Just the video I needed. My quilt shop does a service project every summer where they collect quilts to take to Alaska to donate to mostly homeless men. I decided to turn my donations into quillows to make them easier to move around. They are already heavy enough as it is.
@@rsislandcrafts OH my gosh had a horrible time getting it turned inside out into the pocket. Next one I'm going to make the pocket wider. That's a lot of fabric to put into that pocket, might make it a little less of a fight.
@@stevemcmillin2737 You might catch It in my video. I had the same problem. It was like a wrestling match. I mention towards the end about making my next pocket larger and I believe I give some examples for possible changes. I watch lots of videos and read several patterns and blog posts before making videos like this. I went by their pocket math. Maybe my batting was thicker or maybe everyone else just forgot to mention that their pockets were tight too 🤣.
That’s a really good idea. I could have edited all that out but I thought someone might need a good laugh. Plus, it’s good to know we’re not the one key one struggling with what others make look easy. 😉
Oh my goodness Robin. I was watching and was thinking about how many quilt layers there are. Then I noticed Shrek saying "Ogres have Layers" LOL! Good work!
My best friend is quite the quilter. She gave my kids quillows for Christmas one year and they both still treasure them. They love them on road trips. My daughter is now 39 and my son is 42 and I bet they received them when they were 12 and 15!
I have made several of these. Great for in the car to keep warm or use as pillow on lap for reading or gaming. At beach or picnic is also good. Washable and practical. My kids liked to put feet in pocket when using as a lap quilt. Your folding struggles made me laugh. The more you do it the easier it is. I made my pocket rounded up to the next whole inch or more to make it easier and folding it before turning pocket right side out. Some kids just stuff it inside. Whatever works. Nice idea for jellyroll or scrap quilt. Good tips on attaching pillow pocket. I put binding over bottom pocket and machine stitched it into binding.
Love your tutorial, Years ago I maid one for my youngest son, he love it and keep it for years. But eventually come to in and. When to Joann's fabric but they don't have it any more. So I crochet one. Thank you very much.😍👋👋👋
A crocheted version would be great too. I like that It can be folded up and used as a decorative pillow on a bed. Perfect for those with little storage and lots of quilts.
Thanks for the tutorial! Back when my husband was a truck driver, my sister-in-law and I both made him quillows. It allowed him extra covers or pillows as needed. But we just used solid fabrics and quilted down them in 2 places for folding.
I’ve seen several versions that used fleece where they stitched the folding lines. I think your version was perfect for what your husband needed. Nothing fancy. Truckers are another group that quillows are perfect for. Van and RV living is very popular now and a quillow would be great for them too.
Robin, thank you so much for this timely video! I am making a scrap lap quilt for my sister and I had an extra scrap block left over. Now I will use that block as the center of the pocket and have the other side match the backing. I will also follow the tips to round up the size of the pocket. My sister will love it! Also, the backing has koalas 🐨 and koalas have pockets. 🤣❤
I use to make quillows using a coordinating pillow panel or a coordinating block. Most of mine are over 30 years old and are wearing out. I have been thinking about making some more. You have encouraged me.
I love you you are so real and show that not everything is not easy. My Mommy in-law made one for my 31 year old daughter when she was about 6. She still uses it and says it warms her feet! It made me giggle when you spoke about that. Thanks for your video!
The kiddos can either put their jammies or maybe their favourite bedtime stuffy in the pocket with the quilt when they go on sleepover dates to the grandparents or to their buddies. How cool would that be!
So nice you made the blanket, went and watched videos then came back and showed the versions. That’s just what I was trying to learn! Usually they whip through it and I’m still left wondering how they did this. Then I back up and back up and back up - thank you!
I have made quillows in the past, and I needed a refresher. Thank you for the video! I make my quillows with flannel on one side and corduroy on the other. I don’t think the recipients of the quillows ever made them into pillows; they DO use the pocket to keep their feet toasty!
This was really helpful. I’ve seen videos on it but I couldn’t wrap my head around how it will actually be turned around. I watched a video where not all the sides were stitched down but the pillow part was just stitched on in 4 places, leaving the edges „open“. So it is easier to grab trough and pull everything in. I hope I made that clear, English is not my first language. I’m working on the pillow part right now and can’t wait to see if it will be big enough for my minky backed quilt 🙈
Thank you for showing the various methods of fold and tuck! I had seen some quillows with the opening at the bottom edge if the quilt rather than opening toward the top as in your video. I was trying to figure out which configuration would be the easiest for the giftee to manage. The bottom opening requires the entire thickness of the quilt to be turned like your first example. The foot warmer feature is also a plus!
You’re welcome. I think the foot warmer is the most popular feature. Even if the recipient never folds the quilt into a pillow they’ll always have a spot to warm their feet.
The reason why I would like to avoid the feet in the pocket is why I am thinking on making a pillow case for the quilt and making it in a way that it could be attached in there when needed. Possibly then I could not call it a Quillow but a Quilt-In-A Pillow……..
Many people make matching pillows when they make a quilt. That way they can store their folded quilt in the pillowcase and know which quilt is in that particular pillow case
1) you have to make the pocket bigger. It's a box, & the pocket has to include the sides. It's w/ 3+ (3-5") for the sides. 2) fold the quilt into 3rds then flip the pocket. Then fold the rest of the quilt into the pocket.
Hello Robin thank you so much for doing the Quillow, its was fantastic. I was wondering maybe by putting a Zipper in would help? Just a thought. God Bless
Do you label your quilts? Thanks for this tutorial, You answered my question, what should I make for the kids this year for Christmas. When I do things with my grandkids we always add Ta Da at the end!🤣🤣
What everybody else said - make it slightly bigger. Thanks for the laugh; I was struggling along with you! I may do this with my JRR quilt :) Edit: I just looked at CCSew - the child folded the quilt up small THEN flipped over the pocket - I think you flipped the pocket then tried to stuff/fold the quilt into the pocket :)
Love this tutorial. I had wondered if the pocket could be added after the quilt had been made. This is perfect. I do have one question. If the quilt is backed with minky, should I make the pocket slightly bigger? And if so, how much. Thanks again.
Did you want to know how to use a quillow? It’s basically a quilt. Use It to snuggle up on couch. Most kids like to put their feet in the pocket. Then when you aren’t using the quilt you can fold It up into a pillow. That way It takes up less space. Great for people with small places, kids’ rooms, and college dorm rooms.
You can try and see if you like It and if It works for you. It’s fun, I make the basic tutorial and everyone comes up with new ideas to improve It or just make It their own.

okay-using your jelly roll quilt and turning it into a Quillow-->GENUIS!!!
Perfect use of the jelly roll race quilts we’ve made. I’m picturing several linen closets with stacks of quillows waiting to be given away as gifts.
If you do a combination of the first and second version would be the easiest option. Rewatching your videos again 😅
Maybe make the pocket a half an inch bigger? Sorry but I couldn't help but laugh. You made my day.😂😂😍😍
That’s a really good idea. I could have edited all that out but I thought someone might need a good laugh. Plus, it’s good to know we’re not the one key one struggling with what others make look easy. 😉
Great idea!

🤣. I hadn’t even noticed that. How perfect.

Wow. That’s awesome.
I fold them the way you did FIRST. WORKS GREAT…AND EASIER TO OPEN
Good to know! Thanks!
When I was taught to make a quillo was to make it 1/2" to 1" larger then your 1/3 quilt measurement to accommodate the stitching.
I made mine 1” larger but I think an extra inch or two would make It easier to fold and stuff. I guess It also depends on how thick your quilt is.
The struggle is real?🤣
Turned out great! Neat tutorial! Thank you

Thank you for the tips. If the recipient struggles with folding It into the pocket at least they’ll still have a very useable quilt.
Like the binding idea, seems like that would work well.
I don’t think a small child will be able to fold that but its beautiful. I love your choice of fabric! Your quilt is BEAUTIFUL!
I think I needed to make a larger pocket. Or fold It better. I watched videos of younger children folding It up. It’s just me that struggles 🤣
Love your tutorial, Years ago I maid one for my youngest son, he love it and keep it for years. But eventually come to in and. When to Joann's fabric but they don't have it any more. So I crochet one. Thank you very much.😍👋👋👋

Bahaaahaaa! 🤣😂😂🤣😂🤣😂. Great video!!!! I’m about wore out watching you wrestle this. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. By the way I love your novelty fabrics! 👍🏻
Thanks. It was a workout. I was swearing in my head the whole time 🤣
The pocket can be used to put your feet into while using the quilt!!!
Robin, thank you so much for this timely video! I am making a scrap lap quilt for my sister and I had an extra scrap block left over. Anna that sounds like an adorable quilt. I love koalas. I think using the extra block will be perfect for the pillow version.
Hi Robin! Thanks for this Quillow tutorial. Good job! (the folding) I love it!
Thanks Carol
I can't believe I missed this! 😸
I use to make quillows using a coordinating pillow panel or a coordinating block. Most of mine are over 30 years old and are wearing out. I have been thinking about making some more. You have encouraged me.
Great idea. There’s lots of fun pillow panels available but maybe we don’t want to make an actual pillow.
This is the first time I have heard of a quillow. Such a great idea! Thank you for sharing this. What a blessing!
I’m glad you enjoyed It. It’s a nice way to store quilts without shutting them away.
As usual, a great video! I love the idea of the quillow for my grandkids!!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Had fun watching you fold your quillow😂😂
Thank you. It was definitely funny. 🤣
I love you you are so real and show that not everything is not easy. My Mommy in-law made one for my 31 year old daughter when she was about 6. She still uses it and says it warms her feet! It made me giggle when you spoke about that. Thanks for your video!

Great idea. I’ve seen pillows with a pocket for Jamie’s, stuffies, or books. This way they also get a blanket.
👏👏👏great job no matter how it’s folded thank you so much👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you 🦩
Thank you so much for the great tutorial. You gave me some fun ideas.
Robin, you are so cute, and such a trooper. 😄
Thanks Leanne. When you come to my craft room you get the real deal. 😆
That’s a cute quilt love it 😍🌷🦩👍🏻

Rewatching after Ian, laughing because I have trouble even closing a Ziploc bag😂
🤣 I’m right there with you
So nice you made the blanket, went and watched videos then came back and showed the versions. That’s just what I was trying to learn!
Usually they whip through it and I’m still left wondering how they did this. Then I back up and back up and back up - thank you!
You are so welcome! That frustrates me too. Sometimes I yell at the video Zoom in! I can’t see what you’re doing. Go back!! 🤣🤣🤣

That sounds snuggly warm. Yes!!! Foot pockets.
I’m loving you! You’re a heck of an entertainer! I would make a pillow case and flip it inside! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much. 🦩
Great idea for your kids to take for a sleep over. Nice and easy to carry. :)
When I made one out of fish fabric for my nephew I put crummy 🐛 worms in the pocket. I asked him to reach into the pocket and feel around 🙂
Ewwwww 🤣🤣🤣
You are awesome!
Thank you. You’re pretty amazing too! 🦩
You did awesome!👍👍
Thank you for this this is a great addition to a picnic blanket I’m excited to try this.
Perfect for a picnic blanket. Then It can sit on the backseat of the car or wherever.
How cool....love the quilt, too!

💜
I have made 150 of theses only in fleece. I embroidered the school logo and the kids name on the pocket part. Sold them through the PTA
I’ve seen several tutorials where they used just fleece. I think that’s a perfect option. Plus the pillow version would be soft and squishy.
The reason why I would like to avoid the feet in the pocket is why I am thinking on making a pillow case for the quilt and making it in a way that it could be attached in there when needed. Possibly then I could not call it a Quillow but a Quilt-In-A Pillow……..

The Pocket is perfect to put your feet in when covered up!
That’s what I’ve heard. I know that’s what my family would do. If my feet are cold then I’m cold.
I put my hands in the pocket and grabbed the blanket to”peel” the pocket over the folded blanket 37:05
After you have done the flip a few times it gets easier. The pillow makes it easier to store and for transport.
That’s good to hear. Thanks
Love your helpful instructions. Just incase it may be wise/helpful to add one more inch all around for seam the allowances.
Thank you so much. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmm, looks like wrestling a small bear to me.
Haaaa haha lol
It felt like It. Or a Florida gator 😉
RsIslandCrafts - Robin Depends on where you live, huh? Coyotes would be more local here instead of bears or gators.
