  • #darbarfestival | Khayal exponent Manjiri Asnare-Kelkar sings the joyful Raag Dagori, a rare raga which appears to be a Bilawal ang interpretation of Deepak, Tansen’s legendary fire raga.

    Learn more about the music:
Born into a family of Maharashtra musicians, Manjri started learning vocal music aged six, first under MT Mhaiskar and later with MS Kanetkar of the Jaipur gharana. She excelled academically too, receiving a classical music scholarship at university. Her approach is methodical, as is typical for her Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and often imbued with rhythmic strength - perhaps influenced by her training in kathak dance, and by growing up around her tabla-playing father. Today she goes from strength to strength, exploring rare ragas alongside popular classics. Hear more of Manjiri here:

“It's important to surrender to what you're doing, and understand, reinvent yourself with the grammar; there's an entire world that one could explore in a raag and its different dimensions.” (Manjiri Asnare-Kelkar)
Daguri (or Dagori) is a rare raga drawing from Bilawal thaat [SRGmPDNS], featuring prominent use of Ni and characteristic slides between Ma and Re. Despite my best efforts, little specific information seems to be available on the raga, although it seems likely to be a Bilawal ang interpretation of Deepak - Tansen’s legendary fire raga, said to have had the power to spontaneously light lamps in Emperor Akbar’s court when played correctly.
The direct lineage is however unclear. Some consider Deepak to be a lost raga, and modern resurrections point in contrasting directions - some versions base themselves on Marwa [SrGMPDNS] rather than Bilawal. Daguri shares its name with one spelling of the ancient Daguri bani dhrupad tradition, considered by some to have been a forerunner of the modern Jaipur-Atrauli vocal gharana, although it is unclear whether this is coincidence or not. Darbar welcomes further information on the raga!

We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

I'm taking you up on your request for more info on this raag. There is a clip of Shruti Sadolikar, in which she performs this composition. In her introduction, she says that it was composed by Aladiya Khan sahib upon a request to sing something that nobody else has sung before. This being said, I think this raag is also known as Bihari.

This shouldn't be labelled 'Bilawal-Deepak'. Dagori is also known as Raga Deepaki (which is in Bilawal Thaat). There is also a Raga Deepak from the same Thaat, but it is a different raga. Dagori and Deepaki are one and the same, not Dagori and Deepak. Thanks so much for the video, love it!

My guru Pt Ratnakar Pai, (a disciple of Pt Mohanrao Palekar & Ustad Gullubhai Jasdanwala) used to sing this bandish in what was originally called "DEEPAKI", a raga incorporating the Patdeep ang.
How, when & why the name DAGORI came into circulation remains a mystery. Historians of Jaipur Gharana need to resolve it.

@@milindmalshe7771 I've heard some say that it's been called Dagori because it was a popular raag in the Dagarbani tradition of Dhrupad.

This Raga is very similar to the Raga Manjari Bihag sung by Ustad Aslam Khansahb Khushrang. He was one of the seniormost disciples of Gayan Samrat Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan Dilrang of the Atrauli(Jaipur) Agra and Khurja Gharanas.
