- Cornelius Versa's 'He Used To Be Mine' was recorded LIVE at Furaha Sound Studios in Hollywood, California as an encore to the recording of his debut Live EP. The Song, Originally 'She Used to Be Mine' was written by Sara Bareilles for the Broadway musical, Waitress.
Inspired by the timeless allure of classic rock, the twangy embrace of country, soul-lifting Motown melodies, and the epic power ballads of the 90s. Versa’s ‘Live at Furaha Sound’ EP, named after the studio in which it was recorded, pays tribute to these musical influences. The set features five songs that shaped Cornelius as an artist and sets the stage for what’s to come in his career.

Sidenote I chose this for an audition because of this video and this is one of the hardest song you could ever imagine, the range it covers, the storytelling, it's written to make it sound like you're sad and stressed and chasing the edge of the broken note an incredible thrill!!! Such a brilliant rendition of this lovely song. One of the things I loved most about it was your choice to present it simply with just the upright piano sound and your fantastic voice…the slight twang accent in your tone…it just speaks to a life lived that the song needs too. What a time for country music! / and here I thought Orville Peck had the gay cowboy Elvis/ Roy Orbison angle all sewn up. I'm going to have to revisit that idea after hearing your BABY, YOU ALREADY WON. And I'll tell you why. I think he has a more melodramatic musical theater aspect to his voice whereas you seem to me to come by the drama in your voice more naturally. What was that "of a life that's inside him"? It doesn't make sense to me...
The original song/story is from the perspective of a woman being pregnant so she is literally referencing 'a life growing inside her' and all the dreams she was not able to achieve prior. For me and as I interpret into my POV...that "life" is really more that feeling of something inside you. Maybe you're reflecting on where you are and it's not really how you thought you would be. Your inner voice speaking out and reminding you to keep living and keep fighting. I guess kind of like an inner dialogue with yourself / soliloquy.
