On the night of December 20, 1849, a furious hurricane raged over the island of Momprachem.
Driven by a fierce wind, black clouds ran across the sky, like horses loose from their leash. A stormy tropical downpour brought down torrents of water on the island. The storm, which had not subsided for the third day, crashed huge waves onto its rocky shores with a cannon-like roar.
This wild island, located several hundred miles off the western shores of Borneo, was known as a hideout for fearsome pirates and was notorious among sailors.
Only on the eastern tip of the island, on a rocky cape protruding far into the sea, did two points flicker in the darkness - two brightly lit windows.
There, in a house that stood alone among the dilapidated fortifications, a man sitting at the table was awake alone at that dead hour of the night. He was a man of about thirty, orientally dark, with an energetic and courageous face, filled with some kind of stern beauty. His jet-black, slightly curly hair fell in long strands over his shoulders, a short-trimmed beard framed slightly sunken cheeks, and steep, bold eyebrows, like two arches, supported his high forehead.
He sat at a table laden with bottles and crystal decanters, and held a glass of wine in his hand, but did not drink, but sat in detached thoughtfulness, as if his thoughts were far away.
