    I wonder too, about criticisms that can stunt one's creativity? I took painting lessons when I was 18 from a local artist. My mother would 'gently' critique my weekly progress. In my frustration, I challenged her to take lessons with me. She was 50 years old when she picked up a paint brush for the first time. A year later she sold one of her pieces for a staggering $6,000! Of course I was proud of her, but those little criticisms early on continued to betray my self confidence. That was 50 years ago! Not blaming her (she always thought it was a funny story on how she got her start!) but I've been saddled with the fear of failing ever since!! Good message Cassy! Thanks for sharing!

      I absolutely agree with you. Especially in very early, delicate stages of learning, it can absolutely change the way you see yourself, your skills, and the learning process. Shoot even now, critiques can be difficult to hear, no matter how seasoned of an artist. I'm sorry you have felt that way through your art journey! I hope that with time, and each day it gets easier for you to navigate. And knowing you're not alone in those feelings. (Side note, that is absolutely amazing about your Mum's art sale - that is not an easy feat! Wow!) Thank-you so much for sharing your feelings and commenting. I'm sure it will be helpful to those who see it. ♥ Cheers!

    This year, while I've probably produced some of my best work, I've fallen into the trap of social media and seeing these amazing pieces of work that have made me feel like I'm not good enough. That people are producing so much better caliber of art, that why even bother? But then I go back to why I even started doing art in the first place. It was because I enjoyed doing it, not because I wanted likes on every piece. I spent more time trying to find the right lighting, props, backdrops than I was on the actual process of creating the art. Even when I was drawing a piece it was "How can I make this look good?" - you know what, who cares if it looked good? As long as I was enjoying the journey, what did the final destination really matter?
    I'm glad you didn't give up, and I'm glad you've been candid about the experiences and trials you've gone through this year. I think sometimes we spend so much time seeing the polished, we forget the nitty and gritty actually exists, and are part of everyday life for everyone.

      Ploe, thank-you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. First, I want to say I'm sorry that you've been feeling the trap of social media - and hope that everyday moving forward gets easier to navigate! Although I hate that so many are feeling the same way, it is reassuring that we are all not alone in those feelings; and something we can hopefully break through together. Keep making wonderful things, and enjoying the process. ♥ YOU GOT THIS!

    Thank you Cassy for sharing. I havent been painting that long. I started to get very frustrated because I think o I can paint that then it does not turn out like that painting so I got a piece of paper and started to sketch out my emotions and it's TRUE I was going from one tutorial to another trying to learn all the techniques forgetting to use mine as well growing slowly. Instead of to fast. This is very helpful being honest with oneself THANK YOU

    OMG! I'm so glad I found this video. Everything you said is exactly how I'm feeling right now. I'm 72 and have been doing wildlife art since a very young age. I had a website for more than 20 years. Earlier this year, I shut everything down. I stopped painting, stopped posting on social media. Since then I've been depressed. Art to me was as important as breathing, but it was becoming a financial drain and I wasn't able to sell anything. Art was no longer about painting. It was about being a marketer, a cinematographer, a blog writer. It was sucking the fun out of everything. Like you I started to lose my self worth. I still watch art videos, like yours and hate myself for not having the courage to try again. What's the point of painting if no one will see it and I'm unable to make a bit of money from it. I truly don't know where to go from here.

    • @cassydraws
      @cassydraws  Před měsícem

      I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time, but I can completely understand where you are coming from. Times are tough, and financially a lot of folks just don't have the budget to purchase artwork, or even prints in today's economy. It makes things incredibly difficult for us artists, and yes - feels pointless if you can't share your work and have someone enjoy it. I wish I had better advice to give, or even the right answer. What I feel in my heart is create because you love it, and it is a part of you and your identity. I started to paint for myself, because it gives me purpose and provides a sense of peace and calm that I am unable to find anywhere else. I would love to recommend the same to you, that regardless even if it is for your own studio or home, create beautiful things because you're blessed with a gift, skill, and talent. ♥ Keep your head up, and I *hope* happy painting sometime soon. I've always got an ear willing to listen, and an eye to look at your beautiful creations.

    beautiful painting, l agree with you the social media platforms are destroying creatives and across the spiritual community too, the platforms lost the heart and soul years ago, l remember facebook years ago when it was good and fun, a lot of the platforms are causing huge issues for small businesses, l am glad you are speaking about this, l am noticing a lot are changing their ways and stepping back from positing constantly and just positing when they truly feel it, and you are right keep true to ourselves and authentic, the right people will follow and support you then as well, l have just subscribed ☺

    It must have been a very difficult time. Thank you so much for sharing it. I think (agree) we need to be open and honest about our feelings, always, and that can be hard when we're also trying to sell ourselves on socials. It's part of why I'm keeping art as a hobby rather than a job for now, though that also means I barely have the time for art that I would like to have.

      Thank-you for your kindness, and commenting! Yes, it has been very difficult - but I am looking forward to starting a brand new chapter! Onwards and upwards from here, and with all of you it is refreshing - and exciting. & Most definitely. There is not enough time in the day to balance everything. Although we wish there was! Do you have plans on opening up an art business in the near future? If so, what kind of art? ♥

    I gave up on art a few years ago and that was a bad decision. I’m slowly coming back and it’s been a struggle because I’m rusty in things that used to be so easy for me. It’s a setback but that’s the price I paid. When I begin to get discouraged, I force myself to keep going forward and the feeling passes. You’re a wonderful artist, keep on going. Stay focused. It is a strange coincidence that just as I feel this artist's angst my most recent effort is a portrait of a tiger. I am retired. I do not need art as a payday. I don't know what I would do if I did. But the art I do has won me so many new friendships. Happy is the creator who makes a livelihood through what they actually would do anyway through the neurotic fidgeting of a knitter. Social media is a realm of chronic dissatisfaction rooted in absurd politics. You cannot serve two masters.

    I am so happy I found you! and so incredibly grateful. I immediately signed up to your patreon, ive been a more whimsical artist and am changing to wildlife after 15 years. Instagram is difficult, I think it can be a good thing as long as my focus is on the art, not the app, I get so disillusioned by other successful artists. I don't have the confidence they do. I constantly fall into the trap of freaking out about not creating enough content and then disappointment because I only got 20 views on something. Ive refocused and am only concerned with becoming the best wildlife artist I can. Yes! it's a rollercoaster of doubt, hope, depression even, I feel like these things are frowned on to talk about, but it's affecting artists all the time. Ive wanted to quit soooo many times!

    Hello Cassy, I know I haven’t commented in a while, but I wanted to let you know that I’ve been watching your channel for a super long time now and I still love every single video you post. Your art is incredible and every time I feel like I have an art block, I see your videos and it puts me in the mood to draw again. Art block is very hard because it does make you think “what am I doing wrong?” But, it happens to every artist, no matter how successful they are. We always have that mentality of “this is good, but I want it to be better” and it’s one of those things that I myself still don’t understand lol. I just want you to know that you inspire my art so much and I love realism, and it’s okay to have doubts. They will pass eventually and hopefully soon you’ll realize “hey, my art is so cool and I’m inspiring people to be creative!” Don’t give up on what you love, but also make sure your happy and not suffering. I still love watching your videos and hope to see more!

    Thank you Cassy, total respect and awe coming your way. Love this tiger. I virtually painted myself out during Covid then we moved house and until recently I just lost total interest in doing any more. (Happy New Year 2024 BTW). I had boxes of paintings I had been unable to sell and no room to store them so what was the point in doing more? Its only recently for no particular reason I have started again. I would like to move toward sketching and water colours instead of acrylics. I'll see how I go.
    As to your social media comments, as you say you were doing so much you didn't have time to enjoy or do your art...in reverse I guess all who followed you were spending their time watching you and also not having time to do anything for themselves. I have started to step away from CZcams (and don't do other social media anyway) although every now and then I will, like today, have a little peek. I really do appreciate it, and am honored to hear that my videos have been helpful in your journey! I will have to check and see if I recorded that process (hopefully I did!) and if so, I will definitely cover it. :)

    Why not take 4/8 hours out of the week and produce some abstract work. No expectations other than some private fun. Drawing wildlife can be tedious and not very creative to my mind. whatever you do, if it's fun, you are on the right track. Also, taking a break isn't a crime. You could share thoughts of your journey with your viewers just like you are doing now. All the best.

      I like this a lot. Thank-you for taking the time to comment/share. I really would love to create more work that is different - even if it revolves around wildlife still, I definitely should branch out into other mediums more. :) Thank-you so much for the advice and kindness! Cheers!

    have you ever tried drawing freehand, no grids or tracing

    • @cassydraws
      @cassydraws  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes! I typically will do my freehand drawings and sketches in my sketchbook as practice or research drawings - and then bring the finalized version onto canvas with the grid method! It's a lot of fun, but I prefer to paint these days. Hope this answers your question!

    I know ive commented on a couple of your videos today and i will tell you this "Take care of YOU" your videos today starting with tge realistic tiger eyes..has inspired me to pull my paint brushes back out literally not 5 mins ago. Ive had a block due to my own depression. I love watching tge CZcams videos. I will say i dont like patron. I already pay for a CZcams subscription so dont want to pay for another subscription. However i Would pay for a live step by step animal painting lesson either live on FB or here on CZcams from you.

      Thank-you for your kind words, and support for my channel/videos. It truly does mean a lot. I'm so glad to hear you have found that inspiration and are painting again. :) I also understand completely about Patreon, and subscriptions! I definitely have some larger/longer videos planned for 2024, that I am excited to share, here on CZcams for free! Cheers!
