  • We check out Barry's one-off Moonraker Concept built by Ford for the 1979 Sydney Motor Show in the James Bond 007 Theme for the then-current Moonraker movie. We also take a look at XD and XE ESP Falcons, an XB Hardtop and ZC Fairlane
At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

Bought my first XD - '81 351 ex-police car - in 1985. Only had it for a couple of years as I was young and stupid and didn't look after it. Fast forward to July 2020 and I finally get my second - a 250 crossflow (soon to be a 351 Cleveland) that's been garaged for 20 years. Things will be different this time. I'll be taking care of this one. Thanks heaps for the XD and XE features Glenn.

Ford made more money from replacement door handles than the cars themselves I think. I broke the drivers one on an xb. I had an xf for 10 years and became quite an expert at changing those. Best time was 25 minutes.

If you'd changed the bushes in the hinges then the handles wouldn't have broken.
I've owned XD and two XF models.
I never had an issue with the XD because it was only six years old when I bought it but my first XF was considerably older and only had one back door with a handle.
I replaced the bushes in all the hinges and only fitted three handles and never had to replace them

I have an XD SPac barn door, delivery V8 panel Van, only two both in Artic blue were made as evaluation units. Ford Australia had the 4 speed & Ford NZ the T bar auto.
In Feb 1980 they sent them around the dealerships to gauge public opinion, then discontinued the project only offering a V8 in the Sundowner.
The one in Australia was dissolved and my one in NZ was sold to Armour guard so it survived, currently I'm performing a full restoration and this story/history needs to be told since it's the rarest Falcon panel Van ever built.

I owned an XE Falcon 3-3 four speed for about 5&half years. No aircon. No power steering. An awful and sluggish car around town, but great on the open road. Those were the days when V8 XD's, XE's and Fairlanes were still everywhere (you know......the ones that sounded like real V8's?), yet there I was in my 3-3 six........and as jealous as hell. I toyed with the idea of doing a V8 transplant, but just never got around to it, plus there was a lack of time and readily available funds.
An original ZK Fairlane with a 302 would be my dream car if my mortgage was out of
the way. I have a few other cars lying around as well..... taking up time, money and space.

I was doing my apprenticeship when these XD & XEs were new(started in early ‘76) Not to bag the memories because it was fun times but all I can remember is that they were problematic on a number of levels. I’d be very surprised if much worked on any of them now because way back then very little did, from switches to a/c systems to breaking plastic(oh the warping and breaking plastic!), overheating engines and leaking headlights. Not my favourite cars. Mind you Holdens output at the time was no better.

A lot of those ESP had the heavy cast Nascar prototype blocks in them. Ford cast them in Geelong for the yanks but they were prone to fracture with high dynamic revs.
Not much good for a Nascar punching 8000 all day.
They also ran the blocks out in some of the 351 Broncos as well.
    Regards Steve.
