Unfortunately
Life doesn’t come with a warning sign
There’s no instruction manual
Code of conduct
Or reference guide
Handed to you on arrival
No formal introduction
No rule book
Or list of dos and don’ts
Posted up in the waiting area
No toolbox talk
Or written statement of particulars
Or safety awareness program
Issued to you on your way in
There’s no fully experienced member of the team
To meet and greet you at the start
Who will be with you
Every step of the way
To take you through all stages of the program
And to answer all of your questions and concerns
Their only concern
Is that you don’t ask them too many questions
Knowing that they don’t have all the answers either
There’s no one available
Who is fully qualified enough
To take out and remove all of life’s guess work
You’ll be figuring it all out as you go along
There’s no one on hand
Who knows every one of the blind spots
And possible pitfalls
That you may encounter
Throughout the course of your training period
No one to hold your hand
Who knows their way confidently through all of the dark spaces
You will inevitably find yourself in
There will be no light at the end of the tunnel
Until of course, you know where you’re going
There’s no dummy run
No panic button
No emergency break glass
No search and rescue
No hazard lights
No seat belts
No breaks
No oxygen masks
No air bag
No fire drill
No crash test
No get-out clause
No do-over
No rerun
No rehearsal
No saving grace
And no knight in shining armour
You soon come to find
That all and any emergency helplines are busy
With no one really having the time to listen
You’re free however
To talk to yourself, of course
But that’s only if time permits
Self awareness
Self reflection
Self discovery
Self preservation
You come to discover
That there’s actually no one dedicated team
Manning the office
That you’re on your own
And no-one really knows who’s in charge
And that inevitably
You too will end up eventually having to work from home
And off of your own initiative, alone
In other words
You’ll have to learn to master your own mind
Those who don’t quickly find a way
To become their own boss
Eventually get lost
And there will be no pity party
Sent to find you
And rescue you from the inevitability of your internal wars
These are unique battles
Ones you’ll be forced to fight alone
And by yourself
Until the day you die
Or are reborn
There will be no peace offering
That’s something you’ll have find on your own
And give to yourself
There will be no relent
And no surrender
From all that life wants to give to you
Or to take away
And no special concessions
Or blessings
That in some way you didn’t earn
There’s only but one way to hand in your notice
To quit
Or to leave
This is the sworn contract
Between you and life
Already signed and sealed
By your ultimate and involuntary arrival
And therefore, can never be broken.
