Hermetic Sealing

One of the hermetic processes that Filtronic offer is seam sealing, this starts with a vac bake, which sees the products heated to a temp of 125C , and under vacuum conditions, removing all potential contaminants and moisture prior to the sealing process.
They are then placed into a nitrogen-filled atmosphere to prevent oxidation prior to being hermetically sealed. The units are then checked for hermicity. Prior to any testing a pre-process is performed. The units are placed in a vacuum chamber where all air is removed, then high-pressure helium is introduced, they soak in here for up to 8hrs which is necessary to be able to perform the next two tests
1. It is then put through a gross leak test using heated perfluorinated fluid, any leaks will show in a cascade of fine bubbles,
2. Fine leak test using a highly sensitive helium detector, the unit is subjected to high vacuum if Helium is detected a level is recorded.
