2-8-0’s to SD9’s On the NorthWestern Pacific in N Scale

  • Take a trip through time on the NorthWestern Pacific from the days of steam to the days of SD9’s in the Redwood Empire.
    See the leased locomotives of ‘parent road’ Southern Pacific taking up theirs duties on their subsidiary line that reached into the lumber groves of the northwestern counties of California.
    Presented is an idea where it just might be possible to, both model, as well as operate, different eras on the same layout… ‘expanding’ on those ‘transitional’ years where steam power would give way to diesel power.
    Hope you enjoy!

      Thank you for looking in! I sometimes wonder if I’m not too ‘overboard’ with the history part… but I can’t ‘help myself’. I do, very much, enjoy learning what I can about these railroads… and the NWP story is quite something! Once again, thanks for looking in!

    Fantastic video and narrative of the NWP. A beautiful N scale RR you have created. I really like your flat car lumber loads. Great job and thank you for sharing.

      Thanks again, Jeff! Very glad you keep ‘tuning in’! The history piece is added because I haven’t found better background sound. (Maybe me ‘rumbling’ on could ‘stand in’ for an engine’s idle? … nah I didn’t think so either)
      But I do very much appreciate you looking in (again!). So glad you enjoyed it

      Yes… it has been a while. But my production staff (my grandson) was out on strike… he wanted more money! Can you believe it??
      Again, thanks for your interest! I will hope to do another soon (- if I can ‘come to terms with my producer!)

    Hi John,
    Outstanding living history video with your marvelous Nscale roster on your gorgeous layout.
    I have seen 5308/1518 operating at the Illinois Railway Museum and now have a greater appreciation of it.
    Your detailed SP locos are exquisite!!!
    By the way, Did you make those beautiful lumber loads?
    Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season.
    Take care!
    Scott

      @johnpetrovitz935  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi Scot!
      I just remembered that you might have seen the 1518. Of course!
      (I always think of, and ‘relate’ you to the Little Joe’s!! But of course!… the 1518 is indeed there at the museum! Please forgive me!)
      By chance, do you know the ‘story’ of how it ended up there? I’d love to hear about it! Indeed, a great part of this CZcams thing is sharing with others our interests in the railroads. I only wish it were easier to ‘hook-up’ in person and share a day there at the museum with ya.
      Yes… I did do the lumber loads on the 40’ flats and several on the 50’ cars. It was a bit time consuming (and I ‘cheated a bit - just ‘layering’ dimensioned lumber onto pieces of balsa. I couldn’t imagine doing a complete load piece by piece!). I ran into some resin loads for the bulk ends, which look pretty good.
      Here’s wishing you a most Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season! I very much enjoy hearing from you and hope all is very well there!
      And… once again, thanks so much for looking in as well as sharing your great layout with all of us! It really is a masterpiece!

    Just to clarify, this is N-Scale? Only reason why I ask is one of your layout vids showed as HO. Also, who makes, or made, the cow and calf locomotives? I model this same region and love tracking down rolling stock and locomotives to buy.

    • @johnpetrovitz935
      @johnpetrovitz935  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hi Michael! Yes, this is N Scale. (I don’t know how it might have listed as HO… understanding those things is ‘above my pay grade’!) With my memory being ‘challenged’ these days, give me a moment to try and remember who made the TR6’s… ahhh, if I’m correct (and usually not), I think these ‘cow/calf’ were first offered by ConCor. However, I think the first SW model (same shell) was made for Atlas by RivaRossi back in the late 60’s-early 70’s… I think. Don’t know the history of how that model got to be offered by ConCor. But there were two different mechanisms. The first Atlas units did not have a very good running mechanism, but later, I believe Kato made the mechanism in the units that were later offered by ConCor. Sorry, I can’t remember more than that. One thing about the shell however: the cab’s roof was made ‘angular’ (similar to later EMD models such as was seen on GP35’s or 40’s) so I bashed new ‘curved’ roofs for the cab units.
      As of today, currently, I don’t think that particular model is made anymore. You can occasionally find the calf units (usually unpowered dummies) on eBay. I put a calf shell onto a powered chassis, so both of mine are powered. I’ve toyed with the idea of bashing a LifeLike SW into a calf unit but haven’t yet pursued that. (The LifeLike models are more realistic models, as they ‘sit’ lower than the old ConCors and have better detail.)
      I’m sure this is more than you wanted to hear… I apologize. But I hope this helps. And I wish you much luck in pursuing them!
      But I very much appreciate you looking in! And I am most interested to see pics of your endeavors!!
      Good luck… and have fun!!!

      @michaelbrandt2619 Před 6 měsíci

      John: Thanks for the quick and thoroughly detailed response! I guess I did not provide enough detail in my question to you. Yes, I do have a set made by Con Cor, bought in the early 2000's. What is great about them is I found them in Great Northern. The shop where I bought them told me there are two sets each with a different cab number, but she said the other set sold just before I bought mine. Unfortunately, mine do not run well, but may be a contact/wheels issue or needs a good fresh lube job. I also remember the sets made by Rivarossi and I believe they were made in the early 1970's as I did not get into this hobby and in Nscale until about just before then. I wanted them but I was a kid with just a paper route and locomotives were generally not in my budget, although I had a genuine appetite for Kadee/ MTL freight cars back then. Next time I get mine out of the box I will video them running. Unfortunately we are greatly spoiled by the way new Atlas/Kato/BLM locos run!@@johnpetrovitz935
