  • This is a film from 1959 by Gosport Borough Council, showing old and new around the area. Unfortunately without a commentary to explain the film, it seemed a little disjointed, so I have re-edited it with a more watchable sequence, with some explanations on the way. Malcolm Dent

This is a lovely video, I live in Gosport and work in alverstoke and I can see the town had so much life back then.
Makes me want to be there then.
Thank you for a lovely video 😊

Lovely video of times gone by, before my time may I add but I still remember some of those same views as a child growing up in this town.
It’s a shame it has lost its innocence due to lack of respect and drink and drugs habits in a dead end town it is today :(
As I write this masses upon masses of people are queuing for 2hrs + for fuel in the area as stations are overwhelmed by demand for fuel due to mainly the media hyping up shortages. Anyway Nice video! 👍🏻

Thanks for putting this up. Much appreciated.
Most of it best watched with the sound down or off, I think, and a noticeable alverstocratic bias (did all the children pass the 11+ in Gosport?) but this is as much to do with the available film stock as your personal pov from the website, I'm sure. The amateurishly self congratulatory introduction reinforces that. It would have been nice to see something from the centre of the peninsula.
But it's good to be reminded how broken the actual town still was in the 1950s and 1960s, and particularly nice to see the ferry gardens in this run up to another imminent "redevelopment" by the Borough Council. What the Luftwaffe failed to destroy they, like the City Council across the harbour, have always tried to trash anyway.
    Floreat Fortona.
PS By the way, it's Camper & Nicholsons, not Micholsons in case you're googling this. Closed the yard in 2005 and outsourced to Scandinavia, it seems. After my time. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camper_and_Nicholsons#Camper_and_Nicholson

    Good old GOSPORT our haven.
Sparky and me grew up here and its awful to see how this place has been skrewed over by redevelopment and the shit GBC
who have no real scence of what Gosport means to us local patreots ,without doubt once the Gov have sold out the army then GBC will see Browndown to the highest bidder and that will be gone forever.
    It makes us bloody sick.czcams.com/video/b-2mYU0wnGE/video.html
I cant even finish my pie now !
They wont be happy until Gosport is just another urban bog hole like Southampton or Portsmouth.
