Tim was. I think this is from the evening show and Carol was warned that the elephant story had changed. Below is the link.

Comedy geniuses. Conway always had a surprise...this time Vickki had one loaded and pulled the trigger.
Phenomenal.
it wasn't in the script, Conway always had some trick up his sleeve, Vikki decided to throw something back at him.
I had to Google What was Vicki’s killer line . I never understood what she said and thought she said something about the elephants making some noise through their little assholes when they would blow their trunks since they were joined at their trunks. Now I know she said “You sure that little asshole's through?” referring to Tim .
꧁ Orlando Cruz ꧂ Thank you for researching that because I couldn’t understand her entire line either. That is so hilarious!
@@Orlanzepol123 Orlando thanks for clarifying that. I also couldn't make out just what she said. I thought she was talking about the elephants' assholes. But knowing now she was directing that at Tim was way more funny than any elephant's asshole...OMG 😀😆😂🤣🤣🤣 Thanks!

Back in the early 2000s I worked at Beverly Hills Luggage.. Tim Conway was my customer who came in once in a while with his wife.. I'll never forget the first time I met him. He was cracking jokes and his wife, playing the straight man of the comedy team, stops me and says "He thinks he's funny"!! He was a really nice guy and one time when he was in just before Christmas, I heard this gravelly voice to my left while TIm was on my right looking through some things.. I turned and it was Suzanne Pleshette!! Even though the owners at the time were some of the worst people on earth, that place was like working at The Lucy Show sometimes. A lot of older celebrities came in regularly. I'm glad I got to meet Mr. Conway..
Wow how awesome is that you got to meet him. Did you get an autograph or anything?? But that’s really cool you got to meet him.
Well.. He and his wife came to do a little shopping so it really didn't cross my mind that way.. I felt that some of the celebrities that were my customers really needed a break and some help, not just another autograph seeker. It was nice to meet him though.. I also got to talk to Isabel Sanford, Weezee, from The Jeffersons once on the phone. She was looking for some luggage that happened to be discontinued. When I was taking her name and number I almost said "Okay SIR can you spell your name" because her voice was so deep that I thought it was a man!! Fortunately I just asked the spelling of her name and almost fell on the floor realizing the Bullet that I dodged when she said Isabel Sanford!! Lol!!.. Have a great week!

On top of Tim Conway's brilliant delivery and wit, what really elevates the whole scene are the moments between 18:14 to 19:04. Suddenly, the mood changes, when Eunice realizes that her only two choices are to either be stuck with her overbearing mother and an idiot, or this mooching, boozing, sycophant, and decides she'd rather be with him. "Well at least it's something momma. At least it's something." In those 50 seconds, The sad, desperate look in Carole's eyes, where we see her hopeless resignation, was as full of pathos, drama and emotion as anything uttered by Blanche DuBois in' "A Streetcar Named Desire". Carole, you break my heart in that moment. BRAVO!
Yeah, there were several moments in that skit where Carole displayed some great acting chops. All of them were great actors.
Yeah, that was always underlying in the Eunice skits.
